High Expectations: The Journey of a Ballplayer

Mac Seibert, IV is no stranger to high expectations. Mac IV plays for one of the most storied high school programs in the country at Tate High School, led by Head Coach Greg Blackmon. Tate High School is home to Major League Hall of Fame pitcher Don Sutton and All-Star infielders Jay Bell and Travis Fryman. Fryman, current Infield Coordinator with the Cleveland Indians, spent the off-season working with the team that also includes his son Mason. Mac IV is quick to credit Travis Fryman with his improvement as an infielder, stating “Coach Travis spent a great deal of time working with our team over the winter and really helped me improve."

Aside from the storied history of his high school program, perhaps the highest expectations come from within Mac's own home. His father, Mac Seibert, III, serves as the New York Mets Mid-West Crosschecker. When asked about his son, Mac said, "He has some God given ability (referring to Mac IV) and I would love to see him, as I do with all players, maximize this ability both on and off the field."

My first opportunity to see Mac IV or “Little Mac” as he became known to us was at the home field of the Wareham Gatemen of the Cape Cod League roughly seven years ago. Mac Seibert III was a consultant for Baseball Factory and at that time scouting for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. He was in the Cape to scout some of the top college prospects for the following year's draft and agreed to spend some time working with our group. Mac IV was along with his father for the day and actually participated in several of the drills with the infielders. Even as a youngster of only 11-years-old, he more than held his own with the high school players. During this brief glimpse I could not only tell how much he enjoyed the game, but also the level of dedication he brought to the field and his raw ability. Little did I know just how hard he would work and what an outstanding player he would become.

We were fortunate to see Mac IV again at the 2010 Team One South event and briefly in the Team One Futures Game that fall. He was a solid player by then, but in the time since has really elevated his game to another level. Although area scouts are well aware of him, Mac IV remains somewhat under the radar on the national scene. The Seibert family isn't a boastful group and it’s a testament to them that they prefer to let Mac IV's production and tools speak for themselves. There are no favors called in based on the last name. Mac IV has earned everything he has achieved and reinforced that there are no short cuts to being a great player.

This season Mac IV has helped lead Tate High School to a 22-5 record and a trip to the state playoffs. During the first two rounds of the district playoff last week, Mac IV lifted the Aggies with a 3R homerun in a 5-0 win over Washington and a 3-RBI double in the first inning to set the tone in an 11-1 pounding of Escambia. On the season, Seibert is hitting .316 with seven doubles, two home runs, 22 RBI’s and ten stolen bases. We'll see over the next few weeks if he can duplicate the State Championship that his father helped win for Tate in 1984.

After gaining the interest of numerous college programs, Mac IV ultimately committed to play at Meridian Community College in Meridian, Mississippi. When asked how he felt about Mac IV joining his program, Coach Chris Curry said, "He (Mac) is a guy we have followed for a while now and feel fortunate to have him join our program. He is a legitimate middle of the order type bat." With word continuing to spread on Mac IV’s ability, several four-year schools recently made the trip to Pensacola to scout the senior firsthand. Along with the Division I schools in the crowd there were also several Major League scouts. His solid right-handed bat with flashes of power, combined with soft hands, range and arm strength to defend at high levels, makes him an appealing young player.

Next month Mac IV should have quite a choice to make between professional baseball, a four-year school or Meridian CC. He can't go wrong with any of them and with his grounded upbringing, outstanding work ethic and pure baseball ability, there is no doubt he will be successful wherever he chooses to play. We are excited for the bright future in store for the young prospect and would like to congratulate Mac IV on Building His Way to Greatness!

Baseball Factory would like to congratulate former player and current Harvard sophomore Jake McGuiggan on being named the Ivy League Baseball Player of the Week! Jake was a key component of Harvard’s week that saw the Crimson defeat Boston College and split a series against Yale. The shortstop was on fire, going 11 for 24 (.458 avg.) with three doubles, four runs, and four RBI’s. He also showed his speed on the bases, swiping two bags during the course of the week.

Jake has been a part of the Baseball Factory Program since being discovered at an Under Armour Baseball Factory National Tryout in 2005. That same year Jake attended a Hitting Accelerated Training Weekend at Baseball Factory Headquarters. The following year Jake was selected for the Cape Cod Select Training & Competition. During the event in Cape Cod Jake received world class instruction while improving his skills. The next year Jake joined Baseball Factory’s Exclusive College Recruiting Program. He continued to work with Baseball Factory and improved his game throughout high school. From 2006 through 2008, Jake attended the Cape Cod Select Training & Competition, Omaha National World Series and Christmas Camp & Tournament multiple times with Baseball Factory.

Jake’s hard work, in combination with his outstanding performance throughout these events, led to a lot of interest from schools around the country. After a breakout 2008, Jake was invited to the 2009 Under Armour Pre-Season All-America Tournament in Tucson, Arizona. That spring Jake was finally ready to choose where he would play his college baseball. With Baseball Factory by his side, Jake selected Harvard University and as his most recent accomplishment shows, he is thriving in this environment.

Jake became the first Harvard player to win a weekly honor this season and was the first Harvard player to be named Player of the Week since April of 2010. Baseball Factory would like to once again congratulate Jake on this accomplishment and wish him the best of luck for a great rest of the season! Check out the video of Jake below from his 2009 Under Armour Pre-Season All-America Tournament.

Baseball Factory Alum Pollock Records First MLB Hit

Congrats to Baseball Factory alum A.J. Pollock on earning his first big league hit yesterday! A former player in the Baseball Factory Exclusive Program, A.J. worked closely with Baseball Factory’s recruiting staff as a standout athlete in high school. He attended numerous Baseball Factory events while enrolled in the program before utilizing a combination of hard work and talent, matched with expert advice from our college recruiting staff, to secure a spot on the Notre Dame roster. A.J. enjoyed a successful collegiate career at Notre Dame and following his junior year, the Arizona Diamondbacks drafted him in the 1st round (17th overall) of the 2009 MLB Draft.

A.J. made his MLB debut earlier this month against the Pirates, but yesterday will certainly rank as one of his top baseball experiences as he notched his first Major League hit. In the bottom of the eighth inning A.J. was called to pinch hit for Justin Upton. He connected on an offering from Phillies RHP Jose Contreras, lining a single into right field. Although the Phillies escaped the threat from the Diamondbacks in the inning, A.J. will surely note this as a memorable moment as he begins his big league career.

Check out the video below of A.J. as a high school standout! Baseball Factory would like to once again congratulate A.J. on getting the call to the big leagues and earning his first hit (Check out A.J.'s hit) of a promising young career.
Former Baseball Factory Player, Dan Otero, Gets the Call tothe Majors

With acontinued emphasis on bullpen depth for the 2012 season, the San Francisco Giants decided to call up RHP Dan Otero. The 27-year-old Baseball Factory alum had a tremendous spring, posting a 0.90 ERA through nine relief appearances including three saves. Otero also earned the Giants 2012 Harry S. Jordan Award, given to a player in their first big league camp whose performance best portrays the Giants organization and spirit. Some of the former players that have won the award include standouts like Tim Lincecum and Pedro Feliz.

It has been a long road to the majors for Otero, but his dedication and hard work have paid off as he makes the transition to the big leagues. Before any of his accolades at the collegiate and minor league level, Otero was just another high school athlete with hopes to play at the next level.Otero joined the Baseball Factory as a junior in high school and as a result of his hard work through the Exclusive College Recruiting Program, college programs began to take notice. In addition, Otero earned a selection to the Baseball Factory Pre-Season All-American event his senior year. After a strong high school career Otero elected to attend Duke University, where he joined the Blue Devils for three seasons. During his junior year he led the team in wins (5) and ERA (2.20), but decided to transfer closer to his hometown of Coral Gables, FL for his senior season. He joined the University of South Florida in the Big East Conference, and led the team in strikeouts (87) and innings pitched (122) for the 2007 season.

In the midst of his collegiate career, Otero reached out to Baseball Factory for advice and information on the MLB Draft process. In addition to guidance from the staff, his hard work and impressive collegiate numbers paid off and the San Francisco Giants selected him in the 21st round of the 2007 first-year player draft. After five seasons in the Giants minor league system, Otero accumulated a 10-8 record with a 1.98 ERA and 86 saves. He also received three All-Star nominations during his time playing in the minors. This year the Giants decided to add him to the 40-man roster and Otero made his first career appearance on April 7, throwing two innings in a Giants 5-4 loss.

Baseball Factory would like to congratulate Dan Otero on getting the call to the majors! We wish him the best of luck and continued success at the big league level! Check out Dan's first performance in the Bigs. Watch the video of Dan below from his high school days and one of his many filmings he did with Baseball Factory.

Former Baseball Factory Player, APU All-American, Gets the Call

Facing various injuries to start the 2012 season, the Tampa Bay Rays have decided to call up their reigning Minor League Player of the Year Stephen Vogt. The 27-year-old was hot during Spring Training, posting a .323 average in 31 at bats, but was sent to Triple-A Durham earlier this spring to work on his catching, the position which the Rays felt he had the best chance to make the big league club. Until B.J. Upton (lower back) and Sam Fuld (wrist surgery) can return, Vogt will likely play a super utility role for the Rays. His ability to play outfield, first base and catch, combined with his potent bat, make him the Rays obvious choice for promotion.

Vogt’s journey to the big leagues has included a standout college career and additional development through the minor leagues. But before he was a four-time All-American in college and Minor League Player of the Year, he was ahigh school player aspiring to compete at the next level. Vogt joined the Baseball Factory in 2002 as a junior in high school. Through hard work and dedication, Vogt developed his game at numerous player development events. His hard work paid off and he earned two Baseball Factory Pre-Season All-American selections. Throughout the recruiting process Vogt utilized Baseball Factory’s Exclusive College Recruiting Staff along with the Baseball Factory Premium Video Program, and it paid off in a big way. Vogt received interest from numerous programs before graduating from Central Valley Christian High School in 2003, including the University of Richmond and Coastal Carolina. But it was Jeff Ishii (former recruiting coordinator at Azusa Pacific University, currently area scout for St. Louis Cardinals) who took notice of Vogt and recruited him to play at APU. Vogt went on to be a four-time All-American and hit over .400 during his college career.

The Tampa Bay Rays drafted Stephen in the 12th round of the 2007 amateur draft. Last year, his fifth in the Rays minor league system, Vogt hit 17 home runs between Double-A and Triple- A and was invited to the Rays Spring Training at the start of the season. However, both Vogt and the Rays expected his start to the season to be at Triple-A, with an outside chance of making the big league club as a catcher. According to manager Joe Maddon, although this was not the exact path they saw for Vogt, his bat was one of the most impressive they saw during Spring Training and at the Triple-A level, and the circumstances warranted a call-up.

Baseball Factory would like to congratulate Stephen on getting the call to the show! We wish him the best of luck and continued success at the big league level. Check out the video below of a workout Stephen went through in 2003.

There has always been a myth surrounding Junior College baseball, in that it serves as a last resort for aspiring college players. This thought couldn't be further from the truth. Junior college baseball can serve as the perfect fit for some high school players. It all depends on each individual player's standing, both academically and athletically, and in many cases, a junior college will end up being an ideal fit for the player for his first two years of higher education.

A junior college might be an excellent place for a player to start if he needs to work on his academics. If a player is ineligible to play Division I, II, III or NAIA, a good junior college can serve as a stepping stone to help catapult the player's grades, so that he may be eligible for a different college program in the future. And while the player is working on improving his grades, he will have the opportunity to progress on the field as a member of the respective baseball program. Going to a junior college also helps a player to finish his prerequisites, so that he may decide on a major. Prerequisites are meant to give young students a chance to explore many different academic areas, so they will know what they want to concentrate on in their studies as they advance towards a degree. The junior college route may also be a good choice for players who, on an initial attempt, did not get accepted into a particular school of their choice. In other words, just because you are academically eligable does not mean that you will automatically be accepted to the particular school. It simply means that you can play baseball IF you are accepted. For example, you could have a 3.0 GPA and a 1050 on your SAT which would make you eligible to play baseball in college, but that wouldn't guarantee acceptance into an Ivy League school.

The junior college path may also prove to be ideal for a player if the player is not getting the attention that they want from four-year universities. If a player has aspirations to play Division I ball but is not being heavily recruited, then a junior college may help him develop his skills. A lot can happen in two years at a junior college. You can get bigger, stronger, and quicker, all of which may impress a DI coach who may not have recruited you initially. When players are not receiving the attention that they are hoping for, Junior College can be a very good route to take. A player also has a much better chance of improving if they are continually playing and working hard. Going to a four year university and sitting your first couple of years will not help your development as a baseball player. You certainly will get all the practice that you can, but it is the game type scenarios that define a player and help the player to truly mature.

Lastly, a player may choose to play at a junior college if they are interested in playing professionally. Players are eligible for the Major League Baseball draft out of high school. However, if a player attends a four-year university, they are not eligible for the draft again until after their junior year of college. If you attend a junior college, you are eligible for the draft after your first and second years. In other words, a player could conceivably be drafted three times before ever attending a four-year university, provided that the player doesn't sign any of the times that he has been drafted.

When all is considered, junior college is just another route to take to play college baseball and the option should never be overlooked. It may not initially seem like the best path for you as a player, but do not just dismiss this option without exploring it. Just as with NCAA baseball, there are divisions (I, II, II) within the junior college level and in fact, athletic scholarships are available at the Division I and II level of junior colleges. It is very important that all players investigate all opportunities available to them; there is no reason to limit yourself during this important part of your baseball career.

Things to remember when choosing a Junior College:

What division does the school play in?

 History of program?

 Number of games?

Percentage of players that move on to four-year schools?

 Academics?

 Housing?

 Scholarships?

 Facilities

Student-athletes can approach the college recruiting process in a number of ways based on their academic and athletic standing as well as their interests and goals. Baseball Factory's Exclusive Program can help players sort through the chaos and find the perfect path for them.
