FACTORY SCOUTING REPORT Phoenix, AZ B.A.T.S. Video Scouting Session & PUMA National Tournament Team Tryout

EVENT DATE: 6/16/2005

LOCATION: Grand Canyon University

The Phoenix area was home to our Exclusive Classic event in 2003 (at Grand Canyon University), and also to the first annual PUMA Pre Season All American Tournament in January 2005 (at Tempe Diablo Stadium). Our latest trip to the desert was for an event prior to the beginning of the USA Junior Olympic Tournament, which would begin June 18 in Peoria, AZ.

Beginning with this event, we decided to begin considering underclassmen for the Top 5 Prospects. We have simply seen too many talented young players this year, and now choose to recognize the most talented players we see – regardless of age.

Top 5 Prospects

The Top 5 Prospects were picked by Dan Mooney (Assistant Director of Scouting) based on their performance at the event. The ranking is based on their status as college prospects, and is relative to the entire group of players we saw on the day.

1. Brett Nicholas, 3B, 2007 – Phoenix, AZ (Pinnacle HS), 6-1, 210, L/R. The best left handed hitter we saw on the day, Nicholas let the ball travel into the hitting zone and put a very good stroke on it – barrel accuracy was well above average. He stayed inside the ball well and used his lower half, allowing him to have pop to the opposite field. In the infield he showed some athletic ability, actions were easy and his footwork was solid. He spun the ball well across the infield, left his hand well (83 mph) and had carry to the target.

2. Kyle Brule, RHP, 2007 – Chandler, AZ (Marcos de Niza HS), 6-3, 180, R/R. His frame allows you to project some size and strength onto it, especially since he just turned 16 years old. His fastball was 84-86 mph and he showed a tight downward breaking curveball with depth. His change-up had some sink and was thrown with good arm speed. He extends well out front with his quick arm, and featured a delivery with good sequence and direction. Also plays the OF, and showed strong average ability at the plate.

3. Sam Pavlisick, SS, 2006 – Phoenix, AZ (Central HS), 6-0, 190, R/R. A well built, athletic infielder with above average ability to hit. His hands were super quick through the zone, and he got good extension through contact. The ball had good life off his barrel, and he projects to hit for more power in future. His hands worked pretty well with the glove, and he showed a strong average arm (81 mph). He may outgrow SS, looks like he will get bigger and stronger and move to 3B. Ran 7.30 in the 60 yard dash.

4. Ryan Moser, OF, 2007 – Tucson, AZ (Sahuaro HS), 6-0, 175, S/R. Featured an athletic look to his body, and athletic ability. Ran 6.99 in the 60 yard dash and showed quick and loose actions in the outfield. Moved his feet well and took good routes to the ball. Arm strength (75 mph) was slightly above average. Showed a good stroke from the right side of the plate, stayed in the zone well and the ball left his bat with life. From the left side he showed quick hands but not as much feel for the barrel yet.

5. Mike Navarro, 2B, 2006 – Glendale, AZ (Ironwood HS), 5-5, 125, R/R. What he may lack in size he more than makes up for with ability, he just has the look of a “baseball player”. It doesn’t stop there, he has tools also. He ran 6.96 in the 60 yard dash, showed well above average defensive ability and a solid arm (78 mph). His defensive ability is highlighted with quickness and polish. At the plate he showed above average hitting ability, a line drive singles approach that used the whole field. He showed great balance and feel for the barrel, sets up as a bat handler type hitter.
