Dodgertown Select Training and Competition: Recap

Vero Beach, Florida: Over the past few years, historic Dodgertown has served as the host for numerous Baseball Factory events. This year will mark the final year as the storied spring training home of the Los Angeles Dodgers. In what will be one of the final events held at Dodgertown, players from across the country enjoyed a great weekend of baseball at the Dodgertown Select Training & Competition, November 7 – 10.

On day one of Dodgertown Select Training & Competition, players and parents arrived at the complex for introductions and welcome meetings. Activity picked up fast on Saturday, as players began the morning with a throwing program followed by position specific defensive instruction. Rotations through speed and agility training, batting cages, infield and outfield drills and situational instruction rounded out the morning activities. After lunch, players split into four teams and moved through two sessions of batting practice followed up by a hitting instruction seminar. For the remainder of the afternoon the four teams competed in seven-inning scrimmage games. Players and staff then broke for dinner before beginning the evening rotations. Teams travelled together for rotations through the weight room, batting cage, core room and agility room before completing their first day of training and competition.

During the morning hours on Sunday, players moved through similar instruction from the previous day beginning with a throwing program and position specific defense. Before breaking for lunch, players rotated through Rick Sofield’s legendary “situational field” instruction. The afternoon brought the “tour of the bases,” base-running segment followed by a seven-inning scrimmage game for all four teams. Parents who attended the event joined their sons after dinner to hear Rick Sofield give his life skills presentation.

Rick Sofield served as the field coordinator for the New York Yankees, Pittsburgh Pirates, Los Angeles Dodgers and Montreal Expos and is a former AAA Manager for the Colorado Rockies. Sofield also coached at the college level serving as the Head Coach for the University of Utah and the Assistant Coach at the University of South Carolina. Rick currently is the head coach at the University of South Carolina - Beaufort. Sofield is a former first round pick in the major league draft for the Minnesota Twins and boasts three years of big league playing experience. Rick serves as a Special Advisor to Baseball Operations at Baseball Factory and is a key motivational speaker at various Player Development events.

Evening rotations followed Sofield’s speech, with infielders and outfielders taking some time in the weight room and batting cages while pitchers and catchers met with Coaches Reggie Harris and Ronnie Nedset. Harris is a former first round pick by the Boston Red Sox in 1987. He made it to the big leagues by age 21 and spent six years with five teams at the Major League level. Nedset scouted for the Pittsburgh Pirates and served as a bullpen catcher at the big league level with the Milwaukee Brewers and Detroit Tigers.

Both coaches had some great insight to provide to our pitchers and catchers. Reggie and Ronnie spoke to the group about the mental side of pitching as well as the importance of the relationship between a pitcher and catcher. After fielding questions, the coaches dismissed the group to the batting cages for the remainder of the evening.

Great weather continued into Monday as players spent the morning throwing and moving through the position-specific defensive instruction stations. Dodgertown Select Training & Competition concluded with the players taking the field with their respective teams for a final six-inning scrimmage game. In the facility, we know as Dodgertown, beautiful weather treated the players who trained hard, competed to their best ability and enjoyed an overall great weekend of baseball. The Baseball Factory would like to thank the players for all their hard work over the weekend and we wish them the best as they continue to work towards reaching their goal of playing college baseball.

Ask Doug: Off-Season Training, Showcases and the World Series

Ask Doug

Doug Glanville is working with the Baseball Factory and Team One Baseball as a Special Consultant. He will be writing articles and looking for your questions and feedback. If you have a question for Doug, please email him at askdoug@baseballfactory.com

A few questions for Doug:

Q: Doug, how did you train during the off-season? Did you take time off or did you ever get burnt out? What suggestions do you have for high school players in order to stay sharp, improve and be prepared for the 2009 high school season?

A: The off-season was something I cherished over the years. The major league season was 162 games and if you include spring training, you are looking at 200 games. You need a break. So the first thing I did was relax! It is important to have down time and clear your head to regroup. As you asked in your question, you don't want to burn out and that happens when you don't give your mind and body a well-deserved rest.

I tried to mix it up every off-season. That was to make sure that I kept everything new and fresh. When I first came over by trade to the Phillies, I worked out with the strength and conditioning coach so that I would learn their system, but after a while I started trying new things or focusing on areas that I needed the most work in. I even was crazy enough to take dance lessons (before "Dancing with the Stars") because I thought it would be good practice for endurances and timing. It really helped!

I know the competition is getting more and more serious in high school and I didn't have a Baseball Factory to see where I stood with my peers, so I know that you have to stay sharp. Baseball Factory has a wonderful support team for training programs, so I would suggest talking to their staff on various workout programs. I guarantee those programs won't be that different than some of the things I did in Chicago Cubs spring training! So you are in good hands.

But don't forget about your studies! The off-season is a good time to get settled into the new school year so that you will be ready to rock in the Spring! And most importantly, enjoy yourself, enjoy your experience in high school and work hard!

Q: I have been through the Team One showcase and have been contacted by a couple colleges. I have been told by numerous people that I can play Division I ball and my question is: after DI ball or even before is a showcase really the only way to get professional scouts to pay attention to you as a high school senior?

A: When I was in high school it was a little different. It was before the internet and before major showcase events like Team One. I am sure there are other avenues to getting exposure, but the real question is "Am I taking advantage of all possible roads to getting noticed?" With a showcase event like Team One, you are only helping yourself by maximizing the time you spend with the best competition and finding out where you stand nationwide. Having talent will get you noticed, but working and competing with the best players and developers puts the exclamation point on it.

Here are a few of my previous Ask Doug responses that might also help answer your question:

Is Travel Ball the Only Way?

Cold Climate Visibility

Q: Being a former Phillies player, was it exciting for you to watch them win the World Series? There have been a lot of talented teams that didn’t win the World Series, so what do you think separates a talented team from a championship team?

A: I was thrilled to see the Phillies win the World Series! I played with a lot of the guys on the team and from the front office to the popcorn vendors, they had a big family. I have a lot of respect for their ownership group and how they managed to keep it a "family" business. One of their owners, David Montgomery, came to my wedding in 2005. Class act.

It is all about playing as a team. Every team in the major leagues is talented. They all can do amazing things on the baseball field, but what separates a talented team, from a championship team is their ability to work together. They put their ego in their back pocket and focus on playing fundamentally sound team baseball. It isn't about how many homeruns your team hits, it is about wins in the win column. I played with the Texas Rangers in 2003 and we had the most talented line-up I ever played in, but we got outscored every game.

"Play for the name on the front of your jersey, not the one on the back" was a good way to remember it!

If you have a question you would like to “Ask Doug,” please email askdoug@baseballfactory.com.

Doug Glanville attended and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in Systems Science and Engineering. Glanville was drafted 12th overall by the Chicago Cubs in the 1991 amateur draft. Glanville played nine seasons in the Majors, getting his break with the Cubs. He also spent six seasons with the Philadelphia Phillies and a portion of the 2003 season with the Texas Rangers. In 1999, Glanville batted .325 with 204 hits, 101 runs, six homeruns, 73 runs batted in and 34 stolen bases. He led the league in singles with 149 that year. Glanville joined the Baseball Factory as a Special Consultant at the end of 2007.

Woody Wingfield
Exclusive College Recruiting Assistant

Early Signing Period:
An in-depth look at this area of the recruiting process with Exclusive Staff member Woody Wingfield

Recently, I sat down with Exclusive Staff member Woody Wingfield, and asked him a few questions regarding the early signing period.

Q: What does a prospective student-athlete need to know about the early signing period?

A: In college baseball the “early” signing period refers to the college commitments made by players in mid-November, compared to the “traditional” signing period, which is customarily held in April. While this early period has grown increasingly more popular, it only accounts for 20% of high school seniors who aspire to play collegiate baseball. Typically, players who sign during this period are individuals who plan on attending either a top tier academic school or a top Division I baseball program. On the strength of their reputation alone, many of the elite Division I programs take as many players as possible during the early signing period. By completing all or most of the recruiting process in the fall, these coaches are able to focus on their spring season.

Q: What are the advantages and disadvantages of the early signing period?

A: A major advantage of the early signing period is the amount of scholarship money available, both athletic and academic. By signing during the November period players also enjoy a more favorable admissions process. In addition, committing to a school in the fall eliminates the chance that injury or a bad senior season could have an affect on the application process. Making a commitment during the early signing period reduces the stress for the player, giving them time to enjoy the remainder of their senior year. So, what are the disadvantages? One of the major disadvantages usually concerns the undecided player who may begin to feel pressure about signing early. This could lead to a rushed commitment with a school that ultimately might not be the best fit for them. With less time to assess and evaluate the players, the November signing period can feel rushed for coaches as well. Overall, the early signing period can leave out important aspects of the college recruiting process detrimental to both the coach and the player.

It is best to get as much advice and guidance as possible in order to make the right decision.

Q: What should a player do if they do not sign during the November signing period?

A: To start, players should not feel defeated if they do not sign during the early period. Many different factors need to fall into place for a commitment to be made in November and those who do not find themselves in this position should stay positive and focus on the advantages that exist in waiting for the traditional signing period. For example, standard applications are non-binding and therefore players can apply to multiple schools and then make a decision based on where they are accepted. Another advantage is the additional time available to look at schools, visit campuses and meet with coaches. This allows both the players and coaches to gather as much information as possible before making a decision. What’s more, players have more time to improve their game, gain strength and increase physical fitness in time for their senior season. Most importantly, players should not give up but look at what steps they need to take in order to fulfill their dreams of playing college baseball.

Woody Wingfield serves as the Exclusive College Recruiting Assistant, working with players and parents in the Exclusive Program. His role is to assist all families with questions they may have throughout the recruiting process. Woody is a graduate of the University of Virginia where he worked as an intern with the Cavalier Baseball Team.

Baseball Factory would like to recognize the 18 former Baseball Factory and Team One participants competing in the 2008 Major League Postseason.

Baseball Factory and Team One alumni are featured on seven of the eight teams in the postseason this year. From the National League wild-card Milwaukee Brewers, alumni include All-Stars C.C. Sabathia, J.J. Hardy, Ryan Braun, and Prince Fielder. On the National League Central Division Champion Chicago Cubs is former Baseball Factory and Team One participant Ryan Theriot. Despite their team’s recent elimination from the postseason, these players certainly made for an exciting National League division series. Baseball Factory and Team One alumni Pat Burrell and Brett Myers will be playing for the National League Championship with the Philadelphia Phillies in what promises to be a thrilling series between the Phillies and Los Angeles Dodgers.

In the American League, all four teams to enter the postseason featured former Baseball Factory and Team One standouts on their roster. John Danks, Gavin Floyd, A.J. Pierzynski, and Carlos Quinten (DL), four past Baseball Factory and Team One participants now members of the Chicago White Sox, were recently eliminated from postseason play at the hands of the Tampa Bay Rays. Advancing to the American League Championship Series for the first time in franchise history, the Ray’s are led by former Baseball Factory and Team One participants J.P. Howell, Rocco Baldelli, and B.J. Upton. Upton leads the Ray’s with three homeruns this postseason, including two solo shots in the clinching game of the divisional series. Facing the Ray’s in the ALCS will be the defending World Series champions, the Boston Red Sox, who defeated the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in the division series. The Angels roster featured three alumni from the Baseball Factory in Jeff Mathis, Mike Napoli, and Mark Teixeira. Their postseason came to an end after the Boston Red Sox’s Jed Lowrie, a previous Baseball Factory and Team One player, hit a game-winning single in the ninth inning of Game 4 to send the Red Sox back to the ALCS.

Good luck to the remaining Baseball Factory and Team One alumni as the League Championship Series begin!

Ask Doug

Doug Glanville is working with the Baseball Factory and Team One Baseball as a Special Consultant. He will be writing articles and looking for your questions and feedback. If you have a question for Doug, please email him at askdoug@baseballfactory.com

Q: Hello, I'm a proud father of two sons and a daughter. I'm really proud that they’re healthy and all love to play sports! My oldest son has really got his mind made up about playing in "The Bigs" as he would say. He has played in travel baseball for the last 2 years…. The money that this Big League Dream is costing me everything, I just can't do it anymore…. I had to do what's best for my family, [my son] is playing community ball next year for our home town, while deep down I know travel baseball is where he needs to be.

Is travel baseball the only way to be seen or showcase your child?

Thanks for your time,

Sam in Ohio

A: To be seen this day and age as a young athlete is quite different than when I came up the ranks as a high school player. For starters, in my day, it was much more difficult to get noticed. That had a lot to do with the age before the internet.

Today, players need to have a marketing sense to get the best and the most exposure possible. It is very competitive out there and the more you are noticed and seen, the safer a scout will feel about knowing what kind of player you are…

Another key value of working with an organization like Baseball Factory is that your son will get a sense of where he stands in relation to his peers. This was also something very difficult for me as a high school player in the 1980s. My baseball world was centered around New Jersey. It was rare that I saw what other players were doing across the country. I hardly remember a time where I played with or against anyone from out of state.

So for all I knew, I was good for New Jersey and terrible by California standards and I already knew that players from warm climates would play more baseball in my day and get more opportunities to get noticed.

These days, much of this has changed. The internet gives players a new forum and a marketing tool that reaches the entire planet. This knowledge allows developmental programming to measure where players stand on a national scale, not just a local scale and for the next level of play (college or pro) evaluators can have a better sense of a player’s long-term potential.

As a parent of one of these players, it makes it more important to expose your son to as many of their geographically diverse platforms as possible and do it in a way where the organization that heads up these programs have a national sense of how to evaluate talent. As I have worked with Baseball Factory, I feel we have the most comprehensive options by combining scouting insider intelligence (scout for Baseball America) with on-field expertise. These two things coupled with command of the internet’s tools make for a powerful support system for your son.

It is certainly possible to get noticed by being a local phenomenon, but to really give your son his best opportunity, do your best to find a program that gives him some on-field time with the rest of the world. As a baseball player, this will give him visibility and comfort to know that he can compete nationwide and as a young man who is growing in confidence, it will be good for his sense of possibility.

Dear Baseball Factory Friends:

Having benefitted from Coach Jim Spooner's advice and teaching on several occasions while I participated in Baseball Factory development programs, I was deeply saddened to learn of his recent death. None of us who admired him and learned from him as part of our Baseball Factory training had any idea he had leukemia because he was always so vigorous, energetic and genuinely enthusiastic. As a player who started with the Baseball Factory as a high school freshman and stayed for the full four years, I attribute my current position as a Division I college pitcher to the very special people at the Baseball Factory who went out of their way to help and guide me, with Coach Spooner as one of the important members of that group. I will remember him both as a gentleman and as a coach who cared about his players and the people he touched. His wife and family should know that there is a world of baseball players out here who will never forget him and will always be able to look skyward and whisper "Thank you Coach."

With warmest regards and sincere condolences,

Sean Darsee
Iona College Starting Pitcher

Ask Doug: Cold Climate Visibility

Ask Doug

Doug Glanville is working with the Baseball Factory and Team One Baseball as a Special Consultant. He will be writing articles and looking for your questions and feedback. If you have a question for Doug, please email him at askdoug@baseballfactory.com.

Q: Hi Doug, here's my question, being a baseball player from Chicago, scouts from the south, west coast, and east coast take one look at where we're from and cross our names off. Ball players such as Cliff Floyd, Kirby Puckett, Steve Carlton, and Paul Molitor were all from Illinois. I do understand that we do have winter here, we can't play baseball all-year around, and that the Midwest has a very small list of ball players, but why are colleges so quick to say that we are not good enough to make their team? Why do we all get labeled as bad ball players? I was just in Dodgertown and Pirate City [with Baseball Factory] and have played with and against ball players from Texas, Florida, Georgia, and California and have been as good, if not better than most of them. I also understand that what I faced wasn't Team One All-American level, but rather average varsity high school level, but I wonder if there was a scout there from the state of Florida, why would I be so unattractive to him? If I'm good enough, shouldn't they even glance at me or is this what a kid from Chicago should expect? In the end, what I'm really trying to ask is why do we get labeled? Thank you, Matt.

A: Matt,

Good to hear from you and you have asked an excellent question.

For starters, I can say that I understand your frustration. I grew up in Northern New Jersey and during a time when it was harder to get noticed. There weren’t the tools available to me to gain exposure like there are today. I had to rely on word of mouth or a scout that came to see someone else to notice me playing against him. But, I did know how playing in a cold climate can work against you.

I understand that in general, players in colder climates do not play as much baseball during the school year. We started tryouts on March 8th and we were lucky if there wasn’t snow on the ground. You just have some limitations that players in California and Florida do not have, but the mistake our evaluators can make is to assume that with the physical limitations, there are limitations in your commitment.

I remember before I was drafted by the Cubs. The knock on me was my “commitment.” I chose to go to an Ivy League college which played only 40 games a year (if we didn’t get snowed out). Part of the questions came from my commitment to school and finishing my education, but part of the challenge was what plagues all players in colder climates.

You have to understand that some of the issue is the freedom for a scout to stick his neck out there on a player’s behalf. It is a chain of power and it works its way up the top based on someone’s recommendation. It is a lot safer to go with someone who is playing year round and a large number of games during the regular season. You have more evidence, you see him at his high and at his low, there is just more opportunity to see you play, but your job as a cold-weather player is to prove that even if that is true, it has nothing to do with your heart. And heart matters… a lot.

At one point, after scouts continued to ask me about my “lack of commitment” to the game by going to an Ivy League school, I pointed out that if anything, I should get more credit because I didn’t play on scholarship, I had a very tough academic schedule that I had to balance, there were no fans in the stands, no beaches, no popularity, no free passes, and tough weather. So I played because I loved the game, because there were no perks. Imagine what I can do when I get a taste of top facilities and good weather. You have to make your argument and even better, make it on the field.

You have to see it as a challenge and take pride in being the underdog just as I was when I played in the Cape Cod Baseball League coming from an Ivy League school. I played with guys from USC, UCLA, UNC, all the top programs, but my college teammate and I walked away with the top pro prospect award and the top pitching award in the league. Two northern born, northern college players swept the awards. That was fun!

Just remember that it is better today than it has been, you have the internet and strong programs like Baseball Factory to give you exposure and this gives you many opportunities to shine and show what you can do. Use it is a source of pride and motivation, you have little of the benefits of a warm-weather player, yet you still can hold your own and play as well. In the end, when you are undeniable, scouts will come around and give you a shot, no matter where you are from…you just have to do a little more early on and that will help you be a better, more disciplined ballplayer anyway, so use it as a weapon.

(August 5, 2008) – Team One Baseball and the Arizona Junior Fall Classic have announced today that they will be joining forces to host the 2008 Team One Futures Showcase at the Peoria Sports Complex Stadium on Friday, October 24 at 6:30 PM PST. The event will take place during the Arizona Junior Fall Classic and will be operated by Team One Baseball.

The 2008 Team One Futures Showcase will showcase thirty-six of the nation’s best rising sophomores and juniors from across the country at the Peoria Sports Complex. A committee of Baseball Factory and Team One Baseball scouts will select the players.

“Team One is proud to team up with the prestigious Arizona Junior Fall Classic tournament hosted each year by Seattle Mariners international scout Ted Heid,” said Justin Roswell, Senior Director of Team One Baseball. “By holding the Team One Futures Showcase during the Arizona Junior Fall Classic in Peoria the goal is to provide more exposure opportunities for these underclass prospects.”

In 2007 55 teams participated in the Arizona Junior Fall Classic, representing over 20 states. In addition, over 50 different colleges and Major League organizations were represented at the Arizona Junior Fall Classic in 2007 and a similar turnout is expected for 2008. The mission of the Arizona Junior Fall Classic and the Team One Futures Showcase are identical, which is why the two events are teamed up in 2008. Both events bring the top underclass talent together on a national stage to compete in front of college coaches and professional scouts.

This is not the first underclass showcase held in the history of Team One Baseball. Team One Baseball last held a premier underclass showcase in 2005. At that time, the event was called the Team One National Underclass Game. Notable players from that event include Josh Vitters, 2007 No.3 Overall Pick, Chicago Cubs and Blake Beavan, 2007 No.17 Overall Pick, Texas Rangers. In addition, Christian Colon (Cal State Fullerton) and Kyle Blair (San Diego) were recently named to Baseball America’s 2008 Freshman All-American Team.
Based on their performance, players from the 2008 Team One Futures Showcase may be selected to compete in the 2009 Under Armour Pre-Season All-America Tournament or the 2009 Under Armour All America Game.
The 2008 Under Armour All-America Baseball game was recently played at the historic Wrigley Field on Sunday, August 17. Previously called the Cape Cod High School Classic, presented by Under Armour, this marked the first-year that Under Armour served as the game’s title sponsor. This was the first-ever high school All-America game to be played at Wrigley Field. The game was telecast live nationally on ESPNU.

About Team One Baseball & Baseball Factory
In 2004, Baseball Factory and Team One Baseball, the number one company for top-flight showcases, formed a partnership to optimize the services offered to student-athletes, college baseball coaches and professional scouts. Team One Baseball holds showcases at locations across the country where the best players from across the nation perform in front of college coaches and professional scouts. Since 1992, over 100 Team One players have been selected in the first round of the Major League. Notable Team One alumnus include AL Cy Young Winner Roy Halladay, All Star’s Prince Fielder, Josh Hamilton, Ryan Braun, Ian Kinsler, Brian Roberts, and many other big league stars and future prospects. Together, Baseball Factory and Team One have assisted players in obtaining over $500 million in scholarships and over 2,000 players from Baseball Factory and Team One have been selected in the amateur draft with over 175 of those players going on to play in the Major Leagues.

About the Arizona Junior Fall Classic
The Arizona Junior Fall Classic was first held in 1997. Since then, Ted Heid, an international scout for the Seattle Mariners, has grown the event such that in 2007 there were 55 teams representing over 20 states. In 2007, the event was scouted by over 50 college coaches and major league scouts. The 2008 Arizona Junior Fall Classic will take place from Friday, October 24 through Sunday, October 26.
