2012 Under Armour Pre-Season All-America Tournament Top 10: 2014 Grads

With over 325 players participating in the 2012 Under Armour Pre-Season All-America Tournament, powered by Baseball Factory, our scouts were treated to players from across the country that had many tools including sub seven second speed, sub two second pop time and above 89mph velocities. While we cannot honor everyone that attended we did want to highlight a few players that stood out.

The following are the Top 10 2014 Grads from the 2012 Under Armour Pre-Season All-America Tournament.

1. Dakota Robbins | C | Miami, FL | Westminister Christian School
Dakota is a special catching prospect who put on quite a display at this year’s event. He has a strong 6’0”, 200 lbs. frame and an outstanding set of tools to go with it. His left-handed bat is impressive! He has plus bat speed which results in outstanding raw power, especially to the pull-side. He drove a few balls out of the cavernous Kino Sports Complex fields in batting practice and was an impressive five for six at the plate with two triples and a walk in game competition. Behind the plate Dakota shows flexibility to go with soft, firm hands. He also throws well (1.96 low release time to 2B) and is advanced on balls in the dirt. Overall, this is a special middle-of-the-order left-handed bat, which combined with the ability to stay behind the plate makes Dakota one of the elite prospects in the entire 2014 class.

2. Stone Garrett | OF | Sugar Land, TX | George Ranch
Stone is a physical specimen despite being a 2014 grad. He has a strong, athletic 6’2” frame with room to add more muscle. At the plate, he generates serious bat speed with a quick, level stroke. For a young player, he has a mature approach showing discipline and using the whole field while being able to translate his skills to game success against quality pitching. He already flashes legitimate power to the pull side and that will just continue to improve. In the field, Stone glides to balls and shows his athleticism. He has the ability to play all three OF spots. Overall, this is a top prospect that will be watched closely by both college recruiters and professional scouts over the next few years.

3. Dylan White | 3B/RHP | Vancouver, WA | Camas
Dylan had an impressive weekend as a hitter, third baseman and pitcher. His athletic 6’4”, 205 lbs. frame immediately stands out. As a hitter, he uses his strength and leverage to generate bat speed and pull-side power (as evidenced by his homerun in batting practice out of one of the large fields at the Kino Sports Complex). In the field, he shows good lateral range, sound hands and plenty of arm strength across the diamond. Dylan even jumped on the mound and pounded the strike zone with a fastball that topped at 86. This talented young player has a chance to be one of the most sought-after 3B in his class.

4. Blake Wiggins | SS | Little Rock, AR | Pulaski Academy
Blake is a physical young infielder who can really swing the bat. He has an advanced, rhythmic approach with bat speed. He is a confident hitter who makes hard contact on a consistent basis and has the makings of a run producer at the next level. In the infield, he shows good actions and active feet though he will need to refine his work around the bag and glove work to remain at short at higher levels. Overall, this is an athlete and bat to watch closely.

5. David Peterson | LHP | Denver, CO | Regis Jesuit
David is a tall, lean LHP from Colorado with a very high ceiling. He has an outstanding pitcher’s body and a clean arm stroke. His delivery is in-line and under control and he has a naturally quick arm. His tailing fastball is in the low to mid 80s now with quite a bit more in the tank. His out pitch is a sharp-breaking slider with depth that is hard on both right-handed and left-handed hitters. As he develops a change, David will be a top pitching prospect.

6. Ricky Contreras | RHP/SS | Lubbock, TX | Lubbock Christian
Ricky is a RHP/SS with good polish to his game for such a young player. On the mound he sits comfortably in the 84-87 mph range with his fastball and complements that with a sharp breaking ball and a fading change. He throws all of them from a deceptive delivery. In the field, Ricky has soft, sure hands and a quick exchange. He uses his feet well to play through balls. At the plate he sprays line drives to all fields. Overall, Ricky should be an impact guy in the future.

7. Ray Hutchinson | RHP/SS | Holden, LA | Holden
Ray is a young two-way player with high level ability both as a pitcher and infielder. On the mound he has a live arm that allows him to deliver his running fastball up in the 87-88 mph range with regularity. He also flashed a breaking ball with bite and a change with fade. As a position player, Ray mixes in bat speed and strength at the plate with active feet defensively. As he refines his game, he will be a young player to keep an eye on.

8. Travis Quintanilla | RHP | Refugio, TX | Refugio
Travis is a young RHP with a clean, quick arm. He pitches in the mid 80s with his fastball topping at 86mph and maintaining his velocity through all three of his innings. His curve ball is sharp with depth and acts as a swing-and-miss pitch now and at future levels. In addition, he mixes in a developing change. Overall, this athletic RHP has a bright future on the mound.

9. Drew Doornenbal | C | Ankeny, IA | Ankeny
Drew is a big, strong young player at 6’2”, 220 lbs. He was impressive behind the plate showing good leadership qualities and the ability to call a game well. He receives well and flashed a pop time to 2B as low as 2.02. At the plate, the ball explodes off Drew’s bat. He already shows present power with more to come.

10. Ryan Arias | 3B | El Monte, CA | Northview
Ryan is a physical 3B with present strength.  He has an advanced approach at the plate showing good strike zone discipline and quick hands. The ball really comes off his bat hard. Defensively, he moves his feet well, is sure-handed and has a quick release that gets the ball efficiently across the diamond. Ryan looks to be a middle-of-the-order bat at higher levels.
