2014 Baseball Factory Rookie Pre-Season All-America Tournament: Top 10

On January 17, 42 talented players gathered in Auburndale, Florida to participate in the 2014 Baseball Factory Rookie All-America Pre-Season Tournament, powered by Under Armour.  Our staff was treated to a talented group of athletes, many possessing top tools from blistering speed, to rockets for arms both on the mound and behind the plate. While we can’t honor everyone that attended, we’d like to recognize the players who stood out at the event.

The following are the Top 10 Performances from the 2014 Baseball Factory Rookie All-America Pre-Season Tournament
 

Cole Brannen | SS | Elko, GA | Westfield Schools

Cole is an athletic SS with good baseball instincts. He shows above average speed for his age, recording a 6.88 60-yard dash. Defensively, Cole displays all the tools to be a solid SS at the next level. He reads balls well, is aggressive to the ball, and has great body control reaching a strong fielding position.  Cole has a quick exchange and makes accurate throws across the diamond with an above average arm.  At the plate, he has a smooth LH stroke and showcased a line drive approach with power potential. His swing path is consistent and he has an advanced approach at the plate.  Cole has a lot of potential and should be a player to watch as he continues to mature.

Marcus Christy | RHP | Mesa, AZ | Skyline

Marcus is an athletic RHP with a lot of upside on the mound.  He has a free and easy arm action and throws from a low ¾ arm slot.  He hides the ball well and has good deception.  Marcus pounds the zone with a solid three pitch mix including an explosive fastball with late run; a slider that breaks late in the zone; and a change-up that shows good fade.  He has a tremendous feel for pitching and knows how to work hitters.  Marcus has the potential to pitch well beyond the high school level as he continues to build upon his skill set.

Brandon Dorsey | 3B | Mount Airy, MD | Calvert Hall

Brandon is a talented 3B that can really swing the bat.  At the plate, he showcases a lot of power both during BP and games.  He hit several home runs during BP and followed in the game with a home run and a couple extra base hits. He has an aggressive approach at the plate and makes consistent hard contact. Brandon displays all the tools to be a middle of the order hitter at the next level. In the infield, he has a quick first step and excellent range.  His hands are soft and he displays above average footwork playing through the ball well. Arm strength is strong with good carry across the diamond. Overall, Brandon is an impact player and will be a prospect that should continue to get quite a bit of attention in the years to come.

Brandon Garland | LHP | Unicoi, TN | Unicoi County

Brandon is a tall, athletic LHP with a lot of potential.  On the mound his arm action is loose and quick, and he pounds the zone with a powerful fastball.  His fastball topped at 85mph with late life in the zone.  Along with his above average FB he throws a curve with 1/7 shape and a change-up with good sink and arm side run.  He is around the zone with all three pitches and knows how to change speeds.  Brandon gets great extension on all of his pitches and uses his lower half well.  With his competitive attitude and mound presence, Brandon has the look of a quality arm for years to come.
 

Tyler Chase Wilkerson | OF/LHP | Douglasville, GA | South Paulding

Tyler is an athletic OF/LHP with a good frame and strong set of tools.  He showed the ability during camp to be a solid option in the OF as well as on the mound.  Defensively, he has quick feet, takes proper routes to the ball, and works to get behind the baseball.  He is aggressive with his approach but shows excellent body control.  He is fundamentally sound in the OF and will compete to play all three OF positions at the next level.  On the mound, this lefty has a great presence with a good feel for pitching.  He throws three pitches for strikes and attacks hitters.  His fastball has late life and good arm side run, topping out at 84mph.  His curve has great tilt with 1/7 shape and his change-up shows good fade.  With his pitches and clean mechanics, Tyler is a prospect that has a bright future on the mound.  At the plate, Tyler is a switch hitter that has a good load, strong balance, and quick hands.  He shows the ability to spray the ball to all fields from both sides of the plate.  There is more power potential from the right side as he is more consistent with that swing.  Overall, Tyler shows the potential to be solid recruit as a two-way player.

Tucker Kuykendall | RHP | Candler, NC | Enka

Tucker is a big RHP with a tremendous upside on the mound.  He has four pitches including a fastball with late life, a curve ball with an 11/5 shape, a change-up with good sink, and a developing cutter. Tucker pitches comfortably in the low 80s, having topped out at 82mph in Florida. He works quickly on the mound and displays good rhythm.  His arm action is fluid and he gets good extension on his pitches.  He demonstrates good mound presence and knows how to pitch.  Tucker will be a quality pitcher at the next level and will be fun to watch as he continues to physically mature.

Kelby Weyler | SS | Village Mills, TX | Warren

Kelby is a primary SS that also shows potential on the mound.  In the infield, he has quick feet, sure hands, and has a solid fielding position.  He is aggressive with his approach and stays under control while showing proper footwork.  His exchange is quick and he makes accurate throws with good carry across the diamond.  On the mound, he works quickly and pounds the zone with his explosive fastball and good curve.  His curve has 11/5 shape with good depth and the potential to be a swing and miss pitch. At the plate, he has a good load, strong balance, and he uses his lower half well.  His bat speed is quick and he takes a direct path to the ball squaring it up consistently.  He showed that he is a gap-to-gap hitter with power potential and should be a tough out at the next level with his current approach.  Kelby is a natural leader and will continue to compete at a high level with his skills and knowledge of the game.

Ben Mottern | C | Johnson City, TN | Science Hill

Ben is an athletic catcher and shows the ability to be a natural leader.  Behind the dish, he receives with soft hands, quick feet and is very agile when blocking, showing the proper technique.  He has a quick exchange and makes accurate throws to his target with above average arm strength.  At the plate, he has an open stance, good load, and strong balance.  He finds the barrel on a consistent basis and is a line drive hitter with a good opposite field approach.  He is a tough out as he battles and works the count in his favor with every at bat.  Ben has a lot of upside and showed that he is one of the better defensive catchers for his age.  With his ability and strong fundamentals as a catcher, he will be fun to watch as he continues to physically mature.

Brad Ellis | 3B/RHP | Brooksville, FL | Hernando

Brad is a solid 3B/ RHP with a good frame and set of tools.  In the infield, he has quick feet, sure hands, and good range.  His exchange is quick and he makes accurate throws with good life.  On the mound, he has a good presence and stays around the zone with his fastball and curve.  He hides the ball well and is a tough look for hitters.  His arm action is fluid and free, and he has good timing with his separation.  His fastball shows good arm-side run and his curve can be a swing and miss pitch, showing good depth and late movement.  At the plate, he has a quick bat with a quiet stance.  His balance is strong, his lower half is advanced, and he delivers the barrel with good accuracy.  Brad has the potential to be a power threat in any lineup and should hit in the middle of the order at the next level with his gap-to-gap approach.

Abraham Sequera | SS | Doral, FL | Archbishop Edward McCarthy

Abraham is a true student of the game with good feel at the plate and in the field. Defensively, he has sure hands, fluid footwork, and a controlled approach to the ball. His exchange is clean and he uses his body well to make throws across the diamond. Offensively, Abraham is a switch hitter who shows potential from both sides of the plate. He has natural rhythm and fluid swing path from each side. His patient approach and knowledge of the strike zone gives him the potential to be a top of the lineup hitter at the next level. Improvements in his foot speed can elevate his game, but overall Abraham shows potential to be a special player in the future.
