2014 Under Armour All-America Pre-Season Tournament: 2014 Grad Honorable Mentions

With over 400 players participating in the 2014 Under Armour All-America Pre-Season Tournament, powered by Baseball Factory, our scouts were treated to players from across the country that had many tools from blistering foot speed, to rockets for arms on the mound and behind the plate. While we cannot honor everyone that attended we did want to highlight a few players that stood out.

The following are the 2014 Grads Honorable Mentions from the 2014 Under Armour All-America Pre-Season Tournament.

Players are listed alphabetically.

Ryan Arias | 3B | El Monte, CA | San Gabriel
Big, strong 3B prospect (6’3”/215lbs) with a complete game. At the plate, balls come off the bat hard with pull side power. As a defender he takes good angles, has soft hands and makes strong, accurate throws across the diamond.

Taylor Avakian | OF | Sacramento, CA | Jesuit
A strong, physical young player who swings the bat with authority from the right side. Handles the wood bat with ease generating good bat speed and driving balls to all parts of the park. Profiles as a run-producing LF.

Jacob Carte | OF/RHP | Charlotte, NC | Hickory Grove Christian
A talented 2-way player with a clean repeatable swing that leads to consistent hard contact. He also is upper 80s on the mound with downhill plane and a tight curveball.

DeAaron Christian | OF/RHP | Madison Heights, VA | Amherst County
Very athletic young prospect who needs refining  but has a very high ceiling. On the mound has a quick, loose arm that generates velocity up to 90mph that goes with a late breaking curve. Glides to balls in the OF and uses his arm strength well. Swing is loose and compact with flashes of hard contact.

Patrick Dorrian | SS | Kingston, NY | Kingston
Strong, athletic infielder with a quick bat from the LH side. Swing has good plane and he shows a mature middle-of-the-field approach. Has a knack for the barrel. Defensively, he is aggressive and takes good routes finishing plays with an accurate arm.

Armand Ewusie | OF | Vancouver, BC | Total Education
Tools guy with a bright future. Runs (6.69 in the 60), throws well from the OF and has the reads and range to play CF. RH stroke is short and simple with very few holes. Line drive contact with good barrel accuracy.

Johnny Gonzalez | RHP | Corpus Christi, TX | Moody
Thin, athletic RHP with a quick arm. Delivery is fluid and leads to fastball velocity that touched 90 mph. Also throws a slider with 11-5 tilt and 2-plane break. Change is a work in progress. Has overall feel for pitching. Can also play the OF and ran a 6.82 in the 60.

Daniel Guerrero | RHP | Rosemead, CA | San Gabriel
Confident RHP who is in total control on the mound. Coordinated delivery with rhythm that delivers strikes. Comfortable pitching in the upper 80s with his fastball that has some downhill plane and mixing in a big breaking curve. His change is very effective with good arm speed. Polished arm who can win.

Zachary Huarte | RHP | Villa Park, CA | Servite
One of the rare pitchers who has a swing-and-miss fastball. Low ¾ arm slot produces a FB that has late sink and tail with velocity into the upper 80s. He complements that with a breaking ball that has good ¾ tilt and a change that shows promise. Good athletic frame to go with loose arm and solid stuff.

Perez Knowles | OF/LHP | Rabun Gap, GA | Rabun Gap
A solid 2-way prospect with an exciting mix of tools. Swings from the right side and shows gap power from an aggressive approach. Range and arm fit corner OF profile. On the mound shows mid 80s velocity from the left side with a hard downer curve that is an out pitch. Also has a feel for a change.

Jack Pierce | LHP | Pelham, AL | Pelham
Big, imposing left-hander on the mound. Solid 3-pitch mix includes fastball in the mid to upper 80s, curve with good tilt and change with deception and tail. All three are thrown from strikes out of a repeatable delivery.

Dakota Phillips | C | Nacogdoches, TX | Nacogdoches
Sturdy, strong build (6’2”/195lbs) on this catching prospect with tools. Solid receiver with times to 2B under 2.0 and good game awareness. LH bat results in loud contact to all fields with present strength leading to leverage power.

Hector Ponce | 3B | Caliacan, Mexico | Preperatoria Sep
Solidly built 3B with all-around skills. Very reliable defender with quiet, soft and sure hands in the IF. Can make plays on the run and throw from different angles with ease. At the plate takes an aggressive hack with bat speed and present power with more in the future.

Jose Quintana | 2B | Land O Lakes, FL | Tampa Bay Christian
Outstanding feel for hitting from the left side. He has rhythm and overall “hitterish” actions in the box. Line drive stoke with some bat speed. Also is a sure-handed defender, but an arm issue limited his throwing.

Chris Rocha | RHP | Mission, TX | Palmview
RHP with advanced stuff that can dominate HS hitters. FB is in the upper 80s with good life to it while slider is sharp and late leading to many weak swings. He also uses a split as his change that is very difficult to pick up. Athletic delivery and a clean, quick arm point to a bright future.

Devin Stueck | OF | Omaha, NE | Westside
Athletic OFer with a solid set of tools. Runs well (6.67) and has a strong and accurate arm from the outfield. His LH stroke is natural and pure with a knack for the barrel.

Jacob Santamaria | LHP | Oceanside, NY | Oceanside Senior
LHP with a lean, projectable frame and long arms. Repeatable delivery and good arm action lead to consistent strikes. Has feel for off-speed stuff as well and is a competitor on the mound. Lots of upside here.

Taylor Varnell  | LHP | Sayre, OK | Sayre
Tall LHP with long limbs and a clean arm. He uses a deliberate but balanced delivery and has good command of three pitches. There is more in the tank with this young pitching prospect.

Zayne Willems | C | Aledo, TX | Aledo
