The Under Armour Baseball Factory National Tryout Tour rolled through Oklahoma on Sunday, September 13, with a stop at Jim Wade Stadium on the campus of Oklahoma City University (OCU).

The OCU Stars finished the 2015 season with a record of 46-13, and won the NAIA Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament on a grand slam in the top of the ninth inning. From there, they went on to host the the NAIA Baseball Championship Opening Round Oklahoma City Bracket, where they would eventually lose in the championship game to end their season.

Our event saw a familiar face post his sixth sub-seven 60 yard dash, a catcher trim more than one-tenth of a second off his pop time, and two right-handed pitchers gain at least three miles per hour on their fastball.

Among the new faces we saw, 2017 C Zack Matthews posted the most impressive results — including a rarely seen reading of 99 mph.

Top performers by measurable category appear below:

At the March 2015 Under Armour Baseball Factory National Tryout in Oklahoma City, 2016 OF Peyton Ravencraft (Oklahoma City, OK) posted his fifth sub-seven 60 yard dash at a Baseball Factory event.

His first sub-seven time was 6.82, and came in June 2013. His subsequent times were in the 6.9 range, until a 6.80 at the previously mentioned March 2015 Oklahoma City tryout.

At the same time, his raw velocity was trending up. He started at 73 mph in March 2013 and got up to 76 mph about six months later. He was up one more tick to 77 mph by March 2014, and made a big jump up to 83 mph by July 2014 at the Under Armour Southwest Championships. Since then, he’s been consistently between 81 and 83 mph — solidifying a 10 mph improvement in less than eighteen months.

He ran 6.93 and posted 82 mph raw velocity most recently, and recorded an impressive 93 mph bat exit velocity.

Now, about five months later, he trimmed over one-tenth of a second off the low end of his range (down from 2.37 to 2.24) and got the upper end of his range down from 2.43 to 2.34.

Last September at the Under Armour Baseball Factory Tryout in Oklahoma City, 2016 RHP Joseph Jones (Bartlesville, OK) topped at 77 mph and ran 8.13 in the 60 yard dash.

A few months later, he attended the Under Armour Recruiting Classic in Arizona. As is often the case in December, he showed a little less velocity — but he worked on his skills and competed in a tournament setting to apply his skills to live situations.

Now, one year after we first saw him, he nudged his top end fastball up three ticks to 80 mph, and lowered his 60 yard dash by nearly three-tenths of a second (down from 8.13 to 7.85).

2016 RHP Coleman Rhoads (Sayre, OK) has seen a steady rise in his fastball velocity over the course of three Baseball Factory events in the last year and a half.

At the March 2014 Under Armour Baseball Factory National Tryout & College PREP, Rhoads topped at 74 with his fastball and spun a 53-57 mph breaking ball. A few months later at the Omaha National World Series, he got his fastball up to 76 mph and added quite a bit of velocity to his breaking ball (up from 57 to 64 mph).

By March 2015, one year after we first saw him, he had his top end fastball up to 79 mph and his breaking ball now consistently into the low 60s.

Most recently, he saw a big jump with his breaking ball — with the low end of 66 mph now firmer than the upper end of his range has been so far, and with the upper end now up to 70 mph. His fastball stayed at 79 on the upper end of the range, though the low end of the range moved up from 73 to 77. The breaking ball velocity jump and the tightening of the fastball velocity range both indicate the potential for a future fastball velocity increase.
