372 Baseball Factory Alums Selected in the 2017 MLB Draft

The 2017 MLB Draft is in the books with many Baseball Factory alumni having their name called over the course of the three day event, as 372 alums were selected, up from last year’s number of 317.

There were some impressive numbers coming out of the draft, including all 30 Major League teams selecting at least one Factory alum. All alumni selected attended at least one event in the program, ranging from Under Armour National Tryout and College PREP events all across the country, to Team One showcase and tournament play, to Baseball Factory’s Player Development Team and Training events, out to Arizona for the Under Armour All-America Pre-Season Tournament and all the way to Wrigley Field in Chicago for the Under Armour All-America Game.

In the first round and Competitive Balance Round A alone, 22 Factory alums were selected, including Royce Lewis and Hunter Greene – stars in the 2016 Under Armour All-America Game – who went No. 1 and No. 2 for the Minnesota Twins and Cincinnati Reds, respectively.

Seven of the first nine selections were Factory alums and can be found in the recap of the first 10 picks, here.

Speaking of Under Armour All-Americans, the tradition holds strong and continues on as 38 former All-Americans were selected in this year’s draft, including nine in the first round. In addition to Lewis, Greene and Jo Adell, who went No. 10 overall to the Los Angeles Angels, other first round All-America selections from previous years games included, RHP Shane Baz going 12th overall to the Pittsburgh Pirates, first baseman Nick Pratto, 14th overall to the Kansas City Royals, OF Heliot Ramos, 19th overall to the San Francisco Giants, University of Oregon LHP and 2013 Under Armour All-American, David Peterson, 20th overall to the New York Mets, DL Hall, 21st overall to the Baltimore Orioles and LSU RHP and 2013 Under Armour All-American, Alex Lange, 30th overall to the Chicago Cubs.

There were a couple Under Armour Pre-Season All-Americans sprinkled in at the top, starting with Vanderbilt’s Jeren Kendall, a two-time Pre-Season All-American in 2012 and 2013, going 23rd overall to the Dodgers and Jeter Downs, a 2015 Pre-Season All-American, going 32nd overall in Competitive Balance Round A to the Reds.

24 more alums were drafted in the second round, with a handful previously attending a College PREP event, including Wake Forest’s Stuart Fairchild, drafted 38th overall by the Reds. Fairchild attended a 2012 College PREP event in Bellevue, WA and Mark Vientos, who attended a 2015 College PREP in Delray Beach, FL as well as Futures East and National Florida events (59th overall to the Mets). In the third round, two more were selected in Oregon State’s KJ Harrison (84th overall to the Milwaukee Brewers, PREP event in Kapolei, HI) and Wyatt Mills (93rd overall to the Seattle Mariners, PREP event in Spokane, WA).

Other former All-Americans selected on the first night and second day included: Drew Waters (41st overall to the Braves), LSU’s Greg Deichmann (43rd overall to the Athletics), Ryan Vilade (48th overall to the Rockies), Corbin Martin (2013 All-American, 56th overall to the Astros). Beginning with the 60th pick, five of the next seven selections were All-Americans from last year’s game; Adam Hall (60th – Orioles), Hagen Danner (61st – Blue Jays), Cole Brannen, who attended 10 total Baseball Factory events, including the 2016 All-America Pre-Season Tournament, (63rd – Red Sox), Quentin Holmes (64th – Indians) and Hans Crouse (66th – Rangers). 2016 All-American Conner Uselton was taken 72nd overall by the Pirates in the Competitive Balance Round B.

Later in the third, the Reds got yet another talented All-American, tabbing left-hander, Jacob Heatherly 77th overall. The Oakland Athletics got perhaps the best defensive infielder in the entire draft with their selection of Nick Allen, 81st overall. In the fourth round, the Orioles selected 2016 Under Armour All-American, RHP Jack Conlon. The Sugar Land, TX native showed a three-pitch repertoire on the Wrigley Field mound last July and was a two-time Under Armour Pre-Season All-American in 2015 and 2016 and also attended the 2015 Baseball Factory Futures Texas showcase.

The Boston Red Sox and Minnesota Twins snagged big time talent as Alex Scherff was selected in the fifth round by Boston and Minnesota got yet another talented middle infielder by snagging Ricardo de la Torre in the sixth round. Both Scherff and de la Torre played in last year’s All-America Game.

It’s later in the draft that teams really do their homework and try to snag talent that other teams may have overlooked, hoping to find that diamond in the rough.

A few come to mind that fit this category, including Justin Connell, 11th round by the Washington Nationals, Milwaukee’s two selections of JeVon Ward in the 12th round and Christian Santana in the 15th round. Perhaps more huge upside steals include, high school lefty, Logan Allen, taken in the 16th round by the Orioles and Matthew Givin in the 20th round by the Marlins. All four players are former Pre-Season All-Americans.

We see many talented players attend Team One Showcases in the east, south and especially on the west coast, and the event is a springboard for how far they will go in the game of baseball. Jordan Pearce, who attended the 2011 Team One West Futures event, was selected in the 21st round by the Tigers, Turner Larkins, who attended the 2012 Team One Futures Texas event, also went in the 21st round to the Blue Jays. In the 24th round, the Rockies selected Jesse Lepore who attended the 2012 Team One Futures East event. Quincy Nieporte, part of the Florida State Seminoles squad who is in this year’s College World Series, was selected in the 26th round by the Philadelphia Phillies and attended seven high-profile Baseball Factory and Team One events down in Florida and facing good competition in the Southeast Championships and Firecracker Classic in 2013.

Other former All-Americans that got their names called included: Cobi Johnson (29th round – Los Angeles Angels), Sati Santa Cruz (32nd round – Phillies), Hunter Ruth (32nd round – Cubs), Brady McConnell (33rd round – Reds), Kyle Hurt (34th round – Phillies), Jake Eder (34th round – Mets), Cole Turney (34th round – Indians), Ben Ramirez (35th round – Cubs) and Tanner Burns (37th round – Yankees).
