Additional Scouting Notes From Under Armour Futures Texas

36 of the top players from Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana were chosen for the 2016 Team One Futures Texas Showcase at Highland Park High School in Dallas, TX. Here are more scouting notes for players committed to top Division I programs from the event, which took place last Saturday, November 5th.

Derrick Cherry – (Committed to University of Houston)

Derrick Cherry

Derrick is a capable two-way player both as an infielder and on the mound. He showed 92 mph arm strength and 92 mph exit velocity off the bat with good hands in the infield and some pop in his RH swing.

Mason Cooper – Mason is a RHP that throws from a high arm slot resulting in good downhill plane and natural cut to his upper 80s fastball that touched 90 mph. Showed feel for both a curve and change.

Brandon Deskins – A LHP with a thin, wiry frame, Brandon’s fastball jumped out of his hand making the upper 80s velocity play even better. He struck out 3 of the first 4 hitters he faced throwing consistent strikes despite some head movement in his delivery.

Carlos Flores, Jr.

Carlos Flores, Jr – (Committed to University of Houston)

Carlos has a physical 6’3”/215 body with a solid delivery. He is a true three-pitch guy with a FB that sat in the 85-88 mph range, a put-away curve and some feel for his change.

Mateo Gil – Mateo is a dynamic athlete with easy, natural actions. He is confident on the field and his loose swing generates very good bat speed with barrel accuracy. In the infield, he has sure hands and plenty of arm across the diamond (92 mph raw arm strength).

Jose Gutierrez

Albert Gonzalez – A slower paced delivery with a slight hesitation adds to the deception for this RHP. This makes Albert’s low 90s fastball get on hitters in a hurry. He shows some feel for his change and has a developing breaking ball.

Jose Gutierrez – (Committed to Dallas Baptist)

Big LH power is the calling card for Jose who has an aggressive stroke with bat speed and loft. He has a late running start in his swing, but when he is on time the contact is loud. He drove several balls over the RF fence during batting practice.

Korey Holland –  (Committed to University of Texas) A quick-twitch athlete, Korey has the speed and instincts to stay in CF at the next level. His short stroke can catch up to velocity and he seems to know his role as a table setter in the lineup.

Keylon Mack – Keylon is a just a natural hitter. He looks comfortable and confident in the box – seeing the ball well, and doing serious damage from the left side. He has a quick bat, showing pull power in BP and going 2-for-3 in game play.

Cole Moore – (Committed to Texas Tech)

A strong, mature frame gives Cole the look of a catcher who can handle a lot of innings behind the plate. He threw a 1.98 to 2B and showed a simple, quick stroke, hitting line drives to all fields.

Jacob Navejas – (Committed to Rice)

Despite finishing the football season with a physical game the night before the event, Jacob flashed some of the tools that make him an excellent catching prospect. He is athletic (7.08 in the 60), has present strength (86 mph exit velocity) and threw a 1.96 to 2B.

Jack Neely

Jack Neely – (Committed to University of Texas) At 6’8” Jack is the intimidating presence on the mound and gets the downhill plane to his stuff that you would expect. There is lots of upside here with more velocity to come and the makings of a solid downer curveball.

Nate Rombach – One of only two 2019 grads in attendance, Nate showed very well. He is a physical 6’3”/185 who will be very strong in the future. He handles pitchers well, threw a 2.0 to 2B and takes an aggressive RH swing that smoked a ground rule 2B to left-center during the game.

Jack Sigrist – Jack had a solid all-around day flashing some tools (6.71 in the 60), but more importantly performing when it counts – the game. He went 2-for-2 with a walk and made the expected plays in the infield.

Luke Trahan – (Committed to Dallas Baptist) Luke has an electric arm as evidenced by his 98 mph raw arm strength and a fastball that touched 92. While he showed well at 3B, Luke’s highest ceiling is on the mound where his combination of lively fastball and low 80s tight slider create problems for hitters.

David VanVooren

David VanVooren – (Committed to Wichita State)

David recorded the fastest 60 time with a 6.57 and then used it in the game closing a ton of ground and making a diving catch in right-center field. He also showed some patience at the plate and a line drive stroke.

Treet Williams – (Committed to Dallas Baptist)

Treet stands out as a hard-to-find switch-hitting catcher with a high baseball IQ. He loves the game, is an advanced receiver, threw a 1.98 to 2B and showed 90 mph raw arm strength. His stroke is sound from both sides of the plate with more power from the left.
