Baseball America Announces 2018 Pre-Season College All-America Teams

As we turn the final corner of the long off-season, it’s time to take a look at talent heading into the 2018 season. And as they have at this time of year for the last 30+ years, Baseball America has released this year’s Pre-Season College All-America Teams, according to surveys conducted and voted on by scouting directors.

*Baseball Factory events attended are in parentheses.

First Team

C Joey Bart (Jr.) – Georgia Tech (2014 UA BF All-America Pre-Season Tournament) Bart hit for power last season, crushing 13 homers as he’s positioned himself as one of the top catchers – both offensively and defensively – heading into the 2018 Draft.

1B Seth Beer (Jr.) – Clemson (2014, 2015 UA All-America Game) One of the most respected hitters in college ball, Beer was second in the nation in walks last season (64), hitting .298 with 16 homers and 53 RBI.

3B Alec Bohm (Jr.) – Wichita State (2013 UA BF National Tryout) Bohm can hit the baseball really well, posting batting averages of .303 and .305 in his first two seasons respectively with the Shockers. Bohm hit 11 homers, drove in 40 and scored 44 runs

OF Greyson Jenista (Jr.) – Wichita State (2013 UA BF National Tryout) The second Shocker to be named a First-Team All-American, Jenista is widely viewed as one of the best pure hitters in the ’18 class, batting .320 during the regular season. In Cape Cod Summer ball with Cotuit Kettleers, Jenista won the MVP award, hitting .310 with three homers and 16 RBI.

OF Travis Swaggerty (Jr.) – South Alabama (2014 UA BF College PREP) Swaggerty hit .362 with 11 doubles, 10 homers and 56 RBI in 55 games for the Jaguars as they finished 40-21 overall and second place in the Sun Belt Conference.

Second Team

1B Luken Baker (Jr.) – TCU (2012 Team One Futures Texas, 2014 UA All-America Game) Now focused primarily as a hitter for the Horned Frogs, Baker hit over .300 for the second consecutive season with eight doubles, eight homers and 41 RBI, while drawing more walks (40) than strikeouts (36).

2B Devin Mann (Jr.)  – Louisville (2013 UA BF College PREP) Mann played 64 games last season as a sophomore on a team that finished first in the ACC (53-12 overall) and went to the College World Series, slashing .268/.363/.434 with 11 doubles, eight homers, 44 RBI and 32 walks.

3B John Aiello (Jr.)  – Wake Forest (2014 Baseball Factory Team One South Showcase) Aiello had a huge sophomore season, named to Second-Team All-ACC for the Deacs’, hitting .328 with 17 doubles, 20 home runs, driving in 53, while starting all 63 games. He didn’t commit an error the final 20 games of the season, finishing with a .952 fielding percentage.

LHP Tim Cate (Jr.)  – Connecticut (2012 UA BF National Tryout) One of the best left-handers in the country, Cate produces low walk totals, while racking up the strikeouts (over 12 K/9 last season). Cate made 12 starts (including a complete-game shutout) going 4-3 with a 3.33 ERA.

LHP Konnor Pilkington (Jr.)  – Mississippi State (2013 UA BF National Tryout, 2013 Baseball Factory Team One South) Konnor started 19 games for the Bulldogs as the ace of the staff, leading the team in innings pitched (108) and strikeouts (111), collecting an 8-5 record with a 3.08 ERA.

UT Tyler Holton (Jr.)  – Florida State (2013 UA Fall Classic, 2015 UA Memorial Day Classic) Holton was an All-ACC First Teamer in ’17, pitching and playing first base for the Seminoles. Holton made 18 starts, going 10-3 with a 2.34 ERA and 144 K’s in 119 1/3 innings.

Third Team

C Cal Raleigh (Jr.) – Florida State (2014 UA All-America Game) Raleigh was the only player to start all 69 games last season, struggled some with the batting average, but had 14 multi-hit games on the season, with 16 doubles, nine homers and 39 RBI.

1B Alfonso Rivas (Jr.) – Arizona (2014 UA BF Team One West, 2014 UA Southwest Championships) Rivas was a First-Team All-Pac-12 selection for the Wildcats, leading the conference in on-base percentage (.483), hitting .371 with 13 doubles, seven home runs, 63 RBI and 39 walks.

2B Nick Dunn (Jr.) – Maryland (2013 UA BF National Tryout) Dunn started 61 games last season and 118 consecutive overall for the Terrapins. Dunn hit .261 with 13 doubles, a triple, five homers and 32 RBI last season.

3B Jonathan India (Jr.) – Florida (2012 UA BF Team One Futures East, 2014 UA BF Team One Florida) Played in 59 games (57 starts) for the National Champion Gators. Collected 16 multi-hit games, batting .274 with six home runs and 34 RBI, including a team-high 19 two-out RBI’s last season. He also led the team in stolen bases with 13.

OF Carlos Cortes (So.) – South Carolina (2014 UA BF Futures East, 2015 UA BF College PREP) The only sophomore of the Factory bunch, Cortes hit .286 in 50 games as a freshman with the Gamecocks, collecting nine doubles, a triple, 12 homers and 41 RBI. Cortes was named to the 2017 SEC All-Freshman Team and SEC All-Tournament Team.

OF Alex McKenna (Jr.) – Cal Poly (2013 UA BF National Tryout) Had a huge sophomore season, hitting .356 and was a First-Team All-Big West Conference selection. Collected 11 doubles, two triples, five homers, 31 RBI and 13 stolen bases, while also finishing 30th in the nation in hits per game (1.50) for the Mustangs.

LHP Kris Bubic (Jr.) – Stanford (2014 UA Southwest Championships) Made 15 starts for the Cardinal in 2017, finishing with a 2.79 ERA, good for sixth-best in the Pac-12, along with 96 strikeouts (both team-highs). Stanford won his final seven starts of the 2017 season.

LHP Steven Gingery (Jr.) – Texas Tech (2013, 2014, 2015 Ryan Lemmon Invitational, 2014 UA Southwest Championships, 2014 UA BF College PREP, 2015 UA BF All-America Pre-Season Tournament) Gingery dominated during his sophomore season, as the left-hander was named Big 12 Pitcher of the Year by the league’s coaches, leading the team with a 1.58 ERA (fifth-best in the nation) with the third-most strikeouts (107) in the conference, going 10-1 in 91 1/3 IP.

UT Matt Wallner (So.) Southern Miss (2014 UA BF National Tryout) Wallner was named National Freshman of the Year by Baseball America in 2017, hitting 19 homers and 63 RBI, a .463 on-base percentage and 45 walks, while pitching out of the bullpen for the Eagles, collecting three saves and a 1.84 ERA in nine appearances.
