Baseball Factory Alumni Notebook (Week of 5/20/18)
Each week in the Alumni Notebook, we look back at notable performances from around the game of baseball, across high school, collegiate and professional ranks. Steve Bernhardt, Executive Vice President of Baseball Operations for the Factory provides information on the Factory alumni.
MLB
Austin Meadows – The former Under Armour All-American made his Major League debut for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Meadows has gone 5 for his first 11 including his first HR.
Brandon Belt – The Giants’ 1B has swung a hot bat early in the season. He is currently hitting .313 with 10 doubles, a triple, 11 home runs and 29 runs driven in.
Nolan Arenado – The perennial All-Star and former Baseball Factory Team One participant is hitting .325 with nine doubles, two triples, 8 HR and 25 RBI.
MiLB
MJ Melendez – MJ earned South Atlantic Player of the Week honors by doing damage at the plate while excelling, as usual, behind it. In his last seven games, MJ has hit five home runs and driven in 14 runs.
Jo Adell – The former two-time Under Armour All-American hit five home runs during a six-game stretch and earned a promotion to High A Inland Empire.
Nick Gordon – Another former UA AA player, Nick also earned a promotion this week. After starting the year at Double-A Chattanooga and hitting .333 with 10 doubles, three triples, five homers, 20 RBI and seven stolen bases before being bumped up to Triple-A Rochester for the Twins.
College
With the regular season ending, the college post-season awards have begun to roll in. In the first wave of accolades, several Baseball Factory alums were named Player of the Year for their respective conferences. Congratulations to theses POY winners after outstanding regular seasons:
Kody Clemens – Texas, Big 12 Player of the Year (.344 avg, 19 homers, 61 RBI .703% slugging)
Joey Bart – Georgia Tech, ACC Player of the Year (.361 avg, 16 homers, 38 RBI, 138 total bases, .474 on-base percentage)
Jonathan India – Florida, SEC Player of the Year (.365 avg, 11 doubles, three triples, 16 homers, 40 RBI, .506 on-base percentage)
Bren Spillane – Illinois, Big 10 Player of the Year (.407 avg, 22 homers, 57 RBI, 14 stolen bases, .512 on-base percentage)
Gabe Holt – Texas Tech, Big 12 Freshman of the Year (.341 avg, nine doubles, three triples, five homers, 33 RBI, 36 walks)
High School
Braxton Ashcraft – Braxton led Robinson HS to a 2-0 victory in a one-game playoff over Madisonville HS and fellow Under Armour All-American Matt Rudis. Ashcraft struck out nine in the shutout with reports of him touching 95 mph.
Joe Magrisi – Joe Magrisi is in the midst of a scoreless streak of 51 innings, breaking the former San Diego area record held by former major leaguer, David Wells. Magrisi is now 11-0 on the mound for the season with 104 Ks in 77 innings pitched. He has also swung the bat well with seven homers and 25 RBI. Magrisi participated in the 2016 Baseball Factory Futures West Showcase.
Ryan Weathers – Weathers continues to dominate and was rewarded for his efforts by being named Mr. Baseball in Class A for the state of Tennessee. This is the second consecutive year that the Under Armour All-American has received the award.
