Baseball Factory Alumni Show Defensive Skills Are Golden
Major League Baseball announced Gold Glove winners for the 2017 season last night with five Baseball Factory alums taking home hardware.
Colorado Rockies third baseman Nolan Arenado, a 2007 Team One West alum, won his fifth consecutive Gold Glove, becoming just the second player in Major League history to win at least five Gold Gloves to start their career, the other being Ichiro Suzuki, who won 10 consecutive Gold Gloves (from 2001 to 2010) with the Seattle Mariners. Arenado finished with a .979 fielding percentage, committing just nine errors in 423 chances.
Minnesota Twins outfielder Byron Buxton, who starred in the 2011 Under Armour All-America Game, claimed his first Gold Glove in a season where he led the majors in advanced metrics with 25 outs above average. Buxton caught an MLB-high 29 catches that Statcast™ rated as four or five stars and his 92.9 percent success rate on his 28 four-star chances was the highest for any outfielder with more than six, according to MLB.com.
San Francisco Giants shortstop Brandon Crawford snagged his third straight Gold Glove, becoming the first National League shortstop to win three consecutive awards since Jimmy Rollins did it for the Philadelphia Phillies from 2007 to 2009. Crawford attended the 2004 Team One West Showcase and was a Pre-Season All-American in 2005.
Kansas City Royals first baseman Eric Hosmer won his fourth Gold Glove in the last five years, becoming just the ninth player in major league history to win that many for a first baseman. Hosmer, a 2006 Baseball Factory Pre-Season All-American, played in all 162 games for the first time in his career and led American League first basemen in innings (1338.0) and total chances (1314), while finishing second in putouts (1314), according to MLB.com.
Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Zack Greinke won his fourth consecutive Gold Glove, the first to do so for a pitcher since Hall of Famer Greg Maddux did the same, winning 13 straight from 1990 to 2002. Greinke, who went 17-7 with a 3.20 ERA and 215 strikeouts, participated in the 2000 Team One East Showcase.
