Baseball Factory College and High School Alumni Notebook (Week of 3/11/19)

Baseball Factory’s College and High School Alumni Notebook takes a glimpse into notable performances from around the collegiate and high school ranks throughout the season. Steve Bernhardt, Chief Baseball Officer for Baseball Factory, provides information on Factory alumni.

College

Derek Daly

Brody Clifford | OF | Dixie State

Brody was named the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Player of the Week after a record-breaking game vs Adams State. He went 5-for-7 with four homers and nine runs batted in while scoring six runs. Clifford, who attended a Baseball Factory National Tryout in Mesa, Arizona back in 2013, broke or tied six Dixie State individual single-game school records en route to his Player of the Week nod.

Derek Daly | IF | Colorado School of Mines

Jaxx Groshans

Derek capped off a big four-game series against New Mexico Highlands by going 3-for-3 with two home runs and six RBIs in the final game. He is now hitting .383 for the season with 9 HRs and 28 RBIs. Daly participated in a Baseball Factory National Tryout in Mesa, Arizona and Baseball Factory’s National West Showcase in 2015.

Jaxx Groshans | C | Kansas

Jaxx has been off to a great start with the Jayhawks, flashing lots of power. He is now hitting  .415 on the season with 8 HR and 22 RBIs. He has also walked 16 times. Jaxx, a junior at Kansas, attended a Baseball Factory National Tryout in 2014 and was later a 2015 Under Armour Pre-Season All-American.

Collin Hoffman | RHP | Otterbein

Collin recorded saves in three straight games for Otterbein. He now has 12 strikeouts in 8 1/3 innings pitched on the season and has only allowed three hits over five appearances. Hoffman attended a Baseball Factory National Tryout event in Dublin, OH back in 2013.

Tucker Maxwell | OF | Georgia

Maxwell was named the SEC Player of the Week and the Collegiate Baseball Player of the Week. He went 9-for-16 with three homers, drove in 15 runs and had eight stolen bases in leading the eighth-ranked Georgia Bulldogs to a 5-0 week. Maxwell, a native of Suwanee, GA, participated in the 2014 Futures South Showcase in Peachtree City, GA.

Freddy Zamora

Davis Mikell | 1B | Castleton

After a big doubleheader, Davis, a junior, was named the NCBWA Division III National Hitter of the Week. He went 7-for-7 and reached base in all 11 plate appearances on the day. He tallied three doubles, two triples, eight runs and four RBIs. Mikell, from Vermont, performed for Baseball Factory coaches at a National Tryout in Burlington, VT back in 2014.

Erik Miller | LHP | Stanford

Miller was dominant in a win over Texas, bouncing back from a rough start against Cal State Fullerton on March 3rd. He threw six innings, allowing just one hit and striking out nine hitters on his way to being named the Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week. The junior from Wildwood, MO, has struck out 29 hitters in 21 innings pitched this season and has a 2.57 ERA. He attended a Baseball Factory National Tryout in Sauget, IL in 2015.

Freddie Zamora | SS | Miami

Freddie was named the ACC Player of the Week after a big week that was highlighted by a walk-off two-run homer against Georgia Tech. For the year, the Hurricanes’ shortstop is now hitting .406 with nine doubles, four home runs and 19 runs batted in. The sophomore from Miami, FL attended the 2014 UA Memorial Day Classic and Baseball Factory’s Futures East Showcase in 2015.

High School

Kellum Clark | IF | Brandon HS (MS)

Kellum Clark

Kellum’s big left-handed power has been on display early in the season. He has hit seven home runs in his first 10 games. He has driven in 18 runs on the year and is hitting .542. Clark is a junior and committed to Mississippi State. He participated in the 2018 Futures South Showcase last October and will test his skills further this May at Baseball Factory’s National South Showcase.

Brenden Dixon | SS | Argyle HS (TX)

Brenden has been on a tear in the last week, leading his Argyle HS team to three consecutive victories. He hit a grand slam while driving in eight runs in a win over Coppell. He went 6-for-10 over the three-game stretch with three doubles, a triple and that home run. The Texas Longhorns commit was a two-time Under Armour Pre-Season All-American (2017-18) and has participated in numerous other Baseball Factory events.

Ben Hovda

Brooks Gorman | 3B/RHP | Tattnall Square Academy (GA)

Dominant on the mound this spring, Brooks has pushed his record to 6-0 with a 0.93 ERA and 44 strikeouts in 30 innings. Also producing at the plate, he is hitting .448 with four homers and 16 RBIs. The junior was a top performer at the 2019 Under Armour All-America Pre-Season Tournament.

Ben Hovda | SS | Tuloso-Midway HS (TX)

Speed and instincts have allowed Ben to swipe an eye-popping 32 bags already this spring. He has also scored 28 runs while hitting .435 with six doubles and two triples. Hovda has participated in multiple Baseball Factory College PREP events and was a 2018 Under Armour Pre-Season All-American.

Peyton McGregor | OF | Cactus Shadows HS (AZ)

The powerfully-build McGregor has been on fire so far this year. He is hitting an impressive .464 and has already hit eight home runs with 17 driven in. McGregor participated in the 2018 Under Armour All-America Pre-Season Tournament.

Aaron Nixon | IF/RHP | McAllen HS (TX)

Nixon continues to contribute on the mound, in the field and with the bat. He is hitting a robust .468 with seven doubles and seven stolen bases, and he is a perfect 3-0 on the mound with a 0.60 ERA. He has struck out 49 in 23 1/3 innings pitched. The Texas commit was part of the 2017 National Texas Showcase.

Bobby Witt, Jr | SS | Colleyville Heritage HS (TX)

Bobby continues to prove why he is the top high school player in the country. In his last seven games, he is hitting an incredible .731 (19-26) with 20 runs scored, two doubles, three triples, seven home runs and 19 RBIs. The two-time Under Armour All-American continues to see his draft stock soar as we get closer to June.
