Three of First Five Draft Selections Are Baseball Factory Alumni

It was a banner evening for Baseball Factory alumni as 22 of the first 41 picks in Round 1 and the Lottery Round A were Baseball Factory alumni. 17 Under Armour All-Americans were taken in total, the first two rounds. Breaking it down even further, 11 All-Americans were taken in the first round, and Lottery Round A as well. Overall, 39 of the first 77 Draft selections were Baseball Factory alumni.

Mickey Moniak

And, for the sixth year in a row, Baseball Factory has seen their own selected within the first five picks of the Major League Baseball Draft.

Encinitas, CA native, Mickey Moniak was selected first overall by the Philadelphia Phillies. The 6’2, 180 pound outfielder from La Costa Canyon High School, hit .471 with six home runs, 44 RBI this season and a .921 slugging percentage, helping to lead the Mavericks to the CIF San Diego Section Open Division Tournament. Moniak attended the 2014 Under Armour Futures West Showcase where he showed an exciting combination of tools that is rarely found at the high school level.

Riley Pint

RHP Riley Pint, a RHP from St. Thomas Aquinas, becomes the highest drafted player to come out of the state of Kansas, as he was selected fourth overall to the Colorado Rockies. The reigning Gatorade State Baseball Player of the Year in Kansas, put together an outstanding season, throwing an upper 90s fastball that produced 87 strikeouts with an ERA of 0.43 in 49.0 innings pitched. Pint was the starting pitcher for the National team in last year’s Under Armour All-America Game and has registered triple digits on his fastball during this baseball season.

Corey Ray

Rounding out the trifecta of Baseball Factory alums being selected within the first five picks is University of Louisville outfielder, Corey Ray. Ray goes fifth overall to the Milwaukee Brewers and asserted himself as one of the nation’s elite outfielders last summer when he hit .355 on USA Baseball’s Collegiate National Team. In his junior season in 2016, Ray hit .319 with 16 doubles, one triple and the team lead in home runs (15) and RBI (60) in 62 games. He also led the Cardinals in walks (35) and 44 stolen bases, second-most in the country.

Going 10th overall to the Chicago White Sox was 6’3, 220 pound University of Miami catcher Zack Collins. The junior from Pembroke Pines, FL put together an outstanding season for the Hurricanes, showing plus power and a keen eye at the plate where he led the nation in walks with 69. He’s put in major work behind the plate as a catcher and hit .358 with 13 homers, 53 RBI and an OPS of 1.165. Collins performed well at the 2012 Under Armour All-America Game both behind the plate and with the bat.

Will Benson

In the middle of the first round, we saw plenty of former Baseball Factory standouts selected by Major League teams. Picks 13 through 15 were also Baseball Factory alumni, beginning with third base prospect, Josh Lowe, going 13th overall to the Tampa Bay Rays. The third baseman from Pope High School in Marietta, GA, participated in the 2014 Under Armour Memorial Day Classic and later in the year at the Futures South event where he showed well defensively at third base with good body control and arm strength at the hot corner. The next selection saw another All-American get selected, this time left-handed slugger, Will Benson was popped, 14th overall by the Cleveland Indians. It’s hard to describe in words the power Benson exhibited last year in Chicago during the player workout at UIC, but its big-time power with perhaps the best bat speed in the 2016 class.

The third straight Factory selection in the first round was an OF from New Kensington, PA, left-handed hitting Alex Kirilloff. An excellent quick-twitch athlete with a premium bat, the Minnesota Twins took Kirilloff 15th overall as he also possesses an outstanding arm that can stick in the outfield. In 2013, Kirilloff participated in the Kelly Kulina Classic.
