Day One Notebook – 2017 Under Armour All-America Pre-Season Tournament

On Saturday evening, our scouts gathered to review day one top performers and to prepare for day two. Day one saw twelve teams (teams 1-12) take BP, run the 60 yard dash and go through their defensive workout along with a single game, while the other twelve teams (teams 13-24) played a double header — those teams will workout on Sunday.

Here are notes on performances from fifteen pitchers and fifteen players among the many that caught our attention on day one.

Notebook – Players

  • One of the best breaking balls on display came from LHP Thomas Burbank (Texas Team). The curve had depth and made his mid 80s fastball play even better – leading to 9Ks
  • RHP Alberto Gonzalez III (Texas Team) showed a lively fastball that touched 90 mph, an advanced slider, a curve and a change to round out his 4-pitch arsenal. He allowed 1 hit and struck out 7.
  • Striking out his final 10 hitters was quite a statement from LHP Brett Hansen (Northern California Team). He got excellent downhill plane to his fastball and only allowed 1 hit
  • Josh Ibarra (Atlantic Team) used a long, lean frame and nearly perfect arm action to generate upper 80s velocity – touching 90 with his fastball. He got late break on his ¾ tilt breaking ball to generate some swing and miss
  • Strike thrower Jack Jasiak (Florida Team) looked mature beyond his years on the mound by filling up the zone with strikes and showing a quality curve as an out-pitch. His arm works well and he sits in the mid to upper 80s.
  • Nolan Lepkoske (South Team) is another big-bodied RHP, standing 6’5” and weighing 230. He touched 87, threw strikes throughout his outing and only allowed 1 hit.
  • At 6’7”, 220 pounds New York native Arlo Marynczak (North Team) looks the part on the mound. His outing was as impressive as his frame today as he allowed only 1 hit and struck out 10 while throwing 3 pitches for strikes
  • LHP Dillon Marsh (Atlantic Team) threw from a repeatable delivery, showed a clean arm stroke and was in complete control on the mound. He sat in the upper 80s, touching 92 and striking out 8
  • Tyler Ras (Northeast Team) used his big frame and lots of arm speed to touch 91 mph with his fastball , leading to 9 Ks. He also showed good LH power in batting practice
  • Showing some of the best command of the day, RHP J.P. Shaw carved up the hitters he faced. His fastball/curve/split mix did not allow a hit and struck out 8.
  • RHP Cooper Stinson (Georgia Team) had an excellent outing, looking in complete control on the mound throughout., and pounding RH hitters inside with his fastball that touched 87. He did not allow a hit while using his sharp breaking ball very effectively.
  • With a 3-pitch mix of a mid-to-upper 80s fastball, legitimate 12-6 curveball and avery effective change, Collin Storms (Texas Team) had an excellent outing. He struck out 7 and looked to be in cruise control throughout
  • Angel Tiburcio (East Team) is an imposing presence on the mound and was dominant in his outing. Drawing Kenley Jansen comps from the scouting staff on hand he used his heavy FB in the 88-90 range and wipeout slider to strike out 10 while allowing only 1 hit.
  • Showing one of the best curveballs of the day, Shawn Triplett (Northwest Team) struck out 8 using that curve as an out-pitch for many of them.
  • LHP Chris Weber (Lone Star Team) used quality stuff and a deceptive delivery to strike out 10 during his outing. His fastball was 84-85 mph, but played much better as hitters were late to react all day
  • Lefty Clayton Westrope (West Team) was very effective in an early game by throwing strikes and keeping hitters off balance with his 3-pitch mix
  • Big and physical at 6’6”/220 RHP Landry Wideman produced a hitless outing with 9 Ks. He used an upper 80s fastball with tail and a breaking ball with ¾ tilt.

Notebook – Pitchers

  • At 6’2”, 200 pounds Alex Binelas (North Team) has a strong frame that translates to the way he impacts the ball at the plate. He had a good BP and carried it into the game with a 3B and walk. Also ran a 6.76 in the 60.
  • Henry Davis (East Team) has one of the best arms of any catcher in the country and it is just fun to watch him throw the ball around. He impressively threw a runner out at 2B on a wild pitch off the screen today and also went 2-4 with 2 RBI in the game.
  • Xavier Edwards (East Team) continues to show that he has a feel for the game beyond his years. He went 2-3 with a bunt single, showed a mature approach taking 2 BBs and impressed with his usual outstanding defense at SS.
  • One of the most impressive things of the Day 1 at the UAAAPS Tournament was the batting practice taken by Nolan Gorman (Southwest Team), In one of his BP rounds he hit 5 HRs in 6 swings – and they were driven well off the net above the RCF wall.
  • With a loose, easy stroke, Jordan Groshans (Texas Team) peppered LF and LCF with line drives during batting practice. He went 2-2 and walked twice in his game at bats and looked fluid and athletic in the infield during his defensive workout.
  • JD Hamby (West Team) swung the bat with authority today going 2-4 with a 2B, 3B and 3 runs driven in.
  • Ryan Holgate (Northern California Team) is a physical player with a very good offensive profile. The LHH took an impressive BP and then went 1-1 with a walk in game play.
  • Max Jung-Goldberg (Northern California) showed the outstanding eye-hand coordination that allows him to find the barrel with consistency. He went 2-2 with a 1B and 2B while driving in 3 runs.
  • Infielder Austin Knight (Florida Team) continues to impress with his natural ability and feel for the game. After running a 6.96 in the 60 he went 2-2 in the game with a 3B to LF and a 1B to RF.
  • Luke Leisenring (Southwest Team) is a switch-hitting catcher with a tall, lean frame and an advanced approach at the plate. He walked twice in his 2 game at bats after showing well in BP and throwing 2.07 to 2B.
  • Keylon Mack (Pacific Team) has a thick, strong frame and outstanding “hitting hands” that were on display today. He went 2-3 going the opposite way for one of them and showing good breaking ball recognition.
  • Jose Yadiel Martinez (Southeast Team) had a big day showing an excellent hit tool during BP and running a 6.63 in the 60. In the game he went 2-2 with 2 stolen bases.
  • Some of the biggest buzz of the day surrounded 2019 OF Paul Moore (USA Team). His batting practice was eye opening with lots of loud contact and big power on display from this LHH. He showed discipline in the game walking in his only 2 at bats.
  • 3-time UAAAPS participant Cody Nisbet (Golden State Team) showed that he is comfortable on the fields here at the Chicago Cubs complex. He went 2-4 with a 2B and a BB in games.
  • Tyler Smith (Central Team) showed well on both sides of the ball in today’s games. He started an impressive double play in the infield and went 2-3 with a walk at the plate.
