Early Signing Period:
An in-depth look at this area of the recruiting process with Exclusive Staff member Woody Wingfield

Recently, I sat down with Exclusive Staff member Woody Wingfield, and asked him a few questions regarding the early signing period.

Q: What does a prospective student-athlete need to know about the early signing period?

A: In college baseball the “early” signing period refers to the college commitments made by players in mid-November, compared to the “traditional” signing period, which is customarily held in April.  While this early period has grown increasingly more popular, it only accounts for 20% of high school seniors who aspire to play collegiate baseball.  Typically, players who sign during this period are individuals who plan on attending either a top tier academic school or a top Division I baseball program.   On the strength of their reputation alone, many of the elite Division I programs take as many players as possible during the early signing period.  By completing all or most of the recruiting process in the fall, these coaches are able to focus on their spring season.

Q: What are the advantages and disadvantages of the early signing period?

A: A major advantage of the early signing period is the amount of scholarship money available, both athletic and academic.  By signing during the November period players also enjoy a more favorable admissions process.  In addition, committing to a school in the fall eliminates the chance that injury or a bad senior season could have an affect on the application process.  Making a commitment during the early signing period reduces the stress for the player, giving them time to enjoy the remainder of their senior year.   So, what are the disadvantages?  One of the major disadvantages usually concerns the undecided player who may begin to feel pressure about signing early.  This could lead to a rushed commitment with a school that ultimately might not be the best fit for them.  With less time to assess and evaluate the players, the November signing period can feel rushed for coaches as well.  Overall, the early signing period can leave out important aspects of the college recruiting process detrimental to both the coach and the player.

It is best to get as much advice and guidance as possible in order to make the right decision.

Q: What should a player do if they do not sign during the November signing period?

A: To start, players should not feel defeated if they do not sign during the early period.  Many different factors need to fall into place for a commitment to be made in November and those who do not find themselves in this position should stay positive and focus on the advantages that exist in waiting for the traditional signing period.   For example, standard applications are non-binding and therefore players can apply to multiple schools and then make a decision based on where they are accepted.  Another advantage is the additional time available to look at schools, visit campuses and meet with coaches.  This allows both the players and coaches to gather as much information as possible before making a decision.  What’s more, players have more time to improve their game, gain strength and increase physical fitness in time for their senior season.  Most importantly, players should not give up but look at what steps they need to take in order to fulfill their dreams of playing college baseball.
