Five Below 6.85, Five Above 84 in Oklahoma City

On Sunday March 22, The Under Armour National Tryout Tour rolled through the Sooner State, with a stop at Jim Wade Stadium on the campus of Oklahoma City University. Five runners posted 60 yard dash times below 6.85, while we saw five instances of velocity better than 84 mph.

The lowest run time was 6.68, turned in by 2017 left-handed hitting OF Tito Jones (Altus HS – Altus, OK). Fellow 2017, and Altus HS teammate, SS/OF Hunter Ray Cleveland posted 6.77 along with an impressive grip strength of 140 psi. 2016 Joseph Flood (Central HS – Lawton, OK), another left-handed hitting OF, posted 6.79.

2016 OF Peyton Ravencraft

2016 OF Peyton Ravencraft

We’d seen 2016 OF Peyton Ravencraft (Oklahoma Christian – Oklahoma City, OK), yet another left-handed hitting OF, post four sub-seven 60 yard dashes prior to this event. In June 2013 he ran 6.82, and went on to record times of 6.91, 6.90 and 6.97 in subsequent events before running 6.80 in Oklahoma City. His hitting ability falls nearly in line with his running ability, with those two tools complemented by solid marks on arm strength, fielding ability and raw power.

2016 C/OF Brendan Ezell

2016 C/OF Brendan Ezell

The final sub-seven run time was posted by 2016 C/OF Brendan Ezell (Heritage Hall HS – Edmond, OK) at 6.84. Ezell is much more than just a runner however. He turned in the lowest pop time at 2.01, along with the highest bat exit velocity at 86 mph, and the third highest raw velocity at 85 mph — he alone accounted for two of the five instances of velocity greater than 84 mph. Additionally, his raw power marks were tops on the day — making for a rare, and well-rounded, set of tools for a catcher.

Other top release times were turned in by 2015 C Sam Streck (Trinity Valley HS – Ft. Worth, TX) at 2.03, and 2017 C/RHP Trever Morales (Cache HS – Cache, OK) at 2.10. Streck is a physical presence at 6-foot-3 and 220 pounds, and showed some opposite field power to go with his catch and throw skills.

Just behind Brendan Ezell in raw power, but at the top of the heap in fastball velocity, was 2016 LHP/OF Braidyn Fink (Westmoore HS – Oklahoma City, OK). Fink has an impressive set of tools as a two-way player, such that a case could made for his future as either a pitcher or a position player. He threw his fastball at 86-87 mph, and showed feel for a mid-to-upper 70s change with some sinking action. He did not throw a breaking ball, which is pretty much the only negative to find on the mound.

As a position player, it’s also hard to find a glaring weakness. He isn’t a likely candidate to play center field, but appears to be a good fit at either corner spot. He posted a respectable 7.10 in the 60 yard dash, and showed better arm strength than fielding ability. Similarly, his raw power marks were ahead of those for hitting ability. He can make the ball do things from his hand and off the bat, which isn’t surprising considering his thick and strong build at 5-foot-11 and 200 pounds.

Easily the most physical player of the day was James Tanner Long (Blanchard HS – Blanchard, OK), a 2016 RHP listed at 6-foot-7 and 215 pounds. He reached 89 mph at the raw velocity station, and later topped at 83 mph with his fastball — based on that evidence, there is more fastball velocity in the tank. He was able to spin his mid 60s breaking ball well, such that he created some depth to downward break – offering further evidence of future fastball velocity. His change was a mid-to-upper 60s offering, and appears to be his third pitch at present.

2018 SS Brett Owen

2018 SS Brett Owen

A trio of underclassmen middle infielders showed well-rounded tool sets with promise for the future. 2017 grads Perfecto Tyler Garcia (Altus HS – Altus, OK) and Brett Owen (Blanchard HS – Blanchard, OK) both proved to be slick fielders during the defensive workout. Owen was the better runner at 7.13 in the 60 yard dash, while Garcia showed more arm strength with 82 mph raw velocity. 2018 Kody Powell (Durant HS – Durant, OK) showed slightly better with the bat than the glove, but still has the makings of at least four future tools — he isn’t physical enough for power just yet.

In terms of offensive-minded underclassmen, 2017 1B Caden Stephens (Blanchard HS – Blanchard, OK) made an aggressive move through the zone, and has a chance for left-handed power, while 2017 C Jake Womack (Chickasha HS – Chickasha, OK) has a more advanced hit tool along with the ability to drive the ball from gap to gap.
