Kapolei, HI Under Armour Baseball Factory National Tryout Recap
The first of our two annual visits to the Aloha State usually comes in January. The PGA Tour and Champions Tour both open their seasons on the islands shortly after the New Year, making it an exciting time to visit. Of course, if there’s a place where it’s always an exciting time to visit, it would be Hawaii for many of us.
On Sunday, January 25 the Under Armour Baseball Factory National Tryout tour made a stop on the southwest corner of the island of Oahu, at Kapolei High School.
A pair of outfielders stood out with very well-rounded abilities. 2016 OF Matthew Yokota posted 6.95 in the 60 yard dash, touched 85 mph at the raw velocity station, swung the bat with a combination of hitting ability and raw power, and featured quick feet with body control in the outfield.
2017 OF/SS Jesse Awa worked out very well in the outfield and at shortstop, such that it’s very hard to determine his best position. A left-handed hitter, he too showed a combination of hitting ability and raw power during batting practice. Since we first saw him last January, he’s made huge strides with all five tools. A year ago, he posted 7.78 in the 60 yard dash and 73 mph raw velocity. One year later, his numbers of 7.10 and 81 mark huge gains in these areas. His gains in fielding ability, hitting ability and raw power were similarly impressive.
Middle infielders Lawrence Keali’l Carvalho and Dylan Pagente showed advanced defensive skills during their workouts. Carvalho featured a little more arm strength (82 raw velocity), while Pagente ran a little better (7.02 60 yard dash). Both right-handed hitters with short compact strokes, they’re also only 2017 graduates.
