Six Baseball Factory Alumni Among MLB’s Defensive Whizzes
The baseball offseason kicked off on Monday with the announcement of the Rawlings Gold Glove Award winners. Among the eighteen winners were six alumni of the Baseball Factory. The Gold Glove, which is given to the best player defensively at their position in each league, is the second highest defensive honor that a player can receive.
Eric Hosmer, of the World Champion Kansas City Royals, won his third straight Gold Glove at first base, committing only eight errors all season while posting a stellar .994 fielding percentage.
Nolan Arenado, the third basemen for the Colorado Rockies, won his third straight Gold Glove; making just 17 errors while producing a highlight reel play seemingly every night.
Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher and Cy Young Award candidate Zach Greinke won his second consecutive Gold Glove. He only had two errors, bringing his career total to a paltry seven, all while having one of the best seasons in baseball history on the bump.
Joining these three established Baseball Factory Alumni for the first time as Gold Glovers are Brandon Crawford, A.J. Pollock and Kevin Kiermaier.
Crawford, the shortstop for the San Francisco Giants, made 13 errors in 631 chances, good for a fielding percentage of .979; while producing the second most defensive wins above replacement amongst shortstops in all of baseball.
Pollock, the center fielder for the Arizona Diamondbacks, got his first nod on the Gold Glove award after committing 5 errors on the season, good for fifth among qualified center fielders. His breakout campaign also saw him post a fielding percentage of .992 while hitting .315 on the year.
Kiermaier, the centerfielder for the Tampa Bay Rays, was far and away the best defender is baseball in 2015, posting a defensive wins above replacement of a whopping 5.0. With only five errors on the year, his fielding percentage was a solid .988 and he established himself as a defensive force for years to come.
For many of these players, the Gold Glove is just the tip of the iceberg for awards, as they have also been nominated for the Silver Slugger, Wilson Defensive Player of the Year and Cy Young. Congratulations to all of these Baseball Factory Alumni!
