After Surgery, Prince Fielder Arrives at Camp Aiming to Stay Healthy
For a player who averaged 36 home runs per season from 2007-to-2013, things looked bright for fans of the Texas Rangers gaining a middle-of-the-order hitter like Prince Fielder.
Those hopes were put on hold when Fielder suffered a herniated disk in his neck that caused weakness in his left side last season. Baseball was secondary, way of living became his primary concern.
After corrective surgery for the injury, the former Baseball Factory alumnus arrived to Rangers Spring Training camp on Monday and all reports suggest he is healthy coming off the injury that limited him to just 42 games in 2014. It was quite the change for Fielder missing extensive time after playing in 547 consecutive games.
Timing for Prince is the most important step right now, in the batters box and on the field. He’s come to camp slimmed down with the goal of remaining healthy at 30 years-old, as opposed to just putting up big numbers.
He’ll face live pitching for the first time in nearly 10 months and isn’t concerned about losing much with his swing, telling MLB.com, “It’s fine, you don’t lose your swing. You don’t forget how to play. I just want to square up a few balls. You do that one time and things will start feeling good.”
