TONY CAMPANA – Featured Baseball Factory Alumnus

This week’s featured player is Tony Campana, freshman center fielder for UNC-Asheville. Tony graduated from Springboro high school (Springboro, OH) in 2004.

As of May 15, Tony started 46 of the 48 games the Bulldogs have played this season. He has settled into his role of leading off and playing center field very well in just his first season at the college level. His line:

.316 batting average (2nd among regular players)
60 hits (tied for team lead)
13 walks (3rd on team)
.366 on-base percentage (2nd among regular players)
13 stolen bases in 21 attempts (tied for team lead)
34 runs scored (team leading)
4 doubles
2 triples (2nd on team)

Tony singled in his first college at bat, which came on the road against the University of Alabama. He ended up with 2 singles, 1 stolen base and 2 runs in his first college game.

Baseball Factory first saw Tony in July 2003, when he came to a B.A.T.S. event in Columbus, OH. Soon after that he enrolled in Baseball Factory’s Exclusive College Recruiting Program.

Campana worked with Buddy Custer, his Personal Recruiting Director, to build his college list. The two then worked together to evaluate each school on the list in great detail to determine Tony’s best fit. He chose UNC-Asheville over Capital University, Findlay University, Ohio Wesleyan University, Marietta College, and Catonsville Community College.

Campana showed the abilities of a leadoff type hitter when we saw him as a high school player. He hit from the left side and could really get his 5-9, 155 pound frame moving. He ran the 60-yard dash between 6.69 and 6.79 seconds, and was as good as 4.20 from home to first base.

He showed very good bat control, and a hitting approach that would be well suited to play “small ball”. His 6 sacrifice bunts, 45 singles and 13 walks this season for UNC-Asheville are evidence that he has maintained that approach at the college level.

Along with Campana, UNC-Asheville’s 2004 recruiting class included two other Baseball Factory alumni.

Chad Gregson is an infielder / outfielder from Canyon high school in New Braunfels, TX. He is a former Baseball Factory All American, and was also enrolled in the Exclusive program. For us his athleticism and speed (6.96 60-yard dash) allowed him to play both infield and outfield. His offensive potential was going to be his ticket all along, he featured a good left handed stroke with bat speed. He is listed at 6-0, 185 pounds.

Johnny Martinez is a left handed hitting catcher from Jesuit College high school in Dallas, TX. We saw him at our Forth Worth, TX B.A.T.S event in May 2003 (where we also saw RHP Josh Wilson, who signed with the University of Texas). Martinez put on an impressive display of power in batting practice, he consistently drove the ball into the gaps and out of the park. He also showed a strong arm and the ability to catch and throw from behind the plate, with release times as good as 1.93 seconds. He is listed at 6-0, 180 pounds.

Although Campana is off to the fastest start, all three players have seen a good bit of playing time as freshman – Gregson is batting .323 in 31 at bats, Martinez is hitting .234 with a home run in 47 at bats. Baseball Factory wishes all three players continued success in their college careers.
