Top Fastball Velocity: Four 2017 Arms Reach 88 mph, Including Two D-I Commits

It was a good weekend for 2017 arms, as we saw at least one pitcher reach 88 mph at each of the three Under Armour Baseball Factory National Tryout events on February 21. Four total reached into the upper 80s — two-left handers and two-right handers — and each added at least one quality secondary offering.

At the Monticello, IA tryout, RHP Evan Reifert (Wilton, IA) touched 91 mph to join a group tied for second in the class of 2017. He showed feel for a sharp upper 70s breaking ball and flashed a promising low 80s changeup. At 6-foot-2 and 180 pounds he has an ideal frame, and he offered evidence of an ability to throw strikes with at least two pitches.

Also in Monticello, we saw an impressive three-pitch mix from Arizona State commit Brendan Murphy (Mundelein, IL). The 6-foot-4 left-hander ran his fastball up to 88, spun a tight mid 70s curveball and showed advanced feel for an upper 70s changeup. Murphy is good athlete with bat speed and strength for 93 mph exit velocity, giving him the makings of two-way potential to fit a 1B or corner OF profile.

In September 2015 at the Under Armour Futures West Showcase, UCLA commit LHP Chris Daniels topped at 86 mph and spun what was then among the best breaking balls we’d seen from the 2017 class.

Fast-forward five months to the February 21 Under Armour Baseball Factory National Tryout in Stockton, CA, and Daniels’ breaking ball still stands as among the best in the 2017 class. His fastball jumped up two ticks to 88 mph on the top end, and he showed feel for a low to mid 70s changeup we didn’t see much of in his previous outing. I still think there is a bigger velo jump ahead of him, his is the kind of arm stroke you bet on and he’s reportedly working hard to get stronger.

At the Xenia, OH tryout, 2017 RHP Connor McMurry topped at 86 mph from the windup, but was able to reach 89 mph from stretch where his arm worked in better sequence with his lower half. His breaking ball was a hard downer at 68-71 mph, while his change appeared to be somewhat of a work in progress in the low 70s. He clearly has arm strength to work with, and has seems to have the potential for improved stuff as the coordination between his delivery and arm stroke improves.
