Two Baseball Factory Alums Part of MLB’s Top 10 Prospects To Watch in the AFL
The 25th season of the Arizona Fall League kicks off on October 11th as full rosters for the six teams have been announced. Players from all 30 major league teams are assembled onto six rosters with two divisions.
In addition to league play, the 11th annual Fall Stars Game will be played on November 5th at Surprise Stadium (home of the Surprise Saguaros) and the AFL Championship will be November 19th at Scottsdale Stadium (home of the Scottsdale Scorpions).
Last season, the Scottsdale Scorpions secured the championship, defeating the Surprise Saguaros, 6-4, their first championship since 2010.
Former Baseball Factory standouts like Eric Hosmer, Josh Donaldson, Francisco Lindor, Kris Bryant, Bryce Harper, Addison Russell and Nolan Arenado have all participated in previous seasons, indicating their future potential as All-Stars, league MVP’s and World Champions.
Over the course of the next few weeks, we’ll break down each Arizona Fall League team’s rosters to highlight our former Factory standouts as players with potential major league stardom.
Today’s article discusses MLB.com’s list of 10 can’t-miss prospects to watch for the upcoming season and two Baseball Factory alums are part of the list.
Brent Honeywell – Tampa Bay Rays (AFL Team: Peoria Javelinas)
Baseball Factory Events: Under Armour Baseball Factory National Tryout – Kennesaw, GA (June 2011), 2013 Under Armour All-America Pre-Season Tournament
At just 21 years old, Honeywell is quickly ascending the Rays’ organizational ladder, moving all the way to Double-A in early July and performing quite well for the Montgomery Biscuits.
The Rays have a penchant for drafting outstanding pitchers and Honeywell is no different. After being selected in the 2nd round of the ’14 Draft (72nd overall) as a rather under-the-radar selection out of Walters State Community College, the Rays have been rewarded with a pitcher who has won 18 games, struck out 286 batters and has held opponents to a .217 batting mark in nearly three full minor league seasons.
Scouts noted Honeywell’s easy, repeatable delivery and a fastball that touched upper 80’s during the 2013 All-America Pre-Season Tournament and its something he hangs his hat on as a prospect to watch this Fall in the Arizona Fall League.
This season, Honeywell finished 7-3 with a 2.34 ERA between High-A Charlotte and Montgomery, where he pitched to a 2.28 mark in 10 starts, which would have been tops in the league with more innings pitched. He fanned 117 hitters in a combined 115 1/3 innings, holding a .221 mark against hitters.
Michael Kopech – Boston Red Sox (AFL Team: Surprise Saguaros)
Baseball Factory Events: Under Armour Baseball Factory National Tryout – Carrollton, TX (July 2012), 2013 Under Armour All-America Game
Boston drafted the hard-throwing right-hander in the first round (33rd overall) in 2014 out of Mount Pleasant HS in Mount Pleasant, TX and his career is back on the appropriate trajectory as he looks to make a huge impact this Fall as one of Boston’s top pitching prospects. Kopech features a fastball that has turned heads and lit up the radar guns this summer. On July 13th, while pitching for High-A Salem, he reportedly threw a fastball that was clocked at 105 miles per hour, drawing nationwide attention.
He’s been downright dominant for Salem in 11 starts this season after returning from an injury to go 4-1 with a 2.25 ERA and 82 strikeouts in just 52.0 innings pitched. Hitters are just .147 off of the Red Sox No. 5 prospect this season.
During the 2013 All-America Game, Kopech struck out the side in his inning of work and topped out his fastball at 93 mph, pairing that pitch with an upper 70s slider, working quickly and attacking the strike zone.
