Under Armour Baseball Factory National Tryout Spotlight – Fresno, California

The Under Armour Baseball Factory National Tryout Tour rolls into Fresno, California to Clovis North High School on Sunday, September 13th.

Today we take a closer look at three former Baseball Factory athletes, two of which who stayed in-state to play baseball collegiately, and one who was drafted by a major league team and having success in the minor leagues.

Marcus Wilson

Marcus Wilson

Marcus Wilson – Wilson, who recently turned 19 earlier this month, is from Los Angeles and a 2014 graduate from Junipero Serra High School in Gardena, California.

It was a whirlwind summer for Wilson in 2013 as the right-handed hitting outfielder first attended an Under Armour Baseball Factory National Tryout in Santa Barbara in June to being named an Under Armour All-American in August. In between, Wilson participated in an Under Armour Team One West Showcase (July) and later in the month with an Under Armour Southwest Championship appearance.

At the Team One West event, Wilson showed excellent footspeed, running a 6.69 60-yard time. Excelling defensively, Wilson showed accurate routes to the baseball and displayed pro arm strength. In the All-America Game, he accounted for most of the offense that day for the American Team, getting on-base twice in four plate appearances, scoring two runs and driving in another and stealing two bases. Defensively, he played both left and center field.

Wilson committed to Arizona State University but was drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the second round of the 2014 Draft where he has moved up the organizational ladder, playing rookie ball for Arizona. After spending 2014 with the Arizona League Diamondbacks, he is with the Missoula Osprey of the Pioneer League. Wilson is hitting .256 with 12 doubles, a triple, home run, 22 RBI and 42 runs scored in 56 games this season.

Daulton Jefferies – Jefferies attended a National Tryout in Fresno back in November of 2009 and is a 2013 graduate from Buhach Colony High School in Atwater, California. He had a dynamite high school career, being named the 2013 Central California Conference Player of the Year and twice the league MVP as a pitcher and shortstop.

As a senior, Jefferies posted 143 strikeouts which set a school record and was third-best in the state. After graduation, Jefferies next step was the University of California, playing for head coach David Esquer and the Cal Bears.

Jefferies posted a 3.45 ERA as a freshman, throwing a team-high 92 2/3 innings as a starter. His best performance of the season was a complete-game victory against USC in May 2014. He took a step further this season as a sophomore, being named as an All Pac-12 First-Team selection after posting a 6-5 record and a 2.92 ERA in 80 innings pitched. He ranked seventh in the Pac-12 in strikeouts with 74.

Jefferies also pitched for the USA Baseball’s Collegiate National Team this summer.

Niko Pacheco

Niko Pacheco

Niko Pacheco – Hailing from Fresno, Pacheco attended Bullard High School and graduated in 2013.

A special two-sport athlete, Pacheco was named Fresno Bee honorable mention and First-Team County Metro Athletic Conference following his senior season after batting .345 with 13 RBI. He was a three-year starting quarterback for the Knights and a two-year starter behind the plate as well. His junior year of high school, he paced the Knights in batting average (.364), doubles (16), RBI (37), total bases (58) and slugging percentage (.542).

Pacheco attended a National Tryout in Costa Mesa in April 2010 and Fresno in November 2010. He participated in the USA Baseball 16U Championships in June 2010 and was then named to back-to-back Under Armour Pre-Season All-America Tournaments in 2011 and 2012. Between his appearance in ’11 and the tournament in ’12, Niko improved his pop times, ranging from 1.94-to-2.16. Offensively, he had a balanced swing, athletic setup and quick hands that helped him hit the ball to all fields.

Committing to Cal State Fullerton, Pacheco appeared in 11 games, starting two as a freshman for the Titans and recorded his first career hit against Fresno State and first career RBI against Hawaii. This season as a sophomore, played in one game before missing the remainder of the season with an injury.
