Underclassmen Patch Dooley & Matthew Hogan Standout on Long Island

The Under Armour Baseball Factory National Tryout Tour rolled through the New York metropolitan area, with a Sunday March 22 stop on Long Island at Suffolk Community College in Brentwood.

Though they are only underclassmen, Half Hollow Hills East HS teammates Patch Dooley (sophomore) and Matthew Hogan (freshman) stood out as the top players in attendance.

2017 RHP Patch Dooley (Deer Park, NY) has a slender build without much fill at 6-foot and 150 pounds. His fastball had late arm side life at 85-87 mph, and paired nicely with his upper 60s downer breaking ball. His upper 70s change appeared to be a work in progress, though it was thrown with a loose wrist and fastball arm speed — giving it a chance to develop over time as he gains better feel for it.

2018 OF/RHP Matthew Hogan (Melville, NY) is a well-rounded and highly capable two-way player. He was the best runner of the day, with a 60 yard dash of 7.01, and also posted the highest bat exit velocity with a mark of 91 mph.

under-armour-baseball-factory-national-tryoutsA left-handed hitter, Hogan combined bat speed with a coordinated and full move out front for hard contact. His ability to impact the ball is well-advanced for his age, especially when his 5-foot-11 and 175 pound frame is considered. He’s got some things to clean up, but he has a lot of natural ability to work with — and he’s just a freshman.

He isn’t as far along on the mound, but all of his pitches were firm — in fact, he didn’t throw a single pitch below 76 mph. His fastball was 82-84 with arm side run, while his breaking ball had sweeping short break between 76 and 79 mph, and his change was 80-81 mph.

Right behind Hogan at 7.02 in the 60 yard dash was 2016 OF Justin Stromski (Eastport South Manor HS – Manorville, NY). Stromski stands at 6-foot-3 and 170 pounds, and posted 82 mph raw velocity. He showed the makings of a strong right-handed stroke, and made hard contact through his round of batting practice.

Other top run times were turned in by a pair of 2017 graduates. 2B/SS Kenneth Gordon (Babylon HS – Babylon, NY) posted 7.12, with OF Richard Marooney (Garden City HS – Garden City, NY) just off his bumper at 7.13.

The top raw velocity was 85 mph, recorded by 2015 SS Kevin Troncoso (The Urban Assembly School for Careers in Sports – Bronx, NY). At 5-foot-11 and 170 pounds, he has some strength in his upper body along with a well-rounded set of tools — highlighted by smooth defensive actions at shortstop. Just behind Troncoso was 2016 left-handed hitting OF Jason Salva (North Rockland HS – West Haverstraw, NY), who posted 83 mph in both raw velocity and bat exit velocity.

Rounding out the top bat exit velocity was 2015 left-handed hitting OF Anthony Vieto (Manhasset HS – Whitestone, NY) at 87 mph. Vieto ranked among the best at the event in grip strength, with a measure of 136 psi in his right hand. After a quick move to the ball, he was able to channel that strength to produce hard contact.

2018 C Luis Cordones (Riverside HS – Yonkers, NY) turned in the top pop time, with a 2.10. His throws were accurate, while his receiving and blocking were both solid — completing a well-rounded set of defensive skills. He’s got offensive potential as well, mainly thanks to a quick move to the ball and some speed through contact.
