Vanderbilt Looks To Repeat As Champs In CWS Finals Against Virginia
The 2015 Men’s College World Series has come down to the final two teams in the College World Series Championship, a repeat of last year’s championship matchup.
The Vanderbilt Commodores, winners of last year’s championship will face off against the Virginia Cavaliers for the second straight year to determine the Division I champion. This is the first re-match in the Finals since the 2006-07 season when Oregon State repeated as champs, defeating the North Carolina Tarheels. Vandy is also looking to become back-to-back champions for the first time in five years since the South Carolina Gamecocks accomplished that feat in 2010 and 2011.
Both teams have had outstanding hitting and pitching performances and team numbers combined are very similar heading into what should be an exciting re-match.
In three games during the College World Series so far, Vanderbilt pitchers have thrown to an ERA of just 1.33, allowing only four earned runs, striking out 29 batters and limiting opponents to a .163 batting average.
Virginia has played one more game than Vandy, winning three-of-four to get back to the championship, holding opponents to a batting average of .227 and an ERA of 3.86. The Cavaliers hold the edge on the offensive side, hitting .262 as a team to Vanderbilt’s .234 average. The Commodores threat for the extra-base hit will come into play in this series, as they have hit more doubles (6-to-4) than Virginia and have out-homered them (3-to-2).
Vanderbilt’s John Kilichowski, an Under Armour Baseball Factory Premium Video Program participant in 2010 and a Team One Futures East participant in 2011, pitched 2 1/3 innings of scoreless baseball in the Commodores series-clinching 7-1 victory over TCU last Friday night. Kilichowski allowed one hit and struck out two, lowering his season ERA to 2.76.
Virginia Cavalier starting pitcher and former Baseball Factory alum, Brandon Waddell started the decider on Saturday night, his 52nd career start, becoming Virginia’s all-time leader in most starts made. Coming into the game not having allowed an earned run during the postseason, Waddell gutted through five innings, allowing four earned runs, walking three and striking out three.
Waddell participated in a Premium Video Program and the Under Armour Southwest Regional Tournament in 2011.
The first game of the three-game, winner-take-all series begins tonight at 8:00 P.M. EST on ESPN.
