Where Are They Now? 2013 Baseball Factory MLB Draft Selections

The 2015 MLB First-Year Player Draft kicks off in less than two weeks and many of Baseball Factory’s top athletes are in the mix to have their names called during the three-day event.

We take a look back at Baseball Factory alumnus who made an impact as Under Armour All-Americans, Under Armour Pre-Season All-Americans and Under Armour Baseball Factory Team One Futures participants in today’s edition of “Where Are They Now?”. All five players are 2013 MLB Draft selectees and all have made steady contributions for the teams that selected them.

Here are today’s 2013 MLB Draftees and how they are performing during their professional careers so far.

Austin Meadows (1st Round – 9th overall – Pittsburgh Pirates)

Meadows, a power-hitting outfielder from Atlanta, Georgia was a big time pick for the Pirates in the 2013 MLB Draft and the 20-year old has made a slow climb through Pittsburgh’s minor league system.

The biggest thing is preaching patience with Meadows – who is viewed as a corner outfielder – has played in centerfield since beginning his professional career as an 18-year old with the Rookie League Pittsburgh Pirates team. After being advanced to Single-A West Virginia last season, injuries cost him much of the year, limiting him to only 38 games after suffering a hamstring injury in Spring Training. However, in those 38 games, Meadows hit .322 and showed the power that the Pirates envision him putting up in the majors, with 13 doubles, a triple and three home runs.

This season, he’s healthy and playing at High-A Bradenton, hitting .319 with 29 runs scored, seven doubles, two doubles, two triples, two homers and 18 RBI.

Kris Bryant (1st Round – 2nd overall – Chicago Cubs)

Bryant made his major league debut for the Cubs on April 17th and since then, has continued the hitting that made him the hottest story in Spring Training.

After belting nine home runs in 14 games this spring training, Bryant became a star overnight but the Cubs sent him down for the first few weeks of April before bringing him up to play his first ever major league game at Wrigley Field against the San Diego Padres.

Bryant hit his first major league home run on May 9th in Milwaukee against the Brewers and then in back-to-back games for his first Wrigley Field home runs on May 11th and 12th against the New York Mets.

So far this season, the former Under Armour Pre-Season All-American is hitting .281 with five doubles, a triple, seven home runs and a team-leading 31 RBI, playing in only 36 games. Bryant has also shown a patient eye at the dish, collecting 24 walks.

Billy McKinney (1st Round – 24th overall – Oakland Athletics)

McKinney, a former 2013 Draft selection of the Oakland Athletics, came to the Chicago Cubs via the blockbuster Jeff Samardzija trade that netted the Cubs two future pieces, including short stop Addison Russell (2010 Under Armour All-American) who has made a splash with the big-league ballclub already. McKinney isn’t too far behind.

McKinney started the 2015 season with High-A Myrtle Beach, hitting .340 with 11 extra-base hits, 25 RBI and 17 walks. The 20-year old was recently promoted to Double-A Tennessee after dominating his last level and has continued to hit for average (.282) with four doubles in 12 games.

He’s played both left and right field for Tennessee and will continue to do so with a crowded outfield, but McKinney has the range, speed, athleticism and arm to play centerfield one day for the Cubs, in addition to possibly being an ideal leadoff hitter as he has shown a good eye at the plate (101 walks in 222 career minor league games).

Clint Frazier (1st Round – 5th overall – Cleveland Indians)

Frazier, a 2012 Under Armour All-American, was the Indians top selection two years ago and after playing the entire 2014 season with Single-A Lake County, was bumped to High-A Lynchburg this season.

The 20-year-old put together a solid ’14 season as a then 19-year-old, hitting .266 and displaying good pop, being able to drive the ball to the gaps or out of the park. He hit 18 doubles, six triples and 13 home runs while driving in 50, playing in 120 games, mainly in centerfield. He also showed the threat of speed, swiping 12 bags and defensively, showing solid range.

This season against advanced pitching, has continued his hitting ways with 11 doubles, four homers and 24 RBI in 44 games for the Hillcats.

RyderJonesRyder Jones (2nd Round – San Francisco Giants)

Ryder participated in the Under Armour Baseball Factory Team One Futures West event back in 2011 and was drafted in the second round by the Giants in ’13, playing some second base, shortstop and mainly third base.

Jones received a promotion to High-A San Jose this season and is off to a fantastic start, hitting .289 with nine doubles, three homers and 24 RBI, both of those categories leads the team.
