Where Are They Now? 2014 Baseball Factory MLB Draft Selections

The 2015 MLB First-Year Player Draft begins Monday, June 8 and many of Baseball Factory’s top athletes are in the mix to have their names called during the three-day event.

We are proud to present our annual coverage of the Draft, providing in-depth analysis from Steve Bernhardt, Chairman of the Under Armour Selection Committee and Vice President of Baseball Operations for Baseball Factory. The scouting perspective gives a unique look at the nation’s finest players in such top-tool categories as Pure Hitters, Power and Most Athletic, in addition to player features and fun insights to our alumni as they prepare for their big day.

Today, we take a look back at some Baseball Factory alumni that had their names called during the 2014 MLB Draft and how they are performing during their professional careers so far.

Nick Gordon (1st Round – 5th overall – Minnesota Twins)

Gordon, a 2013 Under Armour All-American, has shown the skills to be an extremely skilled shortstop both offensively and defensively. In the field, Nick is an instinctual defender who shows quick feet, soft hands and a plus arm. He hits from the left-side of the plate and had a solid beginning to his professional career as an 18-year-old with the Rookie-League Elizabethton Twins in 2014, hitting .294 with six doubles, four triples and 46 runs scored in 57 games.

As a 19-year-old this season, Gordon was bumped up to Single-A Cedar Rapids to face the next step in his career and has performed well so far, utilizing his speed when on-base with seven stolen bases, two doubles, two triples and 23 runs scored in 35 games.

The younger Gordon is the brother of major league outfielder, Dee Gordon and the son of former major league reliever, Tom “Flash” Gordon and is well on his way to making his own path to the majors.

Grant Holmes (1st Round – 22nd overall – Los Angeles Dodgers)

Holmes, too, was a 2013 Under Armour All-American and has not disappointed after being selected by the Dodgers, pitching for Single-A Great Lakes this season. Holmes has made seven starts and is off to a 2-0 start with a 3.58 ERA and has shown a solid strikeout rate, with 40 strikeouts in 32 2/3 innings pitched this season.

He has a power fastball that sits mid 90’s and has very good control and repeatable delivery displaying great arm strength and speed, perhaps the best in the Dodgers minor league system. Holmes also throws a curveball and a change-up that he is still developing.

Aaron Nola (1st Round – 7th overall – Philadelphia Phillies)

Nola participated in the Under Armour Baseball Factory National Tryout in Shreveport, Louisiana in 2008 and New Orleans in 2010. He then went onto dominate in college at LSU, winning SEC Pitcher of the Year awards in 2013 and 2014 and finishing third on LSU’s all-time strikeout list with 345 and fourth in LSU’s career ERA list at 2.09.

Drafted by the Phillies, he hasn’t slowed down and continues his torrid pace up the organization ladder, beginning 2015 with Double-A Reading, the team that he finished the 2014 season with. Nola has started seven games, going 5-2 with a 1.77 ERA with 32 strikeouts in 45 2/3 innings pitched.

Jacob Lindgren (2nd Round – New York Yankees)

Lindgren first started with Baseball Factory by participating in a National Tryout in Metairie, LA in 2009 and was a Under Armour Pre-Season All-American in 2010. He was a second round selection last year by the Yankees out of Mississippi State University, finishing his college career as a 2014 All-American and a 2014 All-SEC First Team selection after he struck out 100 batters as a reliever.

He’s been a reliever in the Yankees organization, jumping four levels quickly last season, pitching in a combined 19 games to a 2.19 ERA with 48 strikeouts in 24 2/3 innings pitched. This season, he begins at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre as a 22-year-old and the strikeouts continue to pile up. In 14 games, he has 27 strikeouts in 20 2/3 innings pitched, showing his power fastball and assortment of off-speed pitches that have the organization thinking highly of Lindgren.
