2009 UNDER ARMOUR PRE-SEASON ALL-AMERICA TOURNAMENT TOP 5 PROSPECTS – 2011 GRADUATES

Below is the list of the Top 5 2011 graduates based on their performance at the event. Players are listed alphabetically.

Tyler Barlow – C, 5-10/165, R/R, 2011, Westview Secondary – Maple Ridge, British Columbia, Canada
Barlow is a young catcher that plays the game smart and hard. While he doesn’t have one stand-out tool, he does everything well and with energy. His average sized frame will need to add strength to catch full seasons at the next level, but he receives with soft hands, blocks well to both sides, and gets the ball to 2B in the 2.00 range. At the plate, he sprays line drives to all fields with a quiet, confident approach. He is one of the few young players to play well above his tools in games where he shows his feel for the game and high baseball IQ. As he adds strength, he will be a player to watch.

Conner Joe – SS/2B, 5-11/175, R/R, 2011, Poway HS – Poway, CA
Joe is a fundamentally sound middle infielder with a bright future. His soft hands defensively work well on routine balls and allow him to make the backhand play better than most young players. His arm is accurate, though he will need to add some arm strength to stay on the left side of the diamond at higher levels. His approach and rhythm at the plate are very advanced. He has a quick, direct path to the ball and uses the whole field well. He is still maturing physically, but already the ball comes off the bat hard and he shows the ability to drive balls to all parts of the park. He will get quicker and stronger over the next two years and should become a major college recruit over that time.

Hunter Lockwood – C, 5-11/185, R/R, 2011, L.D. Bell HS – Bedford, TX
Lockwood is a 2011 grad with a strong, sturdy frame that fits perfectly behind the plate. He has an aggressive approach at the plate with bat speed and flashes of power. His balance and eye/hand coordination allow him to center balls on a consistent basis. He blocks well and shows arm strength behind the plate. He hovers in the 2.0 range to 2B at this time, but some refinements to his footwork and exchange will improve that. As an offensive catcher who is a leader on the field, Lockwood has a very bright future.

Chad Nack – RHP/C, 5-11/180, R/R, 2011, Argyle Liberty Christian HS – Sanger, TX
Nack showed as a two-way talent, and did so at among the toughest position combination over a two day event – pitcher/catcher. After running 7.13 in the 60-yard dash, he showed a strong arm behind the plate with release times mostly around 2.05-2.09. He was agile to block and showed great range, and his receiving skills were solid as well. At the plate, he showed quick hands and a good short to long swing and a solid overall line drive/contact type approach. On the mound, he showed excellent control of a quality three pitch mix. He commanded his 82-84 fastball both in and out, while his 69-72 breaking ball showed out pitch quality when he threw it aggressively. He showed good feel for his 73 change, which had some sink action.

Jared Ruxer – RHP, 6-2/160, R/R, 2011, Lawrence Central HS – Indianapolis, IN
Ruxer is a young right hander with a loose arm and an easy delivery. He showed a tight curve with downward action at 64, the makings of a future excellent slider at 74, and a fastball between 84 and 87. While he showed good feel for and command of his breaking balls, fastball command showed up as an area for improvement. His mound presence and poise were impressive for a young pitcher – he confidently attacked the zone with three quality pitches.
