Baseball Factory Alumni Performing Well in First Pro Action: Rounds 6-10

With the MLB First Year Player Draft almost two months in the rearview, players who were once high school and college phenoms are now professional baseball players. In rounds 6-10, 47 Baseball Factory alumni were chosen.

Let’s take a look at some of the players who have gotten off to promising starts of their young pro careers.

Willie Abreu: Colorado Rockies (6th round, 170 overall), RF

In 26 games this season with Short-Season-A Boise, 21-year-old right fielder Willie Abreu has 21 RBI, four doubles and four home runs. The former University of Miami slugger owns a .253/.345/.434 slash line with the Colorado Rockies Low-A affiliate.

Baseball Factory coaches first saw Abreu at a 2011 College PREP in Boca Raton, Florida. Abreu then played in the 2011 Team One South and Team One Futures East. In 2012, Abreu participated in the Team One Florida Showcase.

Mack Lemieux: Arizona Diamondbacks (6th round, 179 overall), LHP

After pitching well for Arizona’s rookie ball team, left-handed pitcher Mack Lemieux was called up to Short-Season-A Hillsboro. Before being called up, the 19-year-old owned a 1.42 ERA and .87 WHIP while striking out 17 batters in 12.2 innings.

Baseball Factory coaches first saw Lemieux at the 2012 Under Armour Memorial Classic. Lemieux also attended the 2012 Under Armour Firecracker Classic, 2012 and 2013 Under Armour Southeast Championships, 2012 and 2013 Under Armour Fall Classic, the 2013 and 2014 Under Armour Memorial Day Classic and a 2014 College PREP in Jupiter, Florida.

Jordan Watson: Arizona Diamondbacks (7th round, 209 overall), LHP

After striking out three batters in his first inning of pro ball with Arizona’s rookie league team, left-handed pitcher Jordan Watson was promoted to Short-Season-A Hillsboro. The 22-year-old Watson owns a 3.09 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and a 15.4 SO/9 with Hillsboro this season. On the year, Watson has struck out 23 batters in 12.2 innings pitched.

J.D. Busfield: Tampa Bay Rays (7th round, 210 overall), RHP

J.D. Busfield has pitched well this season with the Short-Season-A affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays, Hudson Valley. The right-handed pitcher is 3-1 with a 2.45 ERA in 18.1 innings pitched. So far this season, Busfield has showed why he is a projectable prospect, as the righty stands at 6-foot-7.

Jake Noll: Washington Nationals (7th round, 214 overall), 2B

Jake Noll has played at three different levels already in his short pro career. Noll started at rookie ball, posting a .794 OPS. The 22-year-old then was moved up to Washington’s Short-Season-A affiliate, Auburn, for 18 games, posting a .318/.343/.424 slash line. Now, Noll is a member of Low-A Hagerstown.

Sam Huff: Texas Rangers (7th round, 219 overall), C

Drafted out of high school, 18-year-old catcher Sam Huff is succeeding at rookie ball for the Texas Rangers. In sixteen games, Huff owns a .306/.453/.490 slash line with 11 RBI, four doubles and 12 walks.

Baseball Factory coaches first saw Huff at the 2014 Under Armour Southwest Championships. Huff then attended a 2015 National Tryout in Mesa, Arizona.

Kenny Rosenberg: Tampa Bay Rays (8th round, 240 overall), LHP

Southpaw Kenny Rosenberg is 1-0 with a 2.08 ERA and a .92 WHIP with Tampa Bay’s rookie ball affiliate. In 13 innings, the 21-year-old has struck out 11 batters, allowing only nine hits and three walks.

Blake Quinn: Philadelphia Phillies (9th round, 257 overall), RHP

With Philadelphia’s Short-Season-A affiliate, Williamsport, Quinn owns a 1.65 ERA and a 12.7 SO/9. In 16.2 innings, the 6-foot-4 righty has punched out 23 batters.

Dalton Sawyer: Oakland Athletics (9th round, 262 overall), LHP

Sawyer is proving why he was worth a ninth round selection in June’s MLB Draft so far in his pro career. The 6-foot-5 southpaw is pitching to a 2.7 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 12.2 SO/9. Sawyer has struck out 18 batters, allowing only six walks and eight hits, in 13.1 innings with Oakland’s Short-Season-A affiliate, Vermont.

Baseball Factory coaches first saw Sawyer at a 2010 National Tryout in Green Isle, Minnesota. Sawyer then attended the Vero Beach Pro Select Training and Competition in 2010.

Jesse Scholtens: San Diego Padres (9th round, 264 overall), RHP

After being drafted out of Wright State by the Padres, 6-foot-4 right-handed pitcher Jesse Scholtens got right to proving himself in the minors. With San Diego’s Short-Season-A affiliate, Tri City, Scholtens posted a 1.4 ERA with 24 strikeouts in 19.1 innings pitched. Scholtens has since been promoted to Low-A Fort Wayne.

Scholtens attended a 2009 National Tryout in Kentfield, California.

Jason Goldstein: Seattle Mariners (9th round, 267 overall), C

Catcher Jason Goldstein started with Seattle’s rookie ball team before being moved up to Short-Season-A affiliate, Everett. The 22-year-old backstop owns a .333/.371/.394 slash for the season, making no errors behind the plate and throwing out 50% of base stealers.

Baseball Factory coaches first saw Goldstein at a 2009 National Tryout in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, before being named an Under Armour Preseason All-America in 2010 and 2011.

Peter Bayer: Tampa Bay Rays (9th round, 270 overall), RHP

Peter Bayer is proving himself with Tampa Bay’s rookie ball team. The 22-year-old owns a 1-o record, 1.2 ERA, .80 WHIP and 13.2 SO/9 in 15 innings. The righty has put away 22 batters on strikes while allowing only one walk.

Bayer attended a 2011 National Tryout in Lakewood (Denver), Colorado, and a 2011 Team One West Showcase.

 

Michael Barash: Los Angeles Angels (9th round, 276 overall), C

So far in his young pro career, 21-year-old backstop Michael Barash is slashing .312/.373/.441 for an impressive .813 OPS. Between LA’s rookie ball team and Low-A team, Barash has hit two home runs, six doubles and 17 RBI in 26 games.

Matt Fiedler: St. Louis Cardinals (9th round, 286 overall), OF

In 29 games for St. Louis’ rookie ball team, outfielder Matt Fiedler has stolen six bases, hit 15 doubles and batted in 14 baserunners. On the season, Fiedler has a .796 OPS.

Samad Taylor: Cleveland Indians (10th round, 302 overall), 2B

With Cleveland’s rookie ball team, Samad Taylor has only made one error (.985 fielding percentage) at second base. The 17-year-old is also slashing .333/.419/.429 for an .847 in his first 18 games of pro baseball.

Taylor attended the Under Armour Southwest Championships in 2013.

Brandon Lopez: Minnesota Twins (10th round, 303 overall), SS

University of Miami standout Brandon Lopez has started his pro career on fire with Minnesota’s rookie ball team. The 22-year-old shortstop is hitting .351 with a .490 on-base percentage. Lopez is walking more than he is striking out (18 to 13) and owns a .922 OPS.
