Additional Standouts From Futures South
While several standouts from the 2018 Georgia class have already been highlighted, there were several other prospects at the Under Armour Baseball Factory Futures South event who were impressive. Some also hail from Georgia, but Alabama was also well represented with a few other states also in the mix. Here are some notes on those talented players:
-
Ryan Bliss – SS – Committed to Auburn
Bliss showed quick twitch actions and an outstanding feel for the game. Ran a 6.75, was smooth at SS with a quick release and showed a loose, athletic RH swing.
- Garrett Brown – RHP – Committed to Georgia
Garrett’s 6’8” frame generated excellent downhill plane to his fastball. He threw three pitches for strikes, lived down in the zone and retired 4-of-the-5 hitters he faced.
- Wesley Diamantis – 1B
A hard hit single in the game and a solid round of batting practice stood out for Wesley. His left-handed stroke is easy and fluid and he has the makings of an excellent hit tool.
- Jarrett Ford – 2B – Committed to Tennessee
Another SEC commit who showed well, Jarrett takes an aggressive hack and makes lots of loud contact – usually to the middle of the field. He also ran a 6.69 and plays with confidence.
- Pierce Gallo – IF
Only a 2019 grad, Pierce fit right in with solid tools across the board. Now a member of Walton’s strong program, Pierce showed the best collection of game at bats going 2-for-3 with a double and hitting the ball hard all three plate appearances.
- Jeremiah Jackson – SS
Jeremiah is a special talent who can impact the game in many ways. The Alabama native proved that once again at this event by going 2-for-3 with a triple, pressuring the defense on the bases, running a 6.72 in the 60 and playing an excellent SS in both workout and game.
- Tanner Jackson – 3B
Also from Alabama, the strong and mature Jackson swung the bat with authority the whole day. He singled hard between shortstop and third in the game and showed plenty of tools in the workout including 88 mph arm strength.
-
Dillon Lifrieri – OF – Committed to South Carolina
Lifrieri has committed to an SEC school and ventured from CT down to GA for this event. He is strong and athletic with impressive tools across the board including 91 arm strength, 93 exit velocity and a 6.75 60. He’s a patient hitter good strike zone discipline as evidenced by his three walks in four plate appearances.
- Alex Marquand – C
Hitting just seems to come easy to Alex. His left-handed stroke is short, simple and repeatable leading to a 1-for-2 day with a walk in game action.
- Ryan Miller – OF
At 6’2”/190 pounds Miller has present strength on a perfect corner outfielder’s body. He showed some athleticism and drove the ball with loft power in BP and flashed it again in the game with a deep fly out to right-center field.
- Leyton Pinckney – C – Committed to Mercer
Fresh off quarterbacking his Veterans HS (Kathleen, GA) to a win the night before, Leyton switched back to baseball seamlessly throwing a 1.92 to 2B, and going 1-for-3 with two hard hit balls in the game.
-
TJ Reeves – OF – Committed to Alabama
Reeves put on one of the best workout displays at the event. During BP he seemed to just flick pitches over the LF wall and into the trees with his strong wrists and hands. Add in that he showed 90 mph arm strength, 90 mph exit velocity off the bat and ran a 6.63 and it adds up to an exciting prospect.
- Anthony Seigler – C – Committed to Auburn
A switch-hitting catcher is always an appealing prospect, but even more so when you throw a 1.86 to 2B and have power from both sides of the plate. Anthony drove balls out of the park both LH and RH during BP making lots of loud contact and showing a potential middle-of-the-order bat at a premium position.
- Calin Smith – OF
Another 2019 grad Smith has the makings of an advanced hit tool with surprising power. His LH stroke shows good feel for the barrel and excellent eye/hand coordination.
- Nick Swanson – RHP
Swanson threw a heavy fastball that had good tailing action from his ¾ slot where he also mixed in a breaking ball and change. He appeared to be a very uncomfortable guy for right-handed hitters to face.
- Carson Taylor – C – Committed to Richmond
The switch-hitting Taylor has a short, efficient swing from both sides of the plate. He has an interesting mix of tools with 88 mph arm strength and 90 mph exit velocity as well as sub 2.0 times to 2B.
-
Charlie Welch – C – Committed to South Carolina
The Florida native, Welch, is a polished all-around player with a high baseball IQ. He showed above average arm strength that helped to flash a 1.86 time to 2B with all of his throws being extremely accurate. Charlie also has a clean RH stroke that shows rhythm and coordination.
- Chase Wilkerson – IF/RHP – Committed to Florida State
Wilkerson can do it all on the field. He ran a 6.74, played with great energy and showed a quick LH stroke. On the mound he touched 88 and flashed a quality change and one of the best breaking balls of the day.
- Christopher Williams – OF/LHP – Committed to Florida International
Another accomplished two-way player, the ball jumps off Christopher’s bat from a smooth, easy left-handed swing. He also has a repeatable delivery on the mound with clean arm action and a solid three-pitch mix.
- Drew Williamson – OF – Committed to Alabama
The former Under Armour Pre-Season All-American continues to get better. At 6’4”/205 he is explosive in all he does as evidenced by his 6.51 in the 60. He also showed his usual fluid LH stroke with lots of BP power and two hard hit singles in the game to go with a walk.
