Baseball Factory Alumni On Baseball America’s Top 10 Prospects List: A.L. Central

Baseball America recently released their Top 10 Prospects list on each team’s highly-rated players and many Baseball Factory alumni find themselves as top prospects heading into the 2015 season.

Each Thursday, we’ll take a look at where our alumni stand according to Baseball America’s rankings, looking back at how they got their Baseball Factory experience started and what they’ve done so far during their professional careers.

Rankings are prioritized by Baseball America and numbered 1 through 10 for each team. This week, we take a look at the Top Prospects from Baseball Factory’s alumni in the American League Central.

Chicago White Sox

SpencerAdams Spencer Adams – RHP (BA’s Rank #3)

Baseball Factory Lineage: Under Armour Baseball Factory Team One Futures Series East 2012

The Skinny: The 2nd round pick (44th overall) of the White Sox played his first season of pro ball in 2014 and the 18-year-old held his own in the Arizona Rookie League. He started nine games last season, going 3-3 with a 3.67 ERA. One positive note was his walk rate, only giving up four free passes in 41 and 2/3 innings.

TreyMichalczewski Trey Michalczewski – 3B (BA’s Rank #8)

Baseball Factory Lineage: Attended an Under Armour Baseball Factory National Tryout & Premium Video Program in Oklahoma City, OK (3/4/12)

The Skinny: The switch-hitting, seventh-round draft selection in the 2013 Draft played 116 games at Low-A Kannapolis, hitting .273, with 25 doubles, 10 home runs and 70 runs batted in. He has good size (6’3, 210) and projects well at third base because of his bat and arm.

He’ll need a few more years of seasoning in the minors, but is on the White Sox radar long-term.

Cleveland Indians

FranciscoLindor
 Francisco Lindor – SS (BA’s Rank #1)

Baseball Factory Lineage: Attended an Under Armour Baseball Factory National Tryout in Bradenton, FL (2/8/09), Under Armour Baseball Factory Team One South 2009

The Skinny: Lindor, the Indians 8th overall pick in the 2011 Draft is looking to build on a successful 2014 season where he played at both Double-A Akron and finishing in Triple-A Columbus. He hit advanced pitching well, finishing the season hitting .276 overall in 126 games with 16 doubles and stealing 28 bases.

It’s his defense that draws rave reviews from fans to scouts, possessing great hands, arm strength and fluid motion to the baseball.

The Indians are being careful with Lindor, wanting to give him some more time in the minors as he’ll start at Columbus to begin 2015, but with his advanced play, it won’t be long before he’s making an impact with the major league club.

ClintFrazier Clint Frazier – OF (BA’s Rank #3)

Baseball Factory Lineage: 2012 Under Armour All-America Game Participant

The Skinny: Frazier, the 5th overall pick in the 2013 Draft, wrapped up his first full season in pro ball at Single-A Lake County in 2014, and put together a solid season in 120 games. He hit .266 with 18 doubles and 13 home runs.

At the Under Armour All-America Game in 2012, he wowed scouts with his bat speed and his defensive prowess. Frazier could start 2015 at Lake County or be moved up to High-A Lynchburg.

 Tyler Naquin – OF (BA’s Rank #6)

Baseball Factory Lineage: Attended an Under Armour Baseball Factory National Tryout in Houston, TX (2/11/07)

The Skinny: Naquin was the Indians 15th overall pick in the 2012 Draft and the organization remains very high on him, with a productive 2014 season that was cut short because of injury.

Naquin hit .313 in his first full season at Akron with 12 doubles and five triples before getting hit by a pitch and breaking a bone in his right hand, so the extra-base hit potential is there. His ability to get on-base is also there too, finishing with a .371 OBP in 76 games. He stole 14 bases and played solid defense in centerfield.

It’s a matter of staying healthy which Naquin will look to do in 2015 as he could spend some time in Triple-A if he gets off to a hot start.

Detroit Tigers

KevinZiomek Kevin Ziomek – LHP (BA’s Rank #6)

Baseball Factory Lineage: Attended an Under Armour Baseball Factory National Tryout & Premium Video Program in Trenton, NJ (10/5/08), 2009 Under Armour Baseball Factory Pre-Season All-America Tournament Participant

The Skinny: Scouts saw Ziomek at the 2009 Pre-Season All-America event and felt the future was bright for this lefty and they were correct as the Tigers drafted him in the 2nd round of the 2013 Draft out of Vanderbilt University.

Last season, Ziomek won 10 games for Single-A West Michigan, posting a very solid 2.27 ERA, 1.15 WHIP in 123.0 innings pitched.

Two stats have the Tigers organization excited and that is his 152 strikeouts and a .201 opponents average in his first full season in professional ball. By all indications, he’ll advance to Double-A Erie and could factor into the Tigers pitching plans come 2016.

JamesMcCann James McCann – C (BA’s Rank #9)

Baseball Factory Lineage: Attended a National Team Tryout in Westmont (2/27/05), 2008 Under Armour Baseball Factory Pre-Season All-America Tournament Participant

The Skinny: McCann has already made his big league debut last season for the Tigers down the stretch, going 3-for-12 in nine games. The former Futures game participant is the best catching prospect in the Tigers organization and could legitimately push for a roster spot this season. He’s only 24 and played well at Toledo in 2014, posting career highs in doubles (34), OPS (.770) and batting average (.295).

If he doesn’t break camp with Detroit, he’ll continue to start every day at Toledo, but McCann will be knocking on the big league door again very soon.

Kansas City Royals

SeanManaea Sean Manaea – LHP (BA’s Rank #3)

Baseball Factory Lineage:  Attended an Under Armour Baseball Factory National Tryout & Premium Video Program in Indianapolis, IN (9/6/09)

The Skinny: Manaea is a big prospect from a size standpoint (6’5″, 235) and pitched well last season despite a 7-8 record High-A Wilmington. He sports a good fastball that sits in the mid 90’s to go along with a plus slider. Showing the ability to miss bats, Manaea posted 146 strikeouts in just 121 2/3 innings last season.

Age is definitely on his side (23 years old) and he’ll get the chance to continue developing into a top pitcher in 2015 with the Royals Double-A team as they continue finding solid left-handed pitchers which isn’t easy.

Hunter Dozier – 3B (BA’s Rank #5)

Baseball Factory Lineage: Attended an Under Armour Baseball Factory National Tryout in Carrollton, TX (7/20/09)

The Skinny: Dozier, the eighth overall pick in the 2013 Draft, played at Stephen F Austin State University and was the Southland Conference Player of the Year in 2013. After signing he performed well on a limited basis, playing 69 games in ’13 at Rookie-Level Idaho and then a promotion to Single-A Lexington, hitting a combined .308 with 30 doubles.

He’s continued to climb the ranks of the Royals organization, playing most of ’14 at High-A Wilmington, before moving on to Double-A Northwest Arkansas. Dozier struggled there as his strikeout totals elevated, but fell victim to a .209 BABIP, which suggests he’ll raise that stat as he continues to hit better pitching.

Dozier has shown a good eye at the plate and performed well in the Arizona Fall League, collecting six doubles and a league-leading 18 walks which is a good sign heading into 2015.

He’ll likely start the season back at Northwest Arkansas, eyeing a promotion to Triple-A Omaha in the near future.

Foster Griffin Foster Griffin – LHP (BA’s Rank #7)

Baseball Factory Lineage: 2013 Under Armour All-America Game Participant

The Skinny: The Royals took Griffin 28th overall in last year’s draft and the 19-year old quickly got to work, reporting to Rookie-Level Burlington in the Appalachian League.

He started 11 games, finishing with a 3.21 ERA and opponents to just a .186 batting average. It’s a reminder of the big things ahead for this big left-hander, who won’t turn 20 until July 27th.

He’ll look to refine his pitch arsenal and lower his walk totals, but his size and arm slot suggest that the best is yet to come for Griffin. He could begin the season in Lexington at Single-A.

Christian Colon – SS/2B (BA’s Rank #10)

Baseball Factory Lineage: Participated in Under Armour Baseball Factory Team One Underclass Game 2005

The Skinny: Colon may be ranked 10 on Baseball America’s list, but he’s already received crucial experience for the Royals down the stretch to their World Series run, playing second, third and short stop last season.

The former first round pick in 2010 will find himself with the Royals in 2015 and in the team’s history book, scoring the winning run in the 12th inning against the Oakland Athletics in last season’s Wild Card round that sent the Royals to the divisional round of the post season.

He’ll be an excellent plug-and-play for Ned Yost in 2015, playing a multitude of positions and can swing the bat after hitting .333 with 5 doubles and a triple in 45 regular season AB’s last season.

Minnesota Twins

ByronBuxton Byron Buxton – OF (BA’s Rank #1)

Baseball Factory Lineage: 2011 Under Armour All-America Game Participant

The Skinny: The 2nd overall pick in the 2012 Draft rolls into the 2015 season most likely baseball’s top prospect for the second consecutive year.

The massively talented Buxton has high expectations again, after being limited to only 31 games in 2014 due to injuries. He’s a five-tool guy and a potential future face of the Minnesota Twins franchise, so the future is bright. He’s a game changer as was evident back at the 2011 All-America Game with his speed, defense and his bat.

Despite the injuries and the somewhat relative unknown because he hasn’t had a full season at a higher level yet, his ceiling remains sky high and he’ll likely begin the season at Double-A to prove that the top billing is 100% real.

Jose OrlandoBerrios Jose Berrios – RHP (BA’s Rank #3)

Baseball Factory Lineage: 2011 Under Armour All-America Game Participant

The Skinny: Berrios is quickly climbing the Twins organizational ladder at just 20 years old, reaching Triple-A Rochester at the end of last season.

He pitched extremely well for Single-A Fort Myers, going 9-3 with a 1.97 ERA and a WHIP of 1.05 in 96.0 innings pitched. Berrios appeared in the Futures game and then received the promotion to Double-A New Britain where he made eight starts, winning three games.

His fastball is lively, sitting in the mid 90’s, with two developing secondary pitches (curveball and change-up) and showing a good strikeout-to-walk ratio. He needs more time in the minors, continuing to face better hitters along the way, but he’ll help the Twins in the long run.

KohlStewart Kohl Stewart – RHP (BA’s Rank #4)

Baseball Factory Lineage: Attended an Under Armour Baseball Factory National Tryout & Premium Video Program in Houston, TX (2/5/12)

The Skinny: Stewart was the Twins 4th overall pick in the 2013 draft and was able to play after being signed towards the end of the ’13 season. In ’14, he pitched at Single-A Cedar Rapids, making 19 starts and giving the Twins organization hope for the future with this righty.

He has the body size and arm that projects well near the top of the rotation. Scouts rave about his two-seam fastball that tails away from hitters and a developing slider and change-up that gives him a nice stable of pitches for the future.

Stewart is the Twins top pitching prospect at 20 years of age, he has a repeatable delivery and doesn’t walk many batters. Any team will take that with their top pitching prospect.

Alex Meyer – RHP (BA’s Rank #5)

Baseball Factory Lineage: Attended Baseball Factory’s Premium Video Programs in Columbia, MD (1/1/03) and Pleasantville, NY (7/25/05)

The Skinny: The “veteran” of the Twins prospect list at 25 years old, Meyer was a former first round pick (23rd overall) by the Washington Nationals in the 2011 draft and was dealt to the Twins for centerfielder Denard Span before the 2013 season.

He can and should factor into the Twins starting rotation in 2015 after pitching all of 2014 with Rochester, making 27 starts and posting a 3.52 ERA. He has the pitches; a mid 90’s fastball, a swing-and-miss slider and a change-up.

Scouts like the downward plane to his throwing because of his size which induces a lot of ground balls and he possesses nice mechanics and balance.

NickBurdi Nick Burdi – RHP (BA’s Rank #7)

Baseball Factory Lineage: 2010 Under Armour All-America Game Participant

The Skinny: Burdi is a hard-throwing righty with the makeup to be a premier reliever in the major leagues one day. His fastball is electric and his strikeout rate per 9 innings is phenomenal (16.82).

In 2010, scouts raved then at how quick his arm was and how quickly the ball jumped on hitters. That hasn’t changed and he’s added 4-5 mph on his fastball. Watch out for Burdi in 2-to-3 years.
