Baseball Factory Alumni Help Clinch Victories in Super Regional Action
It was a wild weekend of games in Super Regional action across the country as seven of eight programs have punched their ticket to Omaha, with surprises along the way and storied programs also moving forward.
The University of Miami advanced to their 25th College World Series, second-most among any program nationwide, defeating Boston College, 9-4. Helping to clinch their second-straight appearance in the College World Series, they were led by Baseball Factory alumni in the decider.
Willie Abreu, who was selected on Saturday in the sixth round by the Colorado Rockies, got the party started on Sunday with an RBI single to give the Hurricanes the lead in the bottom of the second. Overall, the Team One South, Futures East and Team One Florida showcase participant went 3-for-3 with a double, an RBI, a walk and two runs scored. First baseman Christopher Barr went 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Barr, a West Palm Beach, FL native, attended an Under Armour Baseball Factory National Tryout in Miami Shores, FL back in 2009 and played in the 2010 Under Armour Fall Classic.
The win went to Factory alum, Frankie Bartow, who came into the game in relief, going 3 1/3, allowing one earned run, four hits, a walk and a strikeout. Bartow attended the Under Armour Southeast Championships and the Fall Classic in 2012 and 2013 as well as the Memorial Day Classic, Under Armour Invitational and an Under Armour Baseball Factory College PREP event in Davie, FL back in 2013. The Hurricanes face the Arizona Wildcats, who defeated Mississippi State, 6-5 to advance to Omaha.
The Wildcats took both games against Mississippi State, defeating the Bulldogs, 6-5 to advance to Omaha. Factory alum, catching prospect, Cesar Salazar – who attended the 2014 Under Armour All-America Pre-Season Tournament – went 3-for-6 with an RBI in the decider. LF Alfonso Rivas collected two hits in five at-bats with an RBI and a run scored.
One of the best stories in college baseball, the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers advanced to their first ever College World Series appearance, defeating LSU, 4-3 with a walk-off single by Factory alum, Michael Paez.
With the score tied 3-3 in the bottom of the ninth, Paez, who attended the 2013 Under Armour Memorial Day Classic, came to the plate with a runner at second and nobody out. He delivered a single to left, his only single of the game to lift the team over heavily-favored LSU. Coastal Carolina now awaits the winner of tonight’s take-all game between Florida and Florida State.
Texas Tech advances to their second CWS appearance in school history and the second in three years after they defeated East Carolina, 11-0 in Lubbock, Texas. The Red Raiders took the final two games in the Best of 3, becoming just the 30th school since the Super Regional format was introduced in 1999 to overcome a 1-0 hole.
Hunter Hargrove led the way for the Red Raiders, going 3-for-5 with two doubles, 4 RBI and a run scored. We saw the Mansfield, TX native at our National Tryout in Carrollton, Texas in July of 2011. The 14-hit attack was sparked by Hargrove, one of four Red Raiders to collect multi-hits in the game.
TCU heads to Omaha after defeating Texas A&M, 4-1 in College Station, Texas. Leadoff hitter, Austen Wade paved the way for the Horned Frogs, walking three times with an RBI in the deciding game. Wade attended an Under Armour Baseball Factory College PREP in Plainview, Texas back in March of 2012.
UC-Santa Barbara advanced in a hard-fought series, defeating the Louisville Cardinals on their home turf, 4-3 in the decider to advance to Omaha. The Gauchos did it in comeback fashion, rallying from a 3-0 deficit in the ninth inning against All-America closer and first-round MLB Draft selection, Zack Burdi.
Louisville was an outstanding 36-1 this season at home, and in stunning fashion, their season ended on one swing off the bat of freshman catcher, Sam Cohen. Cohen, entering the game as a pinch-hitter with the bases loaded, smacked a 1-2 change up just inside the foul pole down the right field line for the victory.
Factory alumni Noah Davis pitched well for the Gauchos, going 5 1/3, allowing three earned runs on seven hits, walking two and striking out four. Factory alum Kevin Chandler got the win in relief, picking up the final two outs in the top of the ninth.
Davis participated in the 2013 Under Armour Southwest Championships and Chandler participated in the 2012 Under Armour So Cal Classic and a National Tryout in Los Angeles, CA in 2013.
The sixth walk-off victory of the season for UCSB gives them the opportunity to move on as they’ll face Oklahoma State in Omaha.
Oklahoma State picked up two straight victories over South Carolina to advance; 5-1 and 3-1 as they make their first appearance in the College World Series since 1999. It’s the 20th time OSU has punched their ticket to Omaha, sixth-most all time in NCAA history.
