30 and 60 Yard Dash
How Do We Test? The athlete gets into an athletic, base running stance and runs as fast as they can. Timing starts on athletes’ first movement.
What Does It Test? Measures speed in seconds over first 30 yards as well as the total of 60 yards.
Why We Test? We test the 30 to see if an athlete has a quicker start or finish to their 60 yard dash. Knowing where the athlete is faster or slower will help them focus their training more on that particular part of their run to help decrease overall 60 yard dash.
Broad Jump
How Do We Test? Athlete stands with their feet square and shoulder width apart. While bending at knees and exploding, athlete jumps as long (horizontal) as they can while landing in a balanced position.
What Does It Test? The broad jump tests lower-body strength and explosiveness. Both are key attributes when it comes to throwing a baseball or swinging a bat.
Why We Test? A long broad jump correlates to plus arm strength or plus power at the plate.
Home To First
How Do We Test? Home to first is timed from contact to when athlete first touches the bag at first.
What Does It Test? Time in seconds from contact to first base.
Why We Test? A fast home to first time is a true measure of speed. Faster runners who have low home to first times put pressure on the defense to make plays smoothly and quickly.
Exit Velocity
How Do We Test? A hitter is given 3 swings to hit a ball off of a tee. They swing with maximum effort to drive the ball.
What Does It Test? Velocity (mph) off of the barrel of the bat.
Why We Test? Exit velocity correlates to a hitter’s power.
Shuttle Run
How Do We Test? Athlete starts in a 3-point stance, explodes 5 yards to his/her right, touches the line, goes back 10 yards to his/her left, left hand touches the line, pivot, explodes 5 more yards back to the right and finishes. This is tested both to the athlete’s right and left side.
What Does It Test? The shuttle run tests athlete’s lateral quickness, explosion in short areas and ability to change direction.
Why We Test? Infielders: Need to have the ability to quickly get to a ground ball hit to their right or left. Outfielders: Need to have the ability to quickly get to a ball hit to their right or left while also changing direction. Base Runners: Need to have the ability to go from a lead-off stance and explode out when stealing a base.
Arm Velocity
How Do We Test? Athlete is given 3 throws into a screen/net. They can use their whole body to gain ground and throw the ball as hard as they can into screen/net.
What Does It Test? Velocity (mph)
Why We Test? To see how hard the athlete can throw.
Grip Strength
How Do We Test? Athlete holds the dynamometer to their side, squeezes as hard as they can, holding for 3 seconds. This is tested both on the athlete’s right and left hand.
What Does It Test? Grip strength in psi (pounds per square inch).
Why We Test? A high grip strength correlates to a higher velocity and more power at the plate.
