EVENT DATE: 10/16/05

LOCATION: Baseball Factory Field, University of Maryland @ Baltimore County

Top Prospects

The Top Prospects were selected by Dan Mooney (Assistant Director of Scouting) based on their performance at the event. The ranking is based on their status as college prospects, and is relative to the entire group of players we saw on the day.

IMPORTANT – We list players at the position(s) where we feel they are prospects. This may result in a player being listed at a position they did not play for us, or having a position they did play for us go unlisted. As usual, all references to “average” are based on high school standards.

1. Brett Eibner, OF/RHP, 2007 – Cary, NC (Green Hope HS), 6-1, 175, R/R. Eibner has an athletic looking body – tall, lean, with good proportions. He showed several above average tools – ran a 6.96 60 yard dash, was a well above average thrower, and was a well above average fielder. In the outfield he slowed the game down even in a workout setting, gathered well, had plus direction, and a great arm stroke out front that produced carry on his throws. He brought his loose easy stroke to the mound where he showed an 83-84 mph fastball and a tight downer breaking ball. He had a polished delivery with good tempo and rhythm. At the plate he had life in his body and good extension. When he put everything together and had proper timing the ball jumped off the bat. Needs to work on his load and gaining rhythm to hit. Potential two way guy at the next level.

2. Andrew Small, OF/3B, 2006 – Long Branch, NJ (Long Branch HS), 6-1, 188, R/R. We first saw Small at our July 2005 Baltimore, MD B.A.T.S. Session, where he narrowly missed a selection as one of the Top Prospects. However, his physical build along with his arm strength and power potential led us to select him for the Team One East Showcase in mid August – where he showed an improved set of tools along with the ability to use them, leading to his selection as one of the Top Hitting Prospects and later as one of the Top 25 Prospects at that event. Now, two months after Team One East, he showed that he has continued to progress – this time with the glove, where he further solidified his versatility. He showed glimpses of potential as a 3B all along, but was more playable in the OF. He profiles better as a 3B, where his arm and body (easy to project future size and strength) will be fit better as he matures.

3. Kevin Brashears, C, 2006 – Hagerstown, MD (St. Maria Goretti HS), 5-11, 170, R/R. Brashears has a lean athletic looking body and showed easy actions in everything he did. He showed well above average foot speed (6.84 and 6.90 60 yard dashes). Behind the plate he had soft hands, an idea for framing, and worked around the baseball well. To blocking moved well and was quick to recover. He had a strong arm whip out front. Has plenty of arm strength, but his footwork to throw causes his times to be higher (2.28-2.34). Has quick feet, and with work to use them to his advantage his times will improve drastically. At the plate he had hitter actions. Showed life in his wrists and hands if he allows himself to use them. He needs to get ready sooner (load) and stiffen his front side at contact. An athletic player with good upside, as bat develops he may see some OF time.
