FACTORY SCOUTING REPORT Richmond, VA B.A.T.S. Video Scouting Session & PUMA National Tournament Team Tryout

EVENT DATE: 5/1/2005

LOCATION: Pitt Field, University of Richmond

After getting rained out on April 24, we had a beautiful day for our sessions on May 1. The state of Virginia is known for high school talent, and the group of players we saw lived up to that billing. It was tough to choose the Top 5, there were some very deserving players that did not make the list below.

Top 5 Prospects (2006 graduates)

1. Tate Swanson, C – Herndon, VA (Herndon HS), 6-1, 220, S/R. A potential two sport college athlete (also a football linebacker and running back), Swanson impressively combines strength and quickness. He showed well above average hitting ability from both sides of the plate, with more power from the left side. The defensive ability he showed would allow him to stay behind the plate at the college level, making him a highly coveted offensive catcher.

2. Travis Brake, RHP/OF – Greenville, VA (Riverheads HS), 6-4, 200, L/R. A three sport athlete in high school (football, basketball, baseball), Brake is oozing potential. His powerful arm stroke led to a fastball that touched 87 mph, while the potential for a low 90’s fastball is clearly on the horizon. His left handed stroke was compact and created some power, is interesting enough to give him potential as a 2-way player.

3. Nick Pisula, OF – Virginia Beach, VA (Kellam HS), 6-1, 175, R/R. An athletic player, with a high waist and wiry strength. Showed four above average tools on the day, only power did not show as one of his strengths. He ran 6.87 60yds, and hit 86 mph on the radar gun. Has the most room to improve at the plate, and he already showed a quick swing with balance. A very interesting player with a lot of potential.

4. Chris Berset, C – Vienna, VA (The Heights School), 6-0, 155, S/R. The most well rounded player at the event, he did everything well. Even in a workout, his confidence was evident. He showed a repeatable and accurate release on throws to second base (times between 2.00 and 2.08). His left handed stroke was very good and was more powerful than his right handed stroke, though he is fully capable of hitting from either side at the college level.

5. Michael Morris, RHP – Orange, VA (Woodberry Forest School), 6-2, 175, R/R. A lean and long pitcher with a whippy, quick arm and a fastball that touched 86 mph. He also threw a good slider and a very good change-up. He has potential for even better stuff in the future, as he fills out and improves his direction. He also plays shortstop now, though his chance as a 2-way player would most likely come as a secondary outfielder.
