Noah Shaw Shows Five-Tool Improvement in Nyack, NY
In yet another instance of huge improvement in less than one year, 2016 OF Noah Shaw improved all five tools since we last saw him in January at the Baseball Factory National Spring Training at Pirate City.
Leaving Bradenton, he owned a 7.58 60 yard dash and 75 raw velocity along with subjective tool grades (fielding ability, hitting ability and raw power) in the near-average range on the Baseball Factory 20-70 scouting scale.
On Sunday December 7 at the Under Armour Baseball Factory National Tryout in Nyack, NY, he showed significantly improved numbers nearly across the board. His 60 yard dash went down by over one tenth of a second, from 7.58 to 7.45.
Raw velocity improved by ten mph, up from 75 to 85 mph. Fielding ability went up a half grade, hitting ability improved by a full grade, and raw jumped nearly two grades. In less than one calendar year, he went from a player with commonly seen tools in to a player with above-average tools – an amazing accomplishment in any amount of time, let alone just one year.
Other instances:
– 2017 RHP Niels Stone jumped his top end fastball velocity ten miles per hour between January and November 2014
– 2015 C Michael Farnell lowered his pop time 2.2 to 1.88 and raised raw velo 83 to 87 in one calendar year
– 2016 LHP Kristopher Reber raised fastball velocity from 77 to 83 in ten months, over the course of three events
– 2015 C Antonio Torres 66 to 84, 2.23 to 1.97 from Fall 2010 to Fall 2014
A pair of 2016 OF in particular showed interesting combinations of body and tools.
William Rossiter (Kennedy Catholic HS – Granite Springs, NY) stands at 6-foot-2 and 165 pounds with athletic proportions and room to fill out.
Nicholas Skrobola (Middletown, NY) is a little shorter at 6-foot, but is also more physically mature with present strength at 205 pounds.
2016 RHP Greg Blum (Roy C. Ketcham HS – Wappingers Falls, NY) topped at 85 mph with his fastball, and spun a tight low 70s breaking ball.
6-foot-4 170 pound 2015 RHP Ramon Disla (Alfred E. Smith – Bronx, NY) featured a live arm and a quality three-pitch mix. He touched 84 with his fastball from a slot nearly over the top, spun a 12-6 curve around 70 mph, and showed feel for an upper 70s changeup.
