Under Armour Baseball Factory National Tryout Spotlight – Mesa, AZ

The Under Armour Baseball Factory National Tryout Tour will take over Sloan Park in Mesa, AZ on Monday, January 18th.

In addition to Sloan Park being the Spring Training Home of the Chicago Cubs, the facility also plays host to the Under Armour Pre-Season All-America Tournament each year. This year, the outstanding event will run from January 15-17. The event will mark another successful tournament with over 375 players from 43 different states, in addition to the country of Japan having representation as well.

Today’s highlighted players all hail from the state of Arizona and attended events in the Mesa or Phoenix area and are having major success playing collegiate ball.

Colby Woodmansee – Colby is a 2013 graduate from Desert Vista High School in Phoenix, AZ, having earned four varsity letters in baseball and was also a two-year team captain. In his senior season, Woodmansee hit .355 with eight homers and 36 RBI and was named a 2013 Division 1 All-Section 1st team & 2013 Division 1 All-State Honorable Mention.

The skill set was undeniable, even from an earlier age, starting with his first Under Armour Baseball Factory College PREP event in La Jolla, CA in October of 2010. Soft hands and the ability to field the ball out in front were calling cards on defense for Woodmansee, as he attended the 2010 Arizona Fall Invitational where he continued to show solid defensive skills during the event. Scouts continued to note his ability to field the ball cleanly with good accuracy and strength on his throws. At the plate, Colby collected two hits and used all fields.

In his final Baseball Factory event at the 2011 Team One West event in July, he ran his best 60-yard dash to that point (6.94), improving even more defensively, receiving plus grades on throwing and fielding. At the event, he went 2-for-3 with three walks, showing strong recognition of the strike zone.

Woodmansee is now in his junior season at Arizona State University and the 6’3″, 195 pound infielder is an integral part of the Sun Devils baseball team. Last season as a sophomore, Colby was named a First-Team All-Pac-12 and a Pac-12 All-Academic Honorable Mention after starting all 58 games at short stop, hitting .308 with 44 RBI, 74 hits, including a team-high 18 doubles, one triple, five home runs. He scored 36 runs and added 109 total bases.

Finishing in the top five on the team in batting average, slugging percentage, runs scored, hits, RBI, doubles, home runs, total bases and walks last season, Woodmansee became the 19th player in Sun Devil history to play for the USA collegiate team when he was announced for the 2015 USA Baseball Collegiate National Team.

Blaze Bohall – Bohall is a Glendale, AZ native and attended Mountain Ridge High School in Phoenix, graduating in 2014 after being a three-year letterwinner under head coach Lance Billingsly. He made 10 appearances for the team as a senior, going 2-2 with a 3.69 ERA, notching 44 strikeouts in 43 2/3 innings of work.

Bohall wrapped his freshman season at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas in 2015 for the Runnin’ Rebels, posting a 6-3 record with a 3.66 ERA in 15 appearances (12 starts), striking out 38 batters in 71 1/3 innings pitched, good for second most on the team in a very tough Mountain West conference.

As a 14-year old in May of 2010, Bohall attended an Under Armour Baseball Factory National Tryout in Phoenix.

Marco Smith – Smith will graduate this year from Saint Mary’s Catholic in Phoenix after participating in numerous Baseball Factory events since January of 2014.

As a sophomore, Smith attended the College PREP event in Goodyear, AZ, where the lean, athletic catcher posted pop times between 2.44 and 2.66 with solid accuracy. In the next year and a half, Smith shaved three tenths off his pop time, recording a 2.19 a year later at his College PREP event in Mesa. At the Baseball Factory National World Series in Pirate City this past July, Marco posted around a 2.27 pop time, proving to be a solid target behind the dish with a very good idea of the strike zone.

Overall, Smith is the kind of player both coaches and teammates alike enjoy being around and having on their side as he was noted as the ultimate team player.
