2015 Under Armour All-America Pre-Season Tournament: 2015 Grad Honorable Mentions

The class of 2015 Honorable Mention group includes a pair of high school teammates from Pennsylvania, three switch-hitters, and three Division I commits. Every position on the field is represented at least once (we didn’t set out to do that), as is each corner of the country — from Washington across the Midwestern states to Rhode Island, and working back West from Florida across Texas to California.

University of Oregon commit Parker Kelly is one of just two players to make this list in consecutive years — OF/RHP Craig Barry from South Georgia is the other. A two-way 3B/RHP from Oregon, Parker is the younger brother of 2013 Under Armour All-American (and four-time Pre-Season All-American) Carson Kellya 2nd round pick of the St. Louis Cardinals in 2014, and recent convert from 3B to catcher.

Kyle Adkins

2015 C Kyle Adkins

C – 5’10″/195 – L/R – Taft Union HS – Taft, CA

A talented and instinctual defensive catcher, Adkins showed well in workouts and in games. His exchange was simple and clean, and his feet worked in coordination with his upper body to allow for consistently strong and accurate throws. He posted release times in the 2.00 to 2.04 range, and sat low and easy to receive. A left-handed hitter with a simple and direct stroke, he featured rhythm to hit along with good balance. In eight at bats, he singled twice and drove in a run.

Craig Barry

2015 OF/RHP Craig Barry

OF/RHP – 6’3″/190 – R/R – Valdosta HS – Hahira, GA

Barry is a talented and capable two-way player with a high-waist and wide shoulders at 6-foot-3 and 190 pounds. A right-handed hitter, he kept the barrel working through the zone a long time to create backspin – and to handle off-speed pitches when he was a little out front. He ran the bases aggressively and with good instincts, allowing him to play faster than his respectable 7.09 60 yard dash. In the outfield, he generated momentum through his play on the ball, such that he was able to carry his throws a long way on a strong line. He topped at 87 mph on the mound, and worked around 84 with some arm side life. He showed feel for a downer curve with some tilt in the upper 60s, along with a flatter breaking ball in the low 70s. Barry was an Honorable Mention at the 2014 Under Armour All-America Pre-Season Tournament, and is one of just two players to earn those honors again this year.

Dallas Bryan

2015 RHP Dallas Bryan

RHP – 6’4″/170 – R/R – Grundy County HS – Hillsboro, TN

Working from a quick tempo delivery with a high knee lift, Bryan featured two usable pitches. His fastball sat between 85 and 87 with arm side run, and reached as high as 89 mph. He pitched to both sides of the plate with his fastball, generally challenging hitters and working ahead in the count. He showed feel for his mid 70s breaking ball as well — he was able to land the pitch for strikes, and was able to use it for outs. Standing a long and slender 6-foot-4 and 170 pounds, he has an ideal frame to generate downward angle on his pitches.

Matt Carpenter

2015 SS/2B Matt Carpenter

SS/2B – 5’9″/155 – S/R – Aurora HS – Aurora, OH – Ohio State Univ. commit

Carpenter, an Ohio State commit, showed a well-rounded set of tools without a glaring weakness. He appeared to handle the bat equally well from both sides of the plate, working from the same setup and with rhythm to hit both left- and right-handed — the only difference was a little flatter swing angle from the right side in BP. He showed some feel for hitting in his at bats, and did a good job of battling deep in counts. Defensively, he moved light on his feet and showed smooth, fluid actions. He showed some catch and throw skills and the ability to pivot his hips, giving him the ability to play both sides of the bag.

Rylan Cratsenberg

2015 OF Rylan Cratsenberg

OF – 6’3″/215 – R/R – Federal Way HS – Federal Way, WA

At 6-foot-3 and 215 pounds, Cratsenberg has a big and broad build with strong legs and a physical look. He has a lot of untapped potential, but is still impressive in workouts at present. He loses the barrel early to create some length prior to contact, but still drives the ball easily with a wood bat — offering proof of standout strength through contact, and allowing for the projection of future power as he cleans up the path with his barrel. Defensively, he appears well suited for a right field profile. He has plenty of arm for the position, as evidenced by his ability to drive throws on a low and strong line into the plate.

Cameron Domico

2015 3B Cameron Domico

3B – 6’0″/190 – R/R – Charles Brush HS – South Euclid, OH

Domico has a solid build with athletic proportions at 6-foot and 190 pounds. He featured a loose swing and the ability to get the barrel to the ball quickly. This became more apparent in his second round of BP when he did a better job of getting off his back leg, and when he got his hands freed up over his back shoulder — exposing his best passes, and resulting in hard contact from gap to gap. Defensively, he moved his feet well and showed the ability to create an angle such that he could play through the ball with momentum to the target. He was able to drive his throws across the infield with his feet underneath him, and showed the body control to vary his stroke on plays to his glove side and coming in on slow rollers.

Ryan Fish

2015 OF/RHP Ryan Fish

OF/RHP – 6’1″/180 – S/R – River Forest HS – Oak Park, IL – Jefferson College commit

Fish offers two-way potential as a switch-hitting outfielder with a mid 80’s fastball on the mound. His offensive approach was nearly identical from both sides of the plate, with his left-handed stroke appearing a little more natural. His hands were generally low at setup, and stayed low through his pre-pitch action. He finished flat as well, but was able to drive the ball into the outfield. Defensively, he showed an accurate arm from a high slot that allowed for online carry. He topped at 87 mph with his fastball, and showed confidence in his low to mid 60s breaking ball.

Devon Garcia

2015 SS/OF Devon Garcia

SS/OF – 6’0″/187 – R/R – Bowling Green HS – Bowling Green, OH – Ohio University commit

Garcia featured loose and easy defensive actions at shortstop. He moved light on his feet, and showed feel positioning his body ahead of the play on the ball such that he was able complete plays quickly and with little effort. He was listed as a switch-hitter on the roster, but only hit right-handed. His move was loose and easy, with actions similar to those we saw in the infield. He rotated his core well to deliver the barrel to contact, allowing for a quick and strong stroke.

Parker Harm

2015 OF/LHP Parker Harm

OF/LHP – 6’1″170 – L/L – Mandan HS – Mandan, ND

Standing a wiry 6-foot-1 and 170 pounds, Harm has a well-rounded set of tools as a position player and offers value on the mound as well. His left-handed stroke was compact and had some natural lift. He carried his hands low, and used strong and quick wrists to generate hard contact to the pull side in BP. In game at bats, he did a good job of hitting the ball where it was pitched. His outfield arm was strong and accurate, while his actions were athletic and fluid. On the mound, he worked from a three-quarters arm angle to generate tailing action on his 81-84 mph fastball. His breaking had sweeping break across the zone in the mid 60s, as it was often thrown from a slot lower than his fastball.

Niko Hulsizer

2015 OF Niko Hulsizer

OF – 6’2″/205 – R/R – Governor Mifflin HS – Mohnton, PA

Hulsizer stands an athletically proportioned 6-foot-2 and 205 pounds, and posted 6.94 in the 60 yard dash. His outfield arm was among the best at the event, and like the rest of his tools it lends itself well to a right field profile. His right-handed stroke was loose with a full move through contact. He got the barrel to contact quickly, and was able to accelerate it through the zone. He made hard contact to all fields, and drove the ball with authority to the pull side.

Dylan Hutcheson

2015 OF Dylan Hutcheson

OF – 5’11″/175 – S/L – Rider HS – Wichita Falls, TX

Offering proof that blazing 60 yard dash speed isn’t a prerequisite for range, Hutcheson covered a tremendous amount of ground in the outfield. To be fair, he posted a more than respectable time of 6.89, but he played significantly above that. His first step was true, he reached speed in a short burst and he instinctually tracked balls on ideal angles. While his fielding abilities appear well-suited for center field, his arm is quite a bit above what is normally expected there. A switch-hitter, he showed a loose and quick left-handed stroke. He worked from a quick double-tap stride from both sides, with better rhythm left-handed. He got down the line as good as 4.19 from the left side of the plate, offering additional proof that he plays the game at a higher speed than he tests.

Kevin Johnson

2015 SS/2B Kevin Johnson

SS/2B – 5’10″/170 – L/R – Oak Forest HS – Midlothian, IL

A left-handed hitting shortstop, Johnson featured easy and fluid actions both with the glove and the bat. He posted 6.84 in the 60 yard dash, and backed it up with home to first times between 4.25 and 4.29. His left-handed stroke was built for line drive contact, with a level path and obvious hand-eye coordination. He had good rhythm with his pre-pitch action, and showed good feel for the barrel. In eight trips to the plate, he singled three times and walked once. Defensively, he moved his feet with quickness and ease. After making consistently solid plays on the ball, he showed excellent body control and a natural feel to catch and throw — allowing him to complete plays moving to the hole, up the middle and on the run.

Parker Kelly

2015 3B/RHP Parker Kelly

3B/RHP – 6’2″/220 – R/R – Westview HS – Portland, OR – Univ. of Oregon commit

Parker earned notice as a 2014 Under Armour All-America Pre-Season Tournament Honorable Mention, and he returns to the same group again in 2015. A University of Oregon commit, he again showed two-way ability highlighted by infield arm strength and raw power. He drove the ball with authority to the pull side, and carried his throws from third base very well. On the mound, he retired seven of the fifteen batters he faced via ground ball outs, struck out one and allowed no runs. He was around the plate with his three-pitch mix. Both secondary offerings showed a lot of promise, and both were in the mid 70s — his breaking ball had definition to it’s 10-4 shape, while his change had tailing action and was thrown with good feel.

Quinton Logan

2015 LHP/OF Quinton Logan

LHP/OF – 5’11″/190 – L/L – Cathedral HS – Natchez, MS – Hinds Community College commit

Logan stands a solid and strong 5-foot-11 and 190 pounds with a wide back and defined shoulders. He offered two-way potential through a well-rounded set of tools as a L/L corner OF, and a quality two-pitch mix on the mound. He appeared a little more natural on the mound, where he showed flashes of pitchability to go with quality stuff. He topped at 85 mph with his fastball, and was able to land his low 70s breaking ball. As a position player, he featured a strong left-handed stroke with some looseness through the zone and the ability to impact the ball. He posted 7.09 in the 60 yard dash.

Max Marcotte

2015 RHP Max Marcotte

RHP – 6’3″/170 – L/R – Coventry HS – Coventry, RI – Wheaton College commit

Marcotte, a long and lean cold-weather right-hander, showed flashes of a high quality three-pitch mix. At 6-foot-3 and 170 pounds, he used his long levers to drive his fastball down the slope with good plane. He topped at 86 and worked right around 84-85 mph with slight arm side life. His breaking ball flashed plus in the upper 60s with some tilt to mostly downward break. Currently a mid to upper 70s offering with cut action, his change has the makings of a quality third pitch. Experienced evaluators know the cold-weather arms usually show their true stuff a little later than the warm-weather guys. If and when that happens for Marcotte, he could turn out to be a very good pickup for Division III Wheaton College in Illinois.

Julio Medina

2015 RHP Julio Medina

RHP – 6’3″/160 – R/R – University HS – Debary, FL – Mississippi College commit

One of only seven 2015 arms to touch at least 90 mph, Medina worked between 85 and 89 with tailing arm side life and bumped 90 a few times. His breaking ball flashed plus when he stayed with it out front, and he threw some low 80s offerings with changeup traits. He mainly featured fastball and breaking ball, and was very aggressive with both. He battled some control problems, mainly due to a tendency to overthrow that led to an inconsistent landing and finish. However, in spurts his stuff was special and in the zone. These glimpses combined with his long 6-foot-3 frame give him a chance to develop into a highly effective arm at the next level. He is scheduled to attend Mississippi College, in the Division II Gulf South Conference.

Eric Mock

2015 RHP Eric Mock

RHP – 6’1″/200 – R/R – Governor Mifflin HS – Shillington, PA

Mock showed some ability to command his 86-89 mph fastball, which had good down plane and slight arm side life. In addition to his ability to locate away, he worked inside and elevated — making his mid 70s downer breaking ball much more effective. He threw a lot of breaking ball strikes, and also mixed in some upper 70s changeups as what appeared to be his third pitch, giving him the makings of a quality three-pitch mix. Working from a simple delivery and a repeatable arm stroke, he maintained an aggressive approach and good mound presence through his three controlled innings of work.

Parker Towns

2015 RHP Parker Towns

RHP – 6’4″/230 – R/R – All Saints Episcopal HS – Tyler, TX

With an extra large frame at 6-foot-4 and 230 pounds, Towns topped at 88 mph and worked in the 84-86 mph range. He pitched downhill very well, and threw a lot of fastball strikes. His breaking ball was into the low 70s, and from the high side of a three-quarters arm angle it had two-plane break. A mid to upper 70s changeup was his third pitch. His delivery was simple and repeatable, and he got his arm up in sequence with the landing of his stride foot for the most part. After his originally scheduled outing on day one, he jumped back on the mound the next day (when a scheduled pitcher wasn’t able to go) and showed nearly the same velocity as he did the day before.

Michael Varga

2015 C Michael Varga

C – 6’0″/187 – R/R – Edwin O. Smith HS – Ashford, CT – Florence-Darlington Technical College commit

Varga showed definition in his legs and upper body at 6-foot and 187 pounds. He also showed among the best bat speed at the event, which he combined with his strength to impact the ball with authority. His move was loose and full, with good core rotation and a generally level path. Behind the plate, he featured athletic actions with the ability to move well from his crouch – both to block and to move his feet to throw. He posted workout release times between 2.06 and 2.18, with arm strength to drive his throws through the bag.

Robbie Young

2015 LHP/1B Robbie Young

LHP/1B – 6’2″/185 – L/L – Davidson Academy – Gallatin, TN – Maryville College commit

Young is a well-rounded two-way player with an athletic frame at 6-foot-2 and 185 pounds. He worked quickly on the mound, and attacked hitters with a quality three-pitch mix. His fastball was 82-86 mph with arm side life, while his breaking ball was a 72-76 mph offering with sharp two-plane action. He showed good feel for his low 70s change as his third pitch, and worked from a sound delivery and clean arm stroke. As a position player, he featured athletic actions with the ability to move his feet and maintain body control on a variety of plays at first base. His left-handed stroke showed some promise — he has some bat speed to work with, and was able to manipulate the barrel in BP for contact to all fields.
