46 Baseball Factory Alums Selected in Day 1 of the 2017 MLB Draft

Day 1 of the 2017 MLB Draft is now in the books, full of intrigue and excitement, ending with a large number of Baseball Factory alumni having their names called and the next step of their journey now becoming reality.

2016 Under Armour All-American Royce Lewis was selected first overall by the Minnesota Twins.

The numbers were very impressive. Overall, 46 Baseball Factory alums were selected in the first day of the MLB Draft, with 22 of those alums selected in the first round, including two straight Under Armour All-Americans at the top of the draft. Breaking it down even further, 20 players that were selected were former Under Armour All-Americans, including seven from last year’s game in the first round.

The draft began with the Minnesota Twins selecting 2016 Under Armour All-American SS Royce Lewis No. 1 overall out of JSerra Catholic High School, making him the second consecutive prep athlete to be taken first overall from the Southern California region, following the footsteps of last year’s first overall selection, Mickey Moniak, also a Factory alum, by the Philadelphia Phillies.

North Carolina prep OF Austin Beck went sixth overall to the Oakland Athletics.

Going to the Cincinnati Reds with the second overall pick was last year’s starter in the Under Armour All-America Game, right-handed pitcher Hunter Greene from Notre Dame High School in Sherman Oaks, CA.

Five of the next six selections were Factory alums as well with the Tampa Bay Rays selecting ultra-talented two-way athlete, Brendan McKay from Louisville as a first baseman with the fourth overall pick. McKay played in the 2013 Kelly Kulina Classic. Former Team One Futures Texas standout and current Vanderbilt starter, RHP Kyle Wright was selected fifth overall by the Atlanta Braves and with the sixth pick, the Oakland Athletics tabbed outstanding North Carolina high school OF Austin Beck as he’s returned to full health following a knee injury last May and showed an above-average bat and swing that plays very well at the next level.

Rounding out this grouping is solid collegiate first baseman, Pavin Smith from the University of Virginia, selected seventh overall by the Arizona Diamondbacks. Smith attended the 2012 Team One Futures East event as well as the Under Armour Memorial Day and Fall Classic events in 2013.

With the ninth overall pick, the Milwaukee Brewers selected UC-Irvine second baseman, Keston Hiura, some scouts say is perhaps the most advanced bat in all of college baseball. Rounding out the top 10, the Los Angeles Angels selected two-time Under Armour All-American, Jo Adell, possessing the best all-around tools in this year’s Draft.
