94 mph Bat Exit Velocity and 90 mph Raw Velocity in Waco, TX

On Sunday, March 15 the Under Armour Baseball Factory National Tryout tour stopped at McClennan Community College in Waco, TX. This session was originally scheduled for March 1, but was postponed due to weather.

Eli Mendoza

2018 RHP Eli Mendoza

Though he technically shouldn’t have done it, 2018 RHP Eli Mendoza (Temple HS – Temple, TX) touched 90 mph at the raw velocity station. We normally don’t have pitchers participate there since they are to pitch later in the workout, but sometimes they do it anyway.

When Mendoza took the mound, he worked only from the stretch and topped at 83 mph. He got on top and drove his pitches downhill nicely, and certainly has arm strength that can be further harnessed on the mound. He is just a freshman, and tested well nearly across the board — he posted 6.94 in the 60 yard dash, notched 8-foot-5 inches in the broad jump, and recorded 88 mph bat exit velocity. He plays all over the field in addition to pitching, but at this workout he only pitched and took batting practice.

Right behind Mendoza in the raw velocity were 2016 OF Trey Ramos (Azle HS – Azle, TX) and 2015 C Alejandro Rivera (Eastern Hills HS – Fort Worth, TX) at 89 mph.

Trey Ramos was one of just two players to better nine feet in the broad jump test, with a mark of 9-foot-1. He posted 7.05 in the 60 yard dash, and stands at 6-foot and 165 pounds. His arm strength and fielding ability rated as his best tools at this workout. He has a chance to hit down the road, with a solid right-handed stroke and the ability to make contact to all fields.

Alejandro Rivera stands a sturdy 6-foot-2 and 205 pounds, bats right-handed, and posted a respectable 7.11 in the 60 yard dash. His low pop time was 1.95, while his bat exit velocity was 94 mph — ranking among the best we’ve seen so far in 2015. He showed a well-rounded set of tools at this workout, without any glaring weakness.

In addition to recording the best broad jump on the day with a 9-foot-2, 2016 OF Tristan Gonzalez (West HS – West, TX) also posted 6.73 to beat all runners in the 60 yard dash. He was also among the top eight in raw velocity at 84 mph, and showed quick hands to hit and the makings of a solid right-handed stroke.

Other top runners included 2016 SS Jose Casillas (Shoemaker HS – Fort Hood, TX) at 6.79, 2016 OF Keion Seastrunk (Temple HS – Belton, TX) at 6.97, and 2017 OF Wesley Powell (Lamar HS – Arlington, TX) at 6.98. Powell also posted a raw velocity of 85 mph, giving him two respectable measures as only a sophomore.

Cameron Melcher

2016 C Cameron Melcher

Other top pop times were turned in by 2016 left-handed hitter Cameron Melcher (Tivy HS – Kerrville, TX) at 1.99, and 2017 switch-hitter Levi Bass (China Spring HS – Waco, TX) at 2.02. Only a sophomore, Bass was arguably the most well-rounded player at the event. He swung the bat very well from both sides of the plate, and featured solid receiving and blocking skills to go with his catch and throw skills.

Another switch-hitter with the ability to handle the bat from both sides of the plate was 2016 1B Griffin Benson (Aledo HS – Benbrook, TX). Benson stands at 6-foot-5 and 220 pounds, and showed solid defensive ability at first base.
