Joe Boyle, a 6’6” 225-pound right-handed pitcher, has the look of a future workhorse starting pitcher. He employs a modified rock-and-fire delivery, leading with a high left shoulder that hides the ball well. His arm is quick through release, and he has good finish to all of his pitches. Joe’s stride, long arms and extension make it appear as if the ball leaves his hand about 40 feet from the hitter. That makes his fastball that already sits 90-93 (and touches higher) play even better. It is easy to project even more velocity in the future.
In addition to his big fastball, Joe throws a curve with 2-plane break and tight rotation. At its best, it has depth and functions as an out-pitch. He also throws a change that is surprisingly advanced considering it isn’t needed too much at the high school level based on his other pitches.
Joe looks to be just playing catch on the mound, as it takes very little effort to generate the 90-93 velocity. Once he learns to repeat his delivery and release point more consistently, the volume of strikes will increase and he will reach an even higher prospect level.
