Baseball Factory Alumni On Baseball America’s 2016 Top 10 Prospects List: N.L. Central

Continuing our weekly look at Baseball America’s 2016 Top 10 Prospects Index and where our Baseball Factory alumni rank by division, we check in with Baseball Factory alumni from the National League Central.

Players from across the country have attended Baseball Factory player events, ranging from Under Armour Baseball Factory National Tryouts to the Under Armour All-America Game. A total of 82 Baseball Factory alumni across all 30 baseball teams make up the list in 2016.

Rankings are prioritized by Baseball America and numbered 1 through 10 for each team. We take a look at Baseball Factory’s alumni from the National League Central, where a total of 13 players land on this week’s list.

Chicago Cubs

Dylan Cease

Dylan Cease – RHP (BA’s Rank: #5)

Cease is a 2014 graduate from Milton High School in Milton, GA and was a 2013 Under Armour All-American.

Bouncing back from injury after undergoing elbow surgery after being selected in the sixth round by the Chicago Cubs in 2014, Cease saw action in 11 games (eight starts) playing for the AZL Cubs in 2015, going 1-2 with a 3.63 ERA and 25 strikeouts in 24.0 innings.

He showed an electric fastball at the All-America Game, touching 97 with his fastball, a piece of the puzzle that the Cubs are excited to see Cease unleash now that he is healthy. Arguably the organization’s best arm, Cease is looking to emerge as a prospect to watch heading into 2016.

Billy McKinney

Billy McKinney – OF (BA’s Rank: #7)

Part of the deal that brought McKinney to Chicago after being drafted by the Oakland Athletics, McKinney has situated himself as a top prospect with tons of potential in an organization loaded with talent, top to bottom.

McKinney was an Under Armour Pre-Season All-America Tournament selection in 2011 and a 2012 Under Armour All-America Game Participant where he showed as a versatile defender, playing all three outfield positions.

After a 2014 season where he hit a combined .264 between Oakland’s and Chicago’s organizations, McKinney hit for a better average in ’15 (.300) at High-A Myrtle Beach, hitting .340 in 29 games there before making the jump to Double-A Tennessee where McKinney hit .285 with power (26 doubles) in 77 games. Combined, Billy hit seven homers, drove in 64 runs, scored 48 runs, walked 44 times with an on-base percentage of .371.

Defensively, McKinney has the arm to play the corner outfield positions and could find himself locking down left field in the future if he can continue hitting which he’s had no problem doing at virtually every level he’s gone to. The Cubs could likely try him at Triple-A this year to test his bat further.

Cincinnati Reds

Jesse Winker – OF (BA’s Rank: #6)

Winker was the Reds 49th overall selection in the 2012 Draft out of Olympia High School in Orlando, FL and lands sixth on Baseball America’s list after putting together a solid 2015 season.

The former Team One Futures East participant in 2010 is the highest rated outfield prospect for Cincinnati after a season in ’15 where he continued to show a penchant for power and a keen eye at the plate. Winker spent the entire season at Double-A Pensacola and hit .282 with 24 doubles, 13 homers, 55 RBI and 74 walks in 526 plate appearances. The Reds love his ability to get on base, posting a .390 clip last season after a combined .399 on-base percentage in 2014 between High-A Bakersfield and Pensacola.

Winker has age on his side; he won’t turn 23 until this August, giving Cincinnati time to give Winker more at-bats against better-caliber pitching. A non-roster invitee this spring, Winker has five hits in 15 at-bats with a double and two RBI. Defensively he gets it done as well and can be a future corner outfielder for the Reds.

Nick Travieso

Nick Travieso – RHP (BA’s Rank: #8)

Travieso was drafted by Cincinnati in the same Draft and round as Winker (14th overall) out of Archbishop McCarthy High School in Southwest Ranches, FL and is also a Non-Roster Invitee this spring for the Reds.

After an impressive 2014 at Low-A Dayton that saw him go 14-5 with a 3.04 ERA in 26 starts with 114 strikeouts in 142 1/3 innings, the Reds moved Travieso to High-A Daytona where the right hander made 19 starts and finished with an ERA of 2.70. The strikeout rate continued high at the next level of hitting, 76 strikeouts in 93 1/3 innings and followed that up with an impressive stint this past Fall in the Arizona Fall League with Peoria, making five appearances (four starts), pitching to a 2.05 ERA and 20 strikeouts to just three walks in 22.0 innings.

He’s improved upon his numbers, command and stuff at each level he’s been at, and could start 2016 in Double-A. Travieso was a 2011 Under Armour All-American and attended an Under Armour Baseball Factory National Tryout in Miami Gardens, FL in 2010.

Rookie Davis – RHP (BA’s Rank: #9)

Drafted by the New York Yankees in the 14th round in 2011 out of Dixon High School in Holly Ridge, NC, Davis was traded to Cincinnati this past off-season in a deal that sent closer Aroldis Chapman to the Bronx.

The hard-throwing righty is the jewel of the deal, of course for his ability to throw the fastball and doing it with control, striking out a high rate of batters. At High-A Tampa (Yankees org.) he struck out 105 batters, walking 18 in 97 1/3 innings last season.

Rookie was a 2010 Team One South participant and two months later was an Under Armour All-American, playing Wrigley Field. He threw low-90’s that day and now can get his fastball up to 96 MPH with useable secondary pitches that he continues to work on.

His secondary stuff is still a work in progress as he continues to develop a third pitch to compliment his fastball and curve/slider that he uses from time to time. While he’ll likely begin in Double-A, Rookie (William Theron Davis) could see time in Triple-A this season.

Milwaukee Brewers

Trent Clark

Trent Clark – OF (BA’s Rank: #3)

The Brewers are loaded with outfield talent in the minor leagues, beginning with Clark, the Fort Worth, TX native and 15th overall selection last season by Milwaukee out of Richland High School in North Richland Hills, TX.

Clark is a developed talent with a developed physique that showed well in his first season in pro ball hitting a combined .309 with an on-base percentage of .424 doing most of his damage in the Arizona League, hitting seven doubles, six triples and stealing 20 bases. Clark’s tools across the board are above average, utilizing excellent bat speed and natural power that will continue maturing with age and more experience in the minors.

Trent was a 2013 Under Armour All-America Pre-Season Tournament selection and participated in an Under Armour Baseball Factory National Tryout in Cedar Hill, TX in December, 2012.

Brett Phillips

Brett Phillips – OF (BA’s Rank: #4)

Phillips was a sixth round selection by the Houston Astros in the 2012 Draft from Seminole High School in Seminole, FL and was later traded to Milwaukee in the deal that sent outfielder Carlos Gomez to the ‘Stros.

Phillips put together a quality 2015 between the Astros ranks (Single and Double-A), rounding out the season in Milwaukee’s Double-A Biloxi with seven doubles and three triples, hitting a combined .309 with 34 doubles, 14 triples, 16 homers, 77 RBI and 17 stolen bases with an on-base percentage of .374 through all levels.

Attending a 2009 College PREP event in Sanford, FL, Phillips also attended the 2009 Arizona Freshman/Sophomore Fall Classic and looks to be a big piece of the Brewers future with a nice blend of speed, solid range and arm defensively and the power that seems to be close to developing fully, evidenced by his 15 homers at High-A Lancaster in Houston’s organization.

Clint Coulter

Clint Coulter – OF (BA’s Rank: #8)

The third piece in the trio of talented outfielders, Coulter was a Team One Futures Game West participant in 2010 and a 2011 Under Armour All-America Game Participant where he featured raw strength and plus raw power at the plate that earned him a spot at that year’s Home Run Derby.

Drafted 27th overall by Milwaukee in 2012 out of Union High School in Camas, WA, Coulter followed up a 2014 season where he hit 22 homers and drove in 89 in a full season at Single-A Wisconsin, he was advanced to High-A Brevard County where he hit just 13 homers (good for second in the Florida State League), but added 30 doubles showing that power potential is still there as he adjusts to a new league. He made contact an incredible 82% of the time and showed good patience at the plate for a slugger with 46 walks last season.

Defensively he’s always had a plus arm, going back to the time when he showed as a catcher with the Factory. Now an outfielder, Coulter plays well to a corner position with his bat, arm and overall ability to play defense.

Pittsburgh Pirates

Austin Meadows

Austin Meadows – OF (BA’s Rank: #2)

The Pirates took Austin ninth overall in 2013 out of Grayson High School in Loganville, GA and was a 2012 Under Armour All-America Game Participant where his left-handed stroke showed fluid during the event with the projection for power as he matured physically. The power is a bit slow to come so far, but Meadows continues to hit the baseball, hitting .307 at High-A Bradenton (also hitting seven homers) in 121 games and collecting nine hits in 25 AB’s upon his promotion to Double-A Altoona.

For a player who stands 6’3″ and roughly 200 pounds, Meadows is surprisingly spry for his body size, stealing 20 bases in Bradenton. He’s a complete player with a nice bat, speed and above-average strengths in the outfield that will certainly play well at the major league level.

Showing well in Altoona and his overall talent in general, he’ll likely begin 2016 with the Curve to see how he fares in a full season against Double-A pitching, usually the determining factor of how a player will hit. The question becomes when he’ll receive a chance at the bigs with the Pirates locked up at all three outfield positions with young All-Star and MVP talent.

Josh Bell

Josh Bell – OF/1B (BA’s Rank: #3)

Bell attended an Under Armour Baseball Factory National Tryout in Carrollton (Dallas), TX in July of 2009 and was a Team One Futures Game participant in September of 2009.

The Pirates took Bell in the second round of the 2011 Draft from Dallas Jesuit Prep and is finally healthy to show the Pirates why they selected him so high in the Draft. Power-wise, it wasn’t there for Bell in 2015 (like it was in 2013 when he hit 13 homers in 113 games with Low-A West Virginia), however, he did hit .307 with 17 doubles in Altoona and continued his approach with a .347 average at Triple-A Indianapolis with seven doubles, three triples and two homers with 18 RBI.

Bell has always shown the raw power that teams love, perhaps with injuries that hampered him most of 2012 into 2013, he’ll be able to settle in and get back to hitting the long ball. He did play 131 games last season, so he seems healthy and ready to contribute at Triple-A to start 2016 with the possibility he’ll see time with the Pirates later this season. So far this spring, Bell has three hits in 19 at-bats with a double and three RBI.

Jameson Taillon

Jameson Taillon – RHP (BA’s Rank: #4)

Taillon looks to bounce back from injuries that robbed him of the 2015 and ’14 seasons after Tommy John surgery in ’14. It’s been a long road for the second overall pick in 2010 from The Woodlands High School in Woodlands, TX, but with his health troubles seemingly behind him, he’s looking to make a contribution to the Pirates pitching staff this season.

We first saw Jameson way back in 2007 at a National Tryout in Irving, TX and just two years later, was a 2009 Under Armour All-American, throwing mid-90s and named the MVP of the game.

Seeing action this spring, reports have been favorable so far as they ease Taillon back into action. Already on the 40-man roster for Pittsburgh, Taillon could make his debut this season with Pittsburgh. So far this spring, he’s pitched four innings, allowing two earned runs, walking two and striking out three.

Ke’Bryan Hayes

Ke’Bryan Hayes – 3B (BA’s Rank: #9)

Coming in at the nine spot is the son of former major leaguer, Charlie Hayes who played 14 major league seasons, hit 144 careers homers and won a World Series championship with the New York Yankees in 1996.

Ke’Bryan was selected 32nd overall as a supplemental pick in last year’s Draft out of Concordia Lutheran High School in Tomball, TX and quickly rose the ranks in a short period of time last year, showing an ability to hit for average and get on base with the walk. It’s clear that Ke’Bryan learned a thing or two from his Dad with his approach at the plate and ability to not only look for his pitch and drive it, but also with his ability to draw a walk. Hayes hit .333 at Rookie-level Pirates in the Gulf Coast League drawing 22 walks, striking out just 24 times. At the 2014 Under Armour All-America Game, Hayes’ right-handed stroke was advanced and he was not phased whatsoever with off-speed stuff.

Much like Charlie, Ke’Bryan also gets it done with the glove as a plus defender, something he showed at All-America as a third baseman and now in the minors with smooth actions, soft hands and a strong, accurate arm.

St. Louis Cardinals

Nick Plummer

Nick Plummer – OF (BA’s Rank: #8)

Plummer has quickly climbed the ranks of the St. Louis Cardinals organization, selected 23rd overall last year from Brother Rice High School in Bloomfield Hills, MI.

In 2015, Plummer hit just .228, but walked 39 times in 51 games down in the Gulf Coast League as a 19-year old and played defensively well with speed and athleticism in centerfield. Combine all of that with above-average speed and a well-built body at 5’10” and 200 pounds, there’s a lot to be excited about from the 2014 Under Armour All-American.

Scouts at the All-America Game noted his mature approach at the plate and his well-coordinated swing led to hard and consistent contact with balls being driven all over the field. He’s a complete hitter with a quick bat, even at 19, and will only get better as a guy that can get on base and hit the long ball with more minor league at-bats.
