Brett Owen Sprints Into 2017 Top 10 With 6.51

In March 2015 at the Under Armour Baseball Factory National Tryout & College PREP in Oklahoma City, 2017 2B Brett Owen (Blanchard, OK) ran 7.13 in the 60 yard dash. We saw him again about seven months later at a UA tryout in Abliene, TX, where he ran 6.75 to trim nearly four tenths off his previous time. A few months after that, at the 2016 Under Armour All-America Pre-Season Tournament in Arizona, he got down a little farther to 6.71 and ranked among the top 2017 runners at the event.

2017 2B Brett Owen

Most recently, at the March 20 Under Armour Baseball Factory National Tryout in Oklahoma City, Owen slashed two tenths from his Pre-Season time and moved inside the 2017 top ten at 6.51. In one year, he moved down the stopwatch by more than six tenths of a second, all the way from 7.13 to 6.51.

The bulk of the qualifying runners from March 20 came from the Oklahoma City event. That event produced seven, followed by Goshen, KY (Louisville area) with two, and one each from Greenville, SC and Redwood City, CA (San Fransisco area).

Right behind Owen in Oklahoma City was 2016 OF Scootie Breshers (Oklahoma City, OK) at 6.57. A quick-twitch right-handed hitter with a 5-foot-9, 142 pound frame, Breshers ranks just outside the 2016 top 10, three tenths back of SS Patrick Cannon’s (Zachary, LA) lead at 6.27.

Among 2018 graduates, OF Declaudio Irvin (Midwest City, OK) and SS Benjamin MacNaughton (Edmond, OK) posted 6.81 and 6.87 respectively in Oklahoma City, while 2B Larry Washington (Richmond, CA) ran 6.94 in Redwood City. Irvin added 85 mph exit velocity to qualify among class leaders in multiple categories, while MacNaughton recorded a 9-foot broad jump that will likely be among 2018 leaders when we compile that data. Washington stands just 5-foot-4, but was only two inches back of 5-foot-10 McNaughton with a broad jump of 8-foot-10 inches.

Once again this weekend, we saw at least one 2019 graduate qualify among class leaders in four categories. It happened first this year on February 28 in Waco, Texas  with RHP/SS Hayden Keidl and C/OF Caleb Munton, again on March 13 in Plainview, Texas with 2B/RHP Jeb Jenkins, and most recently on March 20 in both Oklahoma City with 3B/C Wade Elliott and Goshen, KY with C/3B Kyle Harbison.

2019 3B/C Wade Elliott (Edmond, OK) stands 6-foot, 195 pounds and ran 7.04 in the 60 yard dash. He recorded 84 mph raw velocity to enter a tie for fourth in the 2019 class, posted a low pop time of 2.18, and reached 79 mph exit velocity to qualify for his fourth 2019 leaderboard.

Listed at 5-foot-11, 162 pounds, 2019 C/3B Kyle Harbison (Georgetown, KY) ran 7.18 in the 60 yard dash. His low pop time of 1.97 earned solo second place among 2019 graduates, just one hundredth of a second back of the class leader at 1.96. Harbison qualified on the number with 79 exit velocity, and came in one tick above the raw velocity cut line at 78 mph.

SS Julius Wynn, Jr. (Morrow, GA) turned in the fastest 2019 60 yard dash of the weekend with a 6.88 in Greenville, SC.

Entering this weekend, exactly thirty players in the class of 2019 owned sub-seven second times in the 60 yard dash. Along with Julius Wynn, Jr. at 6.88, SS Logan Castleman (Hebron, KY) joined that group with a 6.99, and added 83 mph exit velocity to join his second leaderboard.

2019 SS Rylee Holmes (Tishomingo, OK) qualified among class leaders in 60 yard dash (7.08) and raw velocity (78 mph), while 2B Brandon Reese (Washington, OK) rounded out 2019 qualifiers from the weekend with a 7.22 60 yard dash in Oklahoma City.
