6-foot-9 LHP Mitchell Stone Up To 90 mph in OKC

On Sunday, March 20 in Oklahoma City, 6-foot-9, 250 pound LHP Mitchell Stone (Edmond, OK) became the third left-hander to reach 90 mph for us over the last two weeks. On March 13 in Indianapolis, we saw USC commit Brian Gursky (Granger, IN) touch 91 and TCU commit Ryan Eiermann (Naperville, IL) up to 90 mph.

tryout-logo-2016_UpdatedOf the 24 pitches Stone — an Oklahoma State commit — threw in his bullpen session, 20 were strikes in the eyes of our scouts. His fastball was thrown to both sides of the plate seemingly at will, with arm side run between 87 and 90. Like we saw Eiermann do last weekend, Stone increased his velocity as his bullpen session progressed, with his last fastball registering 90 mph on the radar gun. Similar to what we saw from Gursky last weekend, Stone added a sharp breaking ball with 1-to-7 break at 71-74 mph, and backed off nicely on a 76-78 mph changeup with late arm side life.

Also in Oklahoma City, 2017 LHP Eli Davis (Shawnee, KS) — a Kansas University commit — ran his fastball up to 86 mph. He offered evidence of ability to command his three-pitch mix, which includes a sharp downer breaking ball and a changeup he can turn over for tailing arm side life. We saw him dominate with that same three-pitch mix at the 2015 Under Armour Futures Texas, where he showed among the best feel for pitching in the 2017 class. He is a bulldog type competitor on the mound, the type you must see work live in a game outing to fully appreciate.

6-foot-3, 178 pound SS/RHP Tristen Hudson (Salem, SC) rounded out 2017 qualifiers with an 85-87 mph fastball. The pitch had late arm side run from his loose, quick arm stroke, while his breaking ball had tight spin at 71-73 mph with action across the zone from his low three-quarters arm angle. A switch-hitter with good overall athleticism, Hudson is a talented all-around player with two-way potential.

Among 2018 graduates, Alex “AJ” Moore (Moore, OK) ran his fastball up to 83 mph while RHP/SS Samuel Liang (Moraga, CA) touched 82 mph. Moore pounded the zone with all three of his pitches, tallying 20 strikes out of 24 pitches. His fastball was likely his third best pitch, behind a 68-70 mph breaking ball with sharp 11-5 break and a low 70s changeup that left his hand naturally from a fastball arm stroke. Also a talented hitter and a solid infield defender, Moore has legitimate two-way potential. Liang turned in what was arguably among the best breaking balls of the weekend — a near 12-6 downer with sharp break around 70 mph. He’s also a talented infield defender with some two-way potential.

2019 SS/RHP Dalton Bowling (Fremont, CA) stands a large-framed 6-foot-3 and 200 pounds with a strong lower half and room to fill out. He too has two-way potential, though more likely as a corner player than a shortstop in the future. His fastball reached 81 mph and went with a curveball and changeup in the upper 60s.

2019 RHP/3B Justin Doyle

2019 RHP/3B Justin Doyle (Prospect, KY) also touched 81 mph with his fastball, and added a smooth left-handed stroke with good rhythm as evidence of his own two-way potential.

RHP Austin Windham (Lynchburg, SC) rounded out 2019 qualifers with a 79 mph fastball. His arm worked loose and easy, and he spun a quality low 60s breaking ball along with a legitimately high-quality knuckle ball in the 61-64 mph range.
