2017 LHP Brian Gursky, Ryan Eiermann Reach 90 mph in Indy

Though he attends high school in Indiana, 2017 LHP Brian Gursky (Granger, IN) — a University of Southern California commit — plays summer baseball in So Cal, where we saw him pitch twice prior to his outing this past Sunday at the Indianapolis Under Armour Baseball Factory National Tryout.

At the 2014 Under Armour Southwest 16u Championships, as a member of the BPA Black, he pounded the zone with an 84-87 mph fastball and spun a mid 60s breaking ball. The next summer, at the same event but this time with the So Cal Birds Black 2017, he was up to 89 mph and was beginning to overpower hitters with velocity.

Most recently, at the March 13 Under Armour Baseball Factory National Tryout in Indianapolis, he was up to 190 pounds at 6-foot-1, ran 6.99 in the 60 yard dash, and reached 91 mph from both the windup and the stretch. In addition to an improved fastball, he showed significantly improved secondary pitches. Though his breaking ball had 1-to-7 shape at 74-78 mph, it was outclassed (at least in this bullpen outing) by a 76-80 mph changeup that left his hand naturally and had fading sink in the zone.

We’d seen evidence of a breaking ball previously, but the addition of a seemingly advanced changeup is a potentially lethal weapon in the hands of a pitcher with fastball command — which we’ve seen from Gursky multiple times in live game action. Now in possession of a quality three-pitch mix, Gursky is among the more complete left-handers in the class of 2017.

2017 LHP Ryan Eiermann (Naperville, IL) — a TCU commit — fits a similar profile to Gursky. A fellow cold-weather left-hander, he also ran 6.99 and showed the makings of a quality three-pitch mix.

He is listed slightly smaller on the roster at 6-foot, 185 pounds, and reached 90 mph from the windup at the March 13 Indianapolis UA tryout. He threw his fastball to both sides of the plate, and climbed his velocity up from 84 to 90 as he progressed through his bullpen session. His breaking ball had sharp 2-to-8 action in the 73-75 mph range from his three-quarters arm angle, and he backed off on a change in the same velocity range.

The leaders in the class of 2017 sit at 92 mph as of the writing of this post, with eight tied on that number and six just one tick back at 91, including Brian Gursky. Ryan Eiermann and three others at 90 mph round out the group of 18 total 2017 arms to reach the magic number. Of that group, 14 are Division I commits.

2018 SS/RHP Damon Keith

Among 2018 graduates, 6-foot-2 RHP Garrett Burhenn (Indianapolis, IN) joined the leaders at 83 mph, followed by 6-foot-3 RHP Nathan Toone (Evansville, IN) and 6-foot-1 SS/RHP Damon Keith (Redlands, CA) at 82 mph.

Burhenn ran 7.00 in the 60 yard dash and added a low 70s curveball along with a solid changeup to complete an interesting package. Though we didn’t see him workout defensively, Toone offered a 7.01 60 yard dash and 84 mph exit velocity as evidence of two-way ability. A primary shortstop, Keith ran 6.99 to qualify among 2018 leaders, and missed qualifying among raw velocity leaders by just one mph at 83.

2B/RHP Jeb Jenkins (Amarillo, TX) and 6-foot-1 SS/RHP Michael Doolin (Schererville, IN) joined 2019 leaders at 81 mph, with 6-foot-3 RHP Zane Sparks (Canyon, TX) three ticks back at 78 mph.

Jenkins qualified among 2019 leaders in four categories, an impressive achievement we saw from fellow 2019 Texans Hayden Keidl (RHP/SS – Abilene, TX) and Caleb Munton (C – Abilene, TX) two weeks ago at the Waco, TX Under Armour Baseball Factory National Tryout. In addition to his 81 mph fastball, Jenkins ranked among 2019 leaders in the 60 yard dash (7.19), raw velocity (82 mph) and exit velocity (80 mph).
