SS Rhett Maynard Enters 2019 Top Five with 88 mph Exit Velo

At the Plainview, TX Under Armour Baseball Factory National Tryout on March 13, SS Rhett Maynard (Amarillo, TX) reached 88 mph to enter a tie for the fifth best exit velocity among the class of 2019. Only 10 players stand between Maynard and the class leader at 92 mph, including four total at 90 mph or better.

Maynard also qualified among 2019 leaders with a 6.97 60 yard dash, and with 82 mph raw velocity. He stands at 6-foot, 165 pounds and recorded an impressive 9-foot-5 broad jump, that will almost certainly rank near the top of the class when we compile that data.

BF-PocketRadar_3.13With a mark of 94 mph at the Plainview tryout, 2017 C/3B Stetson Rios (Dumas, TX) claimed the top spot for the weekend. A well-rounded player with a strong 5-foot-6, 193 pound frame, Rios also ranked among 2017 leaders with a low pop time of 1.91.

The ball left the bat of 2018 OF Steven Bermudez (Temple City, CA) at 85 mph from the left side of the plate — good enough to make the leaderboard cut on the number. However, he recorded 93 mph right-handed to tie for sixth, and reached 92 mph raw velocity for second place alone in that category. Listed at 5-foot-11, 185 pounds on the roster, a 7.25 60 yard dash stands as only a slight blemish on an otherwise clean card replete with high marks on the Baseball Factory 10-70 Scouting Scale.

At 91 mph, inside the top ten and just two ticks back of Bermudez, was fellow 5-foot-11, 185 pound 2018 Jared Poland, a 2B from Indianapolis, IN. A right-handed hitter with a similar combination of bat-to-ball skill and bat speed, Poland ran slightly better than Bermudez at 7.15.

Four other 2018 graduates qualified among class leaders, including one each at 87 and 85 with two in between at 86 mph.

6-foot-4, 210 pound RHP/1B Jared Shelton (McCordsville, IN) reached 87 mph off the bat and added a fastball up to 80 mph with big arm side run as evidence of two-way ability. The ball left the bat of switch-hitting SS Nick Rusche (Greenfield, IN) at 86 mph left-handed, and at 82 mph from the right side of the plate. Like Rusche, RHP/C Lucas McNew (Floyds Knobs, IN) recorded 86 mph exit velocity. He added a low pop time of 2.1 to bolster his position player credentials, and offered an 81 mph fastball as evidence of his own two-way potential. Left-handed hitting SS Langston Ginder (Huntertown, IN) rounded out 2018 exit velocity qualifiers at 85 mph, and grabbed one more mph with his arm to rank among class leaders in raw velocity at 86 mph.

After Rhett Maynard at 88 mph, the next highest 2019 qualifier from the weekend of March 13 was left-handed hitting OF Cade Olsen (Amarillo, TX) at 81 mph. Olsen also posted 6.95 in the 60 yard dash and 78 mph raw velocity to rank among class leaders in three total categories.

2019 RHP/OF Austin Phillips

Like Olsen, 6-foot-2, 185 pound RHP/OF Austin Phillips (Lubbock, TX) appears on three different 2019 leaderboards. In addition to 80 mph exit velocity, he recorded 80 mph raw velocity and touched 78 mph with his fastball.

80 mph exit velocity was one of four measures from 2B/RHP Jeb Jenkins (Amarillo, TX) to rank among the best in the 2019 class. You’ll also see him among the leaders in raw velocity (82 mp), fastball velocity (81 mph), and 60 yard dash (7.19).

In at 80 mph exit velocity to round out 2019 qualifiers were SS Jacob Bartlett (Amarillo, TX), C/1B Saywer Kliesen (Amarillo, TX), 1B Grant Maas (Evansville, IN), and RHP Zane Sparks (Canyon, TX). Maas added a 6.87 60 yard dash as further evidence to create speed, while Sparks offered a 78 mph fastball as evidence of two-way ability.
