Seth Agwunobi Joins Group of Seventeen 2018 C To Post Sub-2.0 Pop Time
As of Baseball Factory and Team One events through March 6, only sixteen catchers in the class of 2018 had posted a pop time of less than 2.00 seconds. On March 13 at the Ashburn, VA Under Armour Baseball Factory National Tryout, C Seth Agwunobi (Alexandria, VA) recorded a low pop time of 1.99 to join that group. In doing so, he moved the total up to seventeen, and entered a tie for the ninth best pop time in the class of 2018.
Much more than just a catch-and-throw guy, Agwunobi stands a solid 6-foot-2, 195 pounds with athletic cuts and featured a well-rounded set of tools with no glaring weakness. We didn’t likely see his best round of batting practice, but the speed and looseness in his right-handed stroke were apparent nonetheless.
Nipping on his heels, just one hundredth away and tied for tenth at 2.00, were fellow 2018 catchers Colton Moore (Bushland, TX) and Braxton Turner (Greenfield, IN).
Rounding out 2018 qualifiers were C Hunter Antillon (Rancho Cucamonga, CA) at 2.06, and RHP/C Lucas McNew (Floyds Knobs, IN) at 2.10. Antillon proved to be a talented all-around defender with excellent blocking skills to go with good hands to receive and the previously noted catch-and-throw ability. McNew added 86 mph exit velocity, but may have a brighter future on the mound where he featured a fastball up to 81 as part of a solid three-pitch mix.
The lowest time of the weekend was 1.90, turned in by 2016 C Noah Coronado (Lubbock, TX). He added 88 mph raw velocity, which was the second highest of the weekend.
A year younger but only one hundredth off the pop time pace was 2017 C/3B Stetson Rios (Dumas, TX). He joined 2017 class leaders at 1.91, and turned in the highest exit velocity of the weekend at 94 mph to qualify for his second leaderboard.
2019 qualifiers included C Jake Sonandres (Torrance, CA) at 2.15, C Brett Cobb (Canyon, TX) at 2.18, and C Adam Uhl (Salem, IN) at 2.22.
2019 SS/C Matt Lelito (St. John, IN) was listed as a secondary catcher on the roster, but appeared much more natural behind the plate than he did in the infield. He stands at 6-foot-3, 190 pounds and is a good overall athlete with 7.09 speed in the 60 yard dash. He posted a low pop time of 2.20 along with 81 mph raw velocity to qualify among 2019 leaders in three categories.
