FACTORY SCOUTING REPORT Austin, TX B.A.T.S. Video Scouting Session & PUMA National Tournament Team Tryout

EVENT DATE: 10/30/05

LOCATION: St. Edwards University, Lucien-Hamilton Field

The below list of prospects is as good or better than any we have put on this website in 2005. The top two are among the top RHP we have seen all year, and they are followed by some of the best two way prospects we have seen all year. Therefore, this was one of the toughest groups to rank – these players are very tightly bunched.

Top Prospects

The Top Prospects were selected by Andy Ferguson (Director of Scouting) and Jim Gemler (Director of On Field Sessions) based on their performance at the event. The ranking is based on their status as college prospects, and is relative to the entire group of players we saw on the day.

IMPORTANT – We list players at the position(s) where we feel they are prospects. This may result in a player being listed at a position they did not play for us, or having a position they did play for us go unlisted. As usual, all references to “average” are based on high school standards.

1. Blake Beavan, RHP, 2007 – Irving, TX (Irving HS), 6-7, 205, R/R. A big bodied right handed with a fastball that reached 93 mph from a three quarters slot. At the Team One National Showcase in late September he was 87-90 mph on a Stalker, today he was 90-93 mph from the windup and 87-89 mph from the stretch. Along with his FB he threw a 76-78 mph Slider with flat, sweepy action. His CB had tight spin like his SL, with 10 to 4 shape – both are near well above average pitches. Also showed an 81 mph CH, that had the looks of a usable pitch. His balance and tempo were good, delivery was sound and repeatable. His arm worked well out front with excellent quickness after a shortish move out of the glove. Pitched for USA Youth National Team during the summer of 2005.

2. Taylor Jungmann, RHP, 2008 – Temple, TX (Rogers HS), 6-5, 170, R/R. With his tall, lean and lanky body it is no surprise that Jungmann is also a successful basketball player. He showed a fastball between 89 and 94 mph with good downhill plane and late arm side life. Pitching from a three quarters slot, he spun a tight 10 to 4 shaped breaking ball with good depth and near well above average action. His CH was not thrown with FB arm speed, but it was thrown with good feel for the ball and had good fade action – a developmental pitch with good promise. Delivery was slow tempo with good balance and body control throughout. His arm worked loose and with whip out front. Did a lot of things well, which is rare for a young pitcher with his type of body.

3. Elroy Urbina, LHP/1B, 2007 – Hutto, TX (Hutto HS), 6-0, 165, L/L. Urbina pitched from a high three quarters slot and showed three near well above average pitches. His FB was 84-88 mph with late arm side life. His breaking ball was a downer with sharp action, 1 to 7 shape. CH showed sink action along with some cutting action, was thrown with good arm speed and feel. Hips drifted early in delivery, but ball still had great life from his hand. Can clean this area up to find the zone a little better along with possibly a few more mph. A fringe position player prospect, arm strength stood out as best tool. Hands were quick at the plate. Approach was to pull and lift, was aggressive and flashed some power. A strong average defender at 1B.

4. Sean Hoelscher, 3B/RHP, 2007 – Robstown, TX (Calallen HS), 6-3, 195, R/R. It is hard to say which way he would more value, it is easy to say that he is a very talented player both ways. A 7.03 runner with potential well above average offensive ability and a solid glove at 3B makes him an interesting position player. However, an 84-91 mph FB along with the makings of an out pitch type downer breaking ball makes him interesting as a pitcher. Seems to fit best as an everyday player and late inning bullpen guy at the college level. Present tools grade out better as a position player, especially hitting and power. Showed good rhythm to hit, along with a wristy and lively stroke. Big stride hurt him a little, caused some length and inconsistent barrel accuracy – but potential stood out more than anything.

5. Ryan Duke, RHP/SS, 2007 – Corpus Christi, TX (Calallen HS), 6-0, 165, R/R. Duke is another guy with two way potential, very similar to his HS teammate Sean Hoelscher (above). Duke has a better set of pitches right now along with a more polished delivery. His fastball was 84-90 mph with downhill, straight action. He threw an 11 to 5 curveball that lacked depth, along with short and tight SL (76-79 mph) with good depth. His CH had very good sink action and was thrown with good feel. Also an above average defensive SS, showed smooth actions with good feet and hands and a strong arm. Stroke was level and with good bat speed, prep action was solid and he got good extension through contact. Line drive hitter with gap power. 7.05 runner and above average overall athlete.

6. Joaquin Hinojosa, SS/3B/RHP, 2007 – McAllen, TX (McAllen HS), 5-10, 173, R/R. Hinojosa profiles very well as a 3B everyday player, with the ability to come out the bullpen with two quality pitches. Is a tick below the runner you may want, but has potential to hit in the middle of the order – and is capable of doing so as a SS. The ball jumped off his bat to all fields – from a combination of a good stroke and a lot of life in his hands and wrists. Maintained good balance and a solid lower half approach. Both hitting and power projects to be near well above average. Worked around and through balls well in the infield, and showed very good ability to catch and throw. Fastball was 83-89 mph with excellent down plane and arm side life. Breaking ball was 11 to 5 shape with good spin and depth, an above average pitch that he had good feel for.

7. Guillermo Cienfuegas, RHP/3B, 2006 – Hidalgo, TX (Valley View HS), 6-2, 220, R/R. Has a sturdy, solid buid and a quality mix of pitches. Fastball was 86-88 mph with late arm side life, also showed some occasional cut action from his three quarters slot. His arm worked easily out front, and his balance and tempo were good. Threw a CB with 10 to 4 shape and tight, occasionally hard action. Also showed a Cutter with near above average action and a Splitter that better resembled a CH. Showed some pop in his bat, hands worked well through the zone and his stroke was level through contact. A strong average 3B in terms of ability to catch and throw, feet and footwork would fit better at 1B. Main value is on the mound, where he has the look of a durable right hander with a potential power FB.

8. Cody Covington, OF/RHP, 2006 – Garden Ridge, TX (Canyon HS), 6-4, 190, R/R. Athletic body with length stood out, can project on him physically. Plays basketball in addition to baseball, showed speed in nearly all parts of his game – ran well (6.93 60yds), showed above average bat speed, showed some arm speed and ability to spin a tight breaking ball. Has more value as a position player now – combination of body, running and hitting ability are exciting. Showed good barrel accuracy along with the ability to hit the ball hard the other way, gap power is present now and more should develop in the future. A strong average OF with good feet and footwork. Fastball was 82-83 mph with good downhill plane. Breaking ball was tight 12 to 6 from his over top slot, potential out pitch type. Showed the makings of a solid Splitter as well. Also an excellent student – 4.0 GPA, 1840 SAT.
