Top Prospects
The Top Prospects were selected by Dan Mooney (Assistant Director of Scouting) and Mark Daniels (Scout) based on their performance at the event. The ranking is based on their status as college prospects, and is relative to the entire group of players we saw on the day.
IMPORTANT – We list players at the position(s) where we feel they are prospects. This may result in a player being listed at a position they did not play for us, or having a position they did play for us go unlisted. As usual, all references to “average” are based on high school standards.
1. Brian Dice, C, 2006 – Hickory, NC (Fred T. Foard HS), 6-1, 188, R/R. Since we last saw him at the 2005 PUMA Pre-Season All American Tournament, Dice has made significant progress. Quickness and life in his body have been present all along, and now that his body and physical maturity have caught up his overall athleticism really stood out. His best release time improved from 2.10 to 1.94, and his overall actions behind the plate are more precise and smooth. Kept hands and barrel inside the ball well, resulting in good contact all over the field. Potential doubles power to pull side. Stroke is still a little wristy, but has gotten more lively. Still has potential for another jump, this time with the bat – defensive ability is now near well above average, as is his arm strength.
2. Keith Whitman, 1B/OF, 2007 – Elkin, NC (Elkin HS), 6-0, 225, R/R. Has a strong and sturdy body, and is also a linebacker / tight end in football. He is built like a corner player, and hits like a corner player – power was his best tool. His bat was quick to the zone and he maintained above average bat speed through the hitting zone, showed above average barrel accuracy. Best contact was to the pull side, where the ball got off the barrel especially well. Has some room to shorten up, if so has enough strength to drive the ball to more parts of the ballpark. An adequate outfielder with a potentially above average arm – hit 83 mph but arm graded closer to average at present. An above average runner down the line (4.48), an average runner in the 60 (7.42). Athletic ability is there, potential to play either OF or 1B.
